Qwerty KeyboardYour phone features a QWERTY keyboard specifically designed foreasy and comfortable text entry. The QWERTY keyboard uses astandard layout.

1. Function Key Allows you enter the alternatecharacter (such as ~ for the W key) on theQWERTY keyboard. To lock the function key(as when entering a series of numbers oralternate characters), press it twice.

2. Shift Key Lets you change letter capitalizationwhen entering text using the QWERTYkeyboard.

3. Clear Key Use to delete a letter, words orsentences. Also use it to exit the menu and goback to standby mode.

The BatteryThe phone comes with arechargeable battery. The batterycharge level is shown at the topright corner of the screen.

Installing the Battery

1. Hold the phonesecurely withboth hands (asdemonstrated)and slide theback coverdownwards to remove it.

2. Align the battery contactswith the phone terminals atthe top of the batterycompartment and gently pushdown on the battery until itclicks into place.

3. Align the back cover so that the hooks on the batterycover areplaced in thephone's slot.

4. Slide the backcover upwardsuntil it clicks intoplace.

Removing the Battery

1. Turn the phone off andremove the back cover.

2. Use the fingertip cutout atthe bottom of the batterycompartment to lift thebattery out.

Charging the BatteryTo use the charger provided withyour phone:

Warning! Use only the chargerprovided with the phone. Usingany charger other than the oneincluded with the LLGG550055CC maydamage your phone or battery.

1. Gently uncover the phone'sAccessory/Charger Port.

2. Plug the charger into theAccessory/Charger Port andthe other end into anelectrical outlet. The chargetime varies depending uponthe battery level.

Battery Charge LevelThe battery charge level is shownat the top right corner of thescreen. When the battery chargelevel becomes low, the lowbattery sensor alerts you in threeways: sounding an audible tone,blinking the battery icon, anddisplaying a warning message. Ifthe battery charge level becomesexceedingly low, the phoneautomatically turns off and anyfunction in progress is not saved.

Turning the Phone Off

1. Press and hold the PWR/EndKey until the screenturns off.

Signal StrengthCall quality depends on the signalstrength in your area. You can tellhow much signal strength youhave by the number of bars nextto the signal strength icon at thetop left corner of the screen; themore bars, the stronger the signal.If you’re having problems withsignal quality, move to an openarea or, when inside a building, trymoving near a window.

To see the icon glossary, go toMenu > Settings >Phone Info > Icon Glossary onyour phone. Then select the typeof icons you would like to see.

Making Calls

1. Make sure the phone is turnedon. If not, press and hold thePWR/End Key for about3 seconds to turn it on.

2. Touch the Phone Quick Keyand enter the phone

number (include the areacode if needed).

3. Press the Send Key ortouch to dial thenumber.

4. Press the PWR/End Keyor touch to end the call.

Correcting Dialing MistakesIf you make a mistake whiledialing a number, press theClear/Speaker Key once toerase the last digit entered orpress and hold theClear/Speaker Key downto delete all digits.

Redialing CallsWith the touchscreen unlocked,press the Send Key once toview a list of all of your recentcalls. The last 270 calls (90Received, 90 Missed and 90Dialed) are stored in the callhistory list. Touch the Dial Key

next to any of the entries toplace a call to that number.

You can also press the Send Keytwice to redial the last

number you dialed, received ormissed in the call history.

Receiving Calls

1. When the phone rings and/orvibrates, press the Send Key

to answer the call.

2. Press the PWR/End Keyor touch to end the call.

TipTo choose your answer options:Menu > Settings > Call Settings > Answer Options.

Choose from the following options:Any Key/Auto with Handsfree/Slide Open(Speakerphone)

Note

If you press the PWR/End Keyor the Volume Keyswhile the phone is ringing, theringing or vibration is muted forthat call.

Lock ModeSets your phone to require a 4-digit password in order to usethe phone.

To set Lock Mode on, touchMenu > Settings >Phone Settings > Security > OK> Enter the Lock Code > LockPhone. Then choose fromUnlock, Lock, or On Power Up.

