The University

The University of the Sunshine Coast has a history of innovation and a reputation for quality. We deliver an outstanding educational experience for both international and Australian students.

Why choose USC?Established by the Australian Government, USC is a modern and dynamic university. The University has about 5,000 students and is ideal if you want a personal and friendly campus environment. It is a great place to meet Australian students and to experience the Australian lifestyle. Located on the edge of a national park, the campus is home to kangaroos and a variety of other distinctive Australian animals and trees. Our environmentally sensitive architecture has received national awards, and the campus offers modern learning resources, as well as an art gallery, bookshop, sporting facilities and eateries. It is only a short walk from the University to shops, banks, cafés and student accommodation villages.

What makes USC different? The combination of highly qualified research and teaching staff, innovative degree programs and technologically advanced facilities has been a key factor in the University’s success. Australia’s Good Universities Guide 2008 recognised USC’s achievements with the award of its highest five-star rating in three key categories—staff qualifications, electronic support and teaching quality.

Why is graduate satisfaction so high?Class sizes at USC are generally smaller than at many other universities. Students enjoy a high level of personal service and are able to interact with academic staff, creating an environment where students are valued as individuals and the exchange of ideas is not only supported, but embraced.

Will I meet Australian students?USC attracts students from around the world. At the last count, more than 40 countries were represented. But international students account for only 12 percent of the on-campus student population, so the majority of students you will meet and spend time with in lectures and tutorials will be Australian.

What can I study at USC?You can choose from a wide range of degree programs and courses in our three faculties of Arts and Social Sciences; Business; and Science, Health and Education.

Each year more exciting programs and research projects are developed to broaden students’ study options and career horizons. For information on all USC degree programs, see pages 6–15.

USC InternationalUSC International staff are the point of contact for international students before and after they arrive at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Staff are friendly, helpful and experienced, and are happy to provide answers to all your questions about studying at USC.

You will receive a comprehensive orientation to the University upon your arrival at USC, including a campus tour; an introduction to staff, campus facilities and services; and assistance with finalising your enrolment. You will also be invited to become involved in the social activities organised to help you meet other students.

Glossary

OrientationOrientation is a chance for you to familiarise yourself with university life before classes begin. It involves many activities that new students are encouraged to attend such as faculty introductions and information sessions, Library and IT tutorials, and Student Services workshops. You also have the opportunity to experience the lighter side of university life with social events, barbecues and bands. An Orientation program designed specifically for international students is also offered.

Undergraduate studentAn undergraduate student studies a bachelor degree or honours program at university. An undergraduate student may be studying at university for the first time, or may be a student who already holds a degree but is undertaking a second or subsequent degree at the same level.

Types of undergraduate programsA bachelor degree (eg Bachelor of Arts) at USC generally comprises 24 courses and takes three years of full-time study to complete.

A combined program is a combination of two bachelor degrees undertaken simultaneously (eg Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science). A combined program at USC generally comprises 32 courses and takes four years of full-time study to complete.

If you have already completed a bachelor degree, you may wish to enrol in an honours program. Equivalent to one year of full-time study, honours programs are offered by all three faculties. Honours programs are designed to advance students’ knowledge and experience, and prepare students for future research work and higher degrees by research.

Postgraduate studentA postgraduate student is enrolled in a postgraduate coursework program (eg Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Masters by coursework) or a higher degree by research (eg Masters by research or Doctorate). Postgraduate studies are normally undertaken after the completion of an undergraduate degree, or in some cases, on the basis of relevant work experience.

ProgramA program or degree is a sequence of courses leading to an award with which a student graduates—for example, a Bachelor of Business or Master of Arts.

CourseA course or subject is a component of a program that is normally one semester in length (eg Chemistry, or Marketing Theory and Practice). Courses are generally 12 units in value and the standard enrolment for a full-time student is four courses per semester.

ClassesA course may consist of a combination of classes including lectures and tutorials or practicals. Attendance at classes is expected, and some courses offer credit for participation. You are strongly advised to attend lectures, tutorials and practicals if you wish to succeed in your course.

LectureA lecture involves a member of the academic staff presenting themes and concepts related to a course of study to students enrolled in that course. Generally, students attend one lecture per course per week.

TutorialA tutorial is a forum for discussion and consolidation of the themes and concepts introduced in a lecture. Tutorial classes provide an atmosphere of discussion, presentation and debate. Generally, students attend one tutorial per course per week.

PracticalA practical offers students the opportunity to apply relevant skills (eg laboratory skills). Practical classes are usually 15–25 students in size.

