Statement of the Problem
• Increase in the scope of media handled by libraries-Physical to electronic, with different file formats.
• Increase in the scope of library services-Circulation, electronic media, information service, KM and social networking.
• Different tools for library automation, IR or Digital Library, social networking and KM- Inconvenience to librarians & users . This situation defeats the purpose of 3rd and 4th laws of library science.
• Cost & Effort involved in IT infrastructure required in hosting, maintaining these different tools.
Other Influencing Factors
• Decrease in the size of library staff.
• Organization's growth and expansion and subsequent demand for establishing library services in different geographical locations with limited resources.
• Library services to the users from different generations(different reading habits) and changes in media preferences- Influence of Social media.
• Changing trends in Publication Industry and some of the publishers publishing books in print and electronic versions and some publishers ceasing print version and retaining electronic versions of journals /magazine
Other Influencing Factors
• Demand for libraries to become environmental friendly.
• Open Access Initiatives,
• Library Competitors which are not taken seriously by LIS profession but have detrimental impact on library and they are; – Self managed e-Journal and e-book databases (without librarian), – Online vendors allowing users to buy book and download on e-book
readers.– Improved e-readers which are now available at affordable prices – Commercial library service providers like Just Books Inc, Kwench Inc
providing library services in India threatening survival of corporate & special libraries.
Other Influencing Factors
• Increase in the cost of commercial Library automation software.
• Increase in the cost of publications and in contrast dwindling Library Budget
• Information Explosion, overload and the increasing need for the library services than never before
Solutions: Single tool/Platform
• A single tool with which the library community is familiar and further which can be exploited and used not only for library automation but can also be used for Digital Library resources, knowledge sharing and social networking.
Review of Literature
• Literature search on “Library automation tool” for “DL”, “KM” and “Social Media” – Ten important papers
• Single tool is still not a focused area of research among library researches.
• Though there are some theoretical papers which describes how a single tool can be used for library automation, DL,IR & KM but these concepts to be practically checked and realized by the library researchers or library software developers.
Review of Literature
• Hence decided on studying NewGenLib open source software which has all the features that meets the above mentioned requirements that is, a single tool with which the library community is familiar and further which can be exploited and used not only for library automation but also for DL/IR, KM and Social Networking.
Objectives
• To study the features of the NGL
• To create a demo collection
• To provide an overview of the features available in NGL for library automation.
Objectives
• To explain through demo collection on how the features of NGL can support managing IR and support federated search on external electronic resources
• To explain through demo collection on how the features of NGL help KM & Social Networking.