Mute FunctionThe Mute function is availableduring a phone call. To quicklyactivate Mute during a call, touch

. To deactivate Mute, touch.

Quick Volume AdjustmentQuickly adjust the Master Volumeand Earpiece Volume by pressingthe upper Volume Key to increaseand lower Volume Key to decrease.

Call WaitingYour cellular service may offercall waiting. While a call is inprogress, a beep indicates anotherincoming call. When call waitingis enabled, you may put the activecall on hold while you answer theother incoming call. Check withyour cellular service provider forinformation about this function.

Note Until you change it, the defaultlock code/password is the last 4digits of your phone number.

Caller IDCaller ID displays the phonenumber or name of the incomingcall. If the caller’s identity is storedin Contacts, the name will appearalong with the phone number.Check with your service providerfor availability.

Speed DialingSpeed dialing is a convenientfeature that allows you to makephone calls quickly. A numberkey can be assigned to a specificphone number. By pressing andholding down a number key, yourphone will recall the phone

number associated from theContact List and dial that phonenumber for you. Speed DialNumber 1 is set to Voicemail bydefault and cannot be changed.

Dialing Single Digit Speed Dials(from 2 to 9)

Touch and hold the Speed Dialnumber on the Dial pad.OREnter the Speed Dial number andpress the Send Key .

Dialing Double Digit SpeedDials (from 10 to 99)

Enter the first digit and thentouch and hold the key of thesecond digit on the Dial pad.

Enter the first and second digitsand press the Send Key .

Text InputEach time you touch a text entry field, the touchscreen automaticallydisplays a keypad allowing you to enter text, numbers, and symbols. Forexample, in a text field, an alphabet keypad appears but you can alsoswitch to number mode to enter digits.

There aretwo different types of pauses youcan use when storing a number:

Theinformation stored in themessage is determined by phonemodel and service capability.Other limits such as availablecharacters per message mayexist. Please check with yourservice provider for systemfeatures and capabilities.

There isno proof, however, that wirelessphones are absolutely safe.Wireless phones emit low levels ofradiofrequency energy (RF) in themicrowave range while beingused. They also emit very lowlevels of RF when in the Homescreen. Whereas high levels of RFcan produce health effects (byheating tissue), exposure to lowlevel RF that does not produceheating effects causes no knownadverse health effects. Manystudies of low level RF exposureshave not found any biologicaleffects. Some studies havesuggested that some biologicaleffects may occur, but suchfindings have not been confirmedby additional research. In somecases, other researchers have haddifficulty in reproducing thosestudies, or in determining thereasons for inconsistent results.

2. What is the FDA’s roleconcerning the safety ofwireless phones?

Under the law, the FDA does notreview the safety ofradiationemitting consumerproducts such as wireless phonesbefore they can be sold, as it doeswith new drugs or medical devices.However, the agency has authorityto take action if wireless phonesare shown to emit radiofrequencyenergy (RF) at a level that ishazardous to the user. In such acase, the FDA could require themanufacturers of wireless phonesto notify users of the healthhazard and to repair, replace, orrecall the phones so that thehazard no longer exists. Althoughthe existing scientific data do notjustify FDA regulatory actions, theFDA has urged the wireless phoneindustry to take a number ofsteps, including the following:

While thesebase stations operate at higherpower than do the wirelessphones themselves, the RFexposures that people get fromthese base stations are typicallythousands of times lower thanthose they can get from wirelessphones. Base stations are thusnot the subject of the safetyquestions discussed in thisdocument. 3. What kinds of phones are the

subject of this update?

The term ‘wireless phone’ refershere to handheld wireless phoneswith built-in antennas, oftencalled ‘cell’, ‘mobile’, or ‘PCS’phones. These types of wirelessphones can expose the user to

measurable radiofrequencyenergy (RF) because of the shortdistance between the phone andthe user’s head. These RFexposures are limited by FCCsafety guidelines that weredeveloped with the advice of theFDA and other federal health andsafety agencies. When the phoneis located at greater distancesfrom the user, the exposure to RFis drastically lower because aperson’s RF exposure decreasesrapidly with increasing distancefrom the source. The so-called‘cordless phones,’ which have abase unit connected to thetelephone wiring in a house,typically operate at far lowerpower levels, and thus produceRF exposures far below the FCCsafety limits. 4. What are the results of the

research done already?