Full-time studyThe standard full-time workload is four courses per semester. If you enrol in three or four courses per semester, you will be studying full-time. Please note that if you are attending university in Australia on a Student Visa, you cannot study on a part-time basis.

Contact hoursContact hours are the number of hours students are expected to attend classes on campus (ie lectures and tutorials or practicals). A full-time student spends about 12 hours per week in classes, plus between 20 and 40 hours studying per week (five to 10 hours per course). You are responsible for coordinating your own timetable and your learning is self-directed. Regular class attendance is required to both ensure academic performance and satisfy Student Visa requirements.

AssessmentUniversity assessment methods vary between courses. Students may be assessed by examination towards the end of each semester; by regular assessment through assignments, essays or presentations; or through a combination of these. Course outlines are available online and list the individual course assessment items. Honours students are assessed on a combination of their coursework and thesis, while higher degree by research students must submit a thesis or dissertation for examination by experts in the relevant field of study.

Academic yearMost undergraduate and postgraduate coursework programs, including honours and combined programs, run on a semester basis with the year divided into two semesters. In 2009, Semester 1 classes begin on 23 February, and Semester 2 classes on 27 July. In the Faculty of Business, some postgraduate coursework programs are run on a session basis with the year divided into three equal sessions. Study Abroad USC’s Study Abroad program is designed for students who are already enrolled in degree programs at another university or education institution outside Australia. It may also appeal to international students who would like to study in Australia before enrolling at a higher education institution in their home country.

As a Study Abroad student, you earn credit towards your home degree while enjoying a valuable international and intercultural experience in Australia. The program allows you to register online for classes at USC, so you will know exactly what you will be studying before you arrive.

What can I study at USC?You can choose from a wide range of courses in our three faculties of Arts and Social Sciences; Business; and Science, Health and Education.

Many courses offer insights into Australian society from historical, political, environmental, geographical, business, scientific, social and literary perspectives. There is also a wide range of courses with a more global perspective.

You can make your course choices before you arrive so you will know exactly what you will be studying. Each year more courses and programs are developed to broaden students’ study options.

Areas of study include:Creative Writing, Journalism, Public Relations, Design, International Business, Marketing, Management, Biotechnology, Tourism, Environmental Restoration, Marine Science, Sport and Exercise Science, Psychology, Nursing Science, International Relations and Communication Studies.

To see USC’s full range of courses, please visit <www.usc.edu.au/international>.

Please note: not all courses are offered in every semester and some have prerequisite requirements.

Can I gain work experience? The international internship program offers Study Abroad students high-quality, individually designed work placements in an extensive range of professions. An internship will generally be the equivalent of one course. Students who wish to pursue internships need to make arrangements well in advance.

How to applyYou can choose to study for one or two semesters in the USC Study Abroad program. To apply, contact the international office at your home university, or complete the Study Abroad Application Form on pages 31–32 of this guide and return it to USC International. Application forms are also available on the USC website <www.usc.edu.au/international>.

Overseas Student Health CoverOverseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is compulsory for all students who study in Australia on a Student Visa, and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship requires that each student maintain OSHC for the duration of their Student Visa.

USC will provide OSHC free-of-charge for undergraduate, postgraduate and fee-paying Study Abroad students, although not for accompanying family members. This cover will be with USC’s preferred provider. Students can arrange their own cover, but will receive no refund from USC if they choose to do this.

Please note that English language and Exchange program students are not covered by this provision and are required to obtain OSHC from a recognised Australian provider of health insurance. The University is able to arrange OSHC on behalf of English language and Exchange students and on behalf of accompanying family members. To avoid the risks of students losing cover, and to provide cost-effective OSHC, USC requires all students who request OSHC to be arranged on their behalf to pay for visa-length cover.

Non-compliance with this requirement constitutes a breach of Student Visa conditions and the Student Visa may be cancelled. Students are individually responsible for ensuring that OSHC is current at all times and renewed as required. If OSHC is allowed to lapse, students (and their families) are responsible for paying any medical costs incurred, which can be extremely expensive. Recent cases report students incurring medical bills of up to A$100,000—simply due to students not having valid OSHC.

Course-related costsThe cost of books and other course-related materials depends on the courses studied. Some courses require additional materials, for example laboratory coats (approximately A$35) or art supplies, while design students need to consider printing costs.

As a general guide, allow A$400 per semester for new textbooks. Second-hand textbooks can become available at reduced prices—visit the Student Guild website <www.uscstudentguild.com.au> for more information.