The research done thus far hasproduced conflicting results, and

many studies have suffered fromflaws in their research methods.Animal experiments investigatingthe effects of radiofrequencyenergy (RF) exposurescharacteristic of wireless phoneshave yielded conflicting resultsthat often cannot be repeated inother laboratories. A few animalstudies, however, have suggestedthat low levels of RF couldaccelerate the development ofcancer in laboratory animals.However, many of the studiesthat showed increased tumordevelopment used animals thathad been genetically engineeredor treated with cancer causingchemicals so as to be pre-disposed to develop cancer inthe absence of RF exposure.Other studies exposed theanimals to RF for up to 22 hoursper day. These conditions are notsimilar to the conditions underwhich people use wirelessphones, so we don’t know withcertainty what the results of such

studies mean for human health.Three large epidemiology studieshave been published sinceDecember 2000. Between them,the studies investigated anypossible association between theuse of wireless phones andprimary brain cancer, glioma,meningioma, or acousticneuroma, tumors of the brain orsalivary gland, leukemia, or othercancers. None of the studiesdemonstrated the existence ofany harmful health effects fromwireless phone RF exposures.However, none of the studies cananswer questions about long-term exposures, since the averageperiod of phone use in thesestudies was around three years. 5. What research is needed to

decide whether RF exposurefrom wireless phones poses ahealth risk?

Acombination of laboratorystudies and epidemiologicalstudies of people actually using

wireless phones would providesome of the data that areneeded. Lifetime animal exposurestudies could be completed in afew years. However, very largenumbers of animals would beneeded to provide reliable proofof a cancer promoting effect ifone exists. Epidemiologicalstudies can provide data that isdirectly applicable to humanpopulations, but 10 or moreyears follow-up may be neededto provide answers about somehealth effects, such as cancer.This is because the intervalbetween the time of exposure toa cancercausing agent and thetime tumors develop - if they do-may be many, many years. Theinterpretation of epidemiologicalstudies is hampered by difficultiesin measuring actual RF exposureduring day-to-day use of wirelessphones. Many factors affect thismeasurement, such as the angleat which the phone is held, or

which model of phone is used. 6. What is the FDA doing to

find out more about thepossible health effects ofwireless phone RF?

The FDA is working with the U.S.National Toxicology Program andwith groups of investigatorsaround the world to ensure thathigh priority animal studies areconducted to address importantquestions about the effects ofexposure to radiofrequencyenergy (RF). The FDA has been aleading participant in the WorldHealth Organization InternationalElectromagnetic Fields (EMF)Project since its inception in1996 . An influential result of thiswork has been the developmentof a detailed agenda of researchneeds that has driven theestablishment of new researchprograms around the world. Theproject has also helped develop aseries of public informationdocuments on EMF issues. TheFDA and the Cellular

Telecommunications & InternetAssociation (CTIA) have a formalCooperative Research andDevelopment Agreement(CRADA) to do research onwireless phone safety. The FDAprovides the scientific oversight,obtaining input from experts ingovernment, industry, andacademic organizations. CTIA-funded research is conductedthrough contracts withindependent investigators. Theinitial research will include bothlaboratory studies and studies ofwireless phone users. The CRADAwill also include a broadassessment of additional researchneeds in the context of the latestresearch developments aroundthe world.7. How can I find out how much

radio frequency energyexposure I can get by usingmy wireless phone?

All phones sold in the UnitedStates must comply with Federal

Communications Commission(FCC) guidelines that limit radiofrequency energy (RF) exposures.The FCC established theseguidelines in consultation with theFDA and the other federal healthand safety agencies. The FCClimit for RF exposure from wirelesstelephones is set at a SpecificAbsorption Rate (SAR) of 1.6watts per kilogram (1.6 W/kg).The FCC limit is consistent withthe safety standards developed bythe Institute of Electrical andElectronic Engineering (IEEE) andthe National Council on RadiationProtection and Measurement. Theexposure limit takes intoconsideration the body’s ability toremove heat from the tissues thatabsorb energy from the wirelessphone and is set well below levelsknown to have effects.Manufacturers of wireless phonesmust report the RF exposure levelfor each model of phone to theFCC. measure the radio frequencyenergy coming from wirelessphones?

The Institute of Electrical andElectronic Engineers (IEEE) isdeveloping a technical standardfor measuring the radio frequencyenergy (RF) exposure fromwireless phones and otherwireless handsets with theparticipation and leadership ofFDA scientists and engineers. Thestandard, ‘Recommended Practicefor Determining the Spatial- PeakSpecific Absorption Rate (SAR) inthe Human Body Due to WirelessCommunications Devices:Experimental Techniques,’ setsforth the first consistent testmethodology for measuring therate at which RF is deposited inthe heads of wireless phone

users. The test method uses atissuesimulating model of thehuman head. Standardized SARtest methodology is expected togreatly improve the consistencyof measurements made atdifferent laboratories on the samephone. SAR is the measurementof the amount of energyabsorbed in tissue, either by thewhole body or a small part of thebody. It is measured in watts/kg(or milliwatts/g) of matter. Thismeasurement is used todetermine whether a wirelessphone complies with safetyguidelines. 9. What steps can I take to

reduce my exposure toradiofrequency energy frommy wireless phone?

If there is a risk from theseproducts - and at this point wedo not know that there is - it isprobably very small. But if you areconcerned about avoiding evenpotential risks, you can take a few

simple steps to minimize yourexposure to radiofrequencyenergy (RF). Since time is a keyfactor in how much exposure aperson receives, reducing theamount of time spent using awireless phone will reduce RFexposure. If you must conductextended conversations bywireless phone every day, youcould place more distancebetween your body and thesource of the RF, since theexposure level drops offdramatically with distance. Forexample, you could use a headsetand carry the wireless phone awayfrom your body or use a wirelessphone connected to a remoteantenna. Again, the scientific datado not demonstrate that wirelessphones are harmful. But if you areconcerned about the RF exposurefrom these products, you can usemeasures like those describedabove to reduce your RF exposure

from wireless phone use. 10. What about children using

wireless phones?

The scientific evidence does notshow a danger to users ofwireless phones, includingchildren and teenagers. If youwant to take steps to lowerexposure to radiofrequencyenergy (RF), the measuresdescribed above would apply tochildren and teenagers usingwireless phones. Reducing thetime of wireless phone use andincreasing the distance betweenthe user and the RF source willreduce RF exposure. Some groupssponsored by other nationalgovernments have advised thatchildren be discouraged fromusing wireless phones at all. Forexample, the government in theUnited Kingdom distributedleaflets containing such arecommendation in December

2000. They noted that noevidence exists that using awireless phone causes braintumors or other ill effects. Theirrecommendation to limit wirelessphone use by children was strictlyprecautionary; it was not basedon scientific evidence that anyhealth hazard exists. 11. What about wireless phone

interference with medicalequipment?

Radio frequency energy (RF)from wireless phones can interactwith some electronic devices. Forthis reason, the FDA helpeddevelop a detailed test method tomeasure electromagneticinterference (EMI) of implantedcardiac pacemakers anddefibrillators from wirelesstelephones. This test method isnow part of a standardsponsored by the Association forthe Advancement of Medicalinstrumentation (AAMI). The final

draft, a joint effort by the FDA,medical device manufacturers,and many other groups, wascompleted in late 2000. Thisstandard will allow manufacturersto ensure that cardiacpacemakers and defibrillators aresafe from wireless phone EMI.The FDA has tested hearing aidsfor interference from handheldwireless phones and helpeddevelop a voluntary standardsponsored by the Institute ofElectrical and ElectronicEngineers (IEEE). This standardspecifies test methods andperformance requirements forhearing aids and wireless phonesso that no interference occurswhen a person uses a‘compatible’ phone and a‘compatible’ hearing aid at thesame time. This standard wasapproved by the IEEE in 2000.The FDA continues to monitorthe use of wireless phones forpossible interactions with other