English language program students, except those studying in the Cambridge programs, are supplied with textbooks on a loan system to be returned once the course is complete.

Living costsAn international student would normally require between A$275 and A$325 per week to live comfortably on the Sunshine Coast. These amounts are in addition to airfares, visa application, health cover and tuition fees, and will vary depending on your lifestyle and preferences. You will need to allow more for living expenses if you have a spouse or dependant child accompanying you to Australia. You should allow at least A$8,000 per year for the cost of each child’s education.

Working in AustraliaAs an international student studying in Australia on a Student Visa issued on or after 26 April 2008, you will be eligible to work. You may work up to 20 hours per week during the semester, and full-time during University breaks. Money earned from working in Australia should supplement your income, and not be used as your only source of income.

Transfer policyYou must remain enrolled at the University of the Sunshine Coast for the first six months of your program or for the duration of your program if it is less than six months. When requested, USC will automatically give you a letter of release if you provide a letter from another registered education provider confirming that a valid enrolment offer has been made.

How to applyThere are some simple steps to follow to apply for study at the University of the Sunshine Coast. USC International staff are happy to help with any questions you may have <+61 7 5430 2843; [email protected]>.

Important steps1. Select your preferred programs from this

guide or from the USC website <www.usc.edu.au/international>.

2. Remove the appropriate application forms from this guide (pages 29-32). Application information, including application forms, is also available through University representative agents, IDP offices and Australian Education International (AEI) offices overseas.

3. Complete the application form/s and attach all required documentation (please refer to the checklists on the forms).

4. Complete an Application for Advanced Standing form, available at <www.usc.edu.au/students/handbook/rulespolicies/advstanding/apply>, if you intend to apply for advanced standing.

5. Submit your application to:USC InternationalUniversity of the Sunshine CoastMaroochydore DC Qld 4558Australia Tel: +61 7 5430 2843Fax: +61 7 5430 2836Email: [email protected]

6. USC International will assess your application. If you are eligible, you will receive an offer of admission. If you apply through an approved USC agent, all correspondence relating to your application will be forwarded to that agent.

When to applyWhile the University accepts applications at any time throughout the year, you are encouraged to submit your application as early as possible before your desired start date.

For more detailed information on the application process, visit Steps to Study on our website <www.usc.edu.au/students/international/steps>.

Visa requirementsAs an international student you will be required to obtain a visa that permits study, for example a Student Visa. Student Visas are only available for full-time study in programs offered on campus in Australia.

Depending on your nationality and proposed program’s length, you may be able to include family members, such as a spouse or dependant child, in your Student Visa application.

Student Visa application procedures, requirements and processing times vary depending on your nationality and the academic program for which you apply. Contact the Australian overseas mission or embassy closest to you, or the nearest Department of Immigration and Citizenship office (if you are already in Australia) for advice. You may also visit the Department of Immigration and Citizenship website <www.immi.gov.au/students>.

Once you have accepted an offer to study from USC, and paid your tuition fees, USC International will provide you with a Confirmation of Enrolment form. This document will be required as part of your Student Visa application.

Please note that international students are those who are not Australian or New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents and who intend to study under a Student Visa or temporary entry permit. The University is a registered provider of international education as defined in the Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000 (CRICOS Provider Number: 01595D).

Advanced standing (credit) for previous studies If you have partly or fully completed a recognised course at a university or other post secondary institution, you may be eligible for advanced standing (credit). If advanced standing is granted, it may reduce the number of courses you will be required to complete at the University of the Sunshine Coast to meet the requirements of your program of study.

Advanced standing is assessed at the application stage for international undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students. To facilitate timely processing of applications for advanced standing, all students are strongly encouraged to lodge their applications by the end of the first week of their first semester of study. All applications should be lodged within the first two semesters of study of a full-time enrolment.

For an application to be considered, you must provide:

1. A completed Application for Advanced Standing form, available at <www.usc.edu.au/students/handbook/rulespolicies/advstanding/apply>.

2. A certified copy of your official Statement of Academic Record from the institutions at which previous studies were undertaken. Please note that individual semester result notices are not an official record of previous study, except in the case of TAFE courses.

3. A course synopsis for any courses for which you are seeking advanced standing. Synopses must include the unit value of the course undertaken, level of the course (introductory or advanced) and the number of hours of contact/instruction undertaken.

“I guess the Australian culture is very laidback. People are always happy to have a chat with you and people here are very helpful. I will leave USC with a lot of precious memories.”