Before a phone model is availablefor sale to the public, it must betested and certified to the FCCthat it does not exceed the limitestablished by the government-adopted requirement for safeexposure. Teclado QWERTYSu teléfono cuenta con un teclado QWERTY específicamente diseñadopara la entrada de texto fácil y comoda. El teclado QWERTY utiliza undiseño estándar.

1. Tecla Función Le permite introducir el carácter alternativo (por ejemplo, ~ para latecla W) en el teclado QWERTY. Para bloquearesta tecla (como al entrar en una serie denúmeros o caracteres alternativos), oprima dosveces.

La bateríaEl teléfono viene con una bateríarecargable. El nivel de carga de labatería se muestra en la esquinasuperior derecha de la pantalla.

Instalación de la batería

1. Sostenga el teléfono conambas manos(como se muestra)y deslice la tapaposterior hacia abajo para retirarla.

2. Alinee los contactos de labatería con los terminales delteléfono en la parte superiordel compartimiento de labatería y empuje la bateríasuavemente hacia abajo hastaque encaje en su lugar.

3. Alinee la tapa posterior para que los ganchos en la tapa posterior seencajen en laranura del teléfono.

4. Deslice la tapaposterior haciaarriba hasta queencaje en sulugar.

Retirando la batería

1. Apague el teléfono y retire latapa posterior.

Cuando disminuya el nivel decarga de la batería, el sensor debatería baja le alerta de tresmaneras: sonando un tono audible, destellando el icono debatería y mostrando un mensajede alertas. Si el nivel de carga dela batería se hace demasiadobajo, el teléfono se apagaautomáticamente y no se guardaninguna función que esté encurso.

La evidencia científica disponibleno muestra que haya ningúnproblema de salud asociado conel uso de teléfonos inalámbricos.Sin embargo, no hay pruebas deque los teléfonos inalámbricossean totalmente seguros. Cuandolos teléfonos inalámbricos seusan emiten niveles bajos deenergía de radiofrecuencia (RF)en el rango de las microondas.También emiten muy bajos nivelesde RF cuando están en la pantallade inicio. -Mientras que altosniveles de RF pueden producirefectos en la salud (calentandolos tejidos), la exposición a RF debajo nivel no produce efectos decalentamiento y no causa efectosconocidos adversos para la salud.Muchos estudios sobre la exposi-ción a RF de bajo nivel no hanencontrado ningún efectobiológico. La investigación realizada hasta lafecha ha producido resultados contra-dictorios y muchos estudios han sufri-do de fallas en sus métodos de inves-tigación. Los experimentos realizadosen animales que investigan los efectosde la exposición a la energía de RFcaracterística de los teléfonos inalám-bricos generaron resultados contradic-torios que, por lo general, no puedenrepetirse en otros laboratorios. Unospocos estudios con animales, sinembargo, sugieren que bajos nivelesde RF podrían acelerar el desarrollodel cáncer en animales de laboratorio.Sin embargo, muchos de los estudiosque mostraron un desarrollo detumores aumentado usaron animalesque habían sido alterados genética-mente o tratados con sustancias

Juntos,estos estudios investigaron cualquierposible asociación entre el uso deteléfonos inalámbricos y cáncer pri-mario del cerebro, glioma, menin-gioma o neuroma acústica, tumorescerebrales o de las glándulas salivales,leucemia u otros cánceres. Una combinación de estudios delaboratorio y estudios epidemi-ológicos de gente que realmenteutiliza teléfonos inalámbricos siproporcionaría algunos de losdatos necesarios.Dentro de algunos años sepodrán realizar estudios deexposición animal durante toda lavida.
