Medical textile:• Combination of textile technology and medical sciences

has resulted into a new field called medical textile.

• A general term which describes a textile structure which has been designed and produced for use in any of a variety of medical application, including implantable application.

• So, medical textile define as “fiber based products and structure used in first aid or the clinical treatment of a wound or medical condition.

Implantable materials : These are the textile structure that can be used inside the

human body foe various purpose, such as closure(sutures) or replacement of surgery (vascular graft, artificial ligament etc). Available products are sutures, vascular graft, artificial ligament, artificial joints, scaffolds for tissue growth and so on, each providing suitable properties for the end-use.

Use of implantable material : Suture : suture for wound closure are either

monofilament or multifilament threads that are categories as either biodegradable or non biodegradable. Biodegradable suture are mainly used for internal wound closure and non-biodegradable suture are use to close exposed wound and remove when the wound is sufficiently healed.

Use of implantable material : Cardiovascular Implant : vascular graft are used in

surgery to replace damaged thick arteries. It is produce from polyester (Dacron and Teflon). Artificial heart valves, which are caged ball valves with metal struts, are covered with polyester (e.g. Dacron) fabrics in order to provide a means of suturing the valve to the surrounding tissue.

Use of implantable material : Artificial Ligaments :

• An artificial ligaments is medical device for joining ends of two bone.

• The artificial ligaments are made from man made fibers like polyester. The usage of ligaments varies based on type of operation.

• The artificial ligaments generally subject of lot of wear and tear. They also carry risk of septic arthritis.

Use of implantable material :Artificial Tendon :

• Artificial tendon are used in hernia and abdominal wall replacement, where mechanical strength and fixation are very important.

• The tendon could either be woven or knitted based on the requirement of strength. Polypropylene, Polyester tendon is primarily used in hernia repair as it is resistant to infections.

Use of implantable material :Artificial heart valves :

• Artificial heart valves are implanted in the heart of the patients who need treatment for valves related diseases.

• The natural heart valve need a replacement when two or more valves stop functioning properly.

• The artificial heart valves produce from polyester fiber.

Use of implantable material :Artificial Joints :

• The orthopedic joints are used for patients suffering from arthritis and accidental damage of joints.

• The joints are made such that they are compatible with human body.

• The technical textile component in joints is Ultra high molecular weight High density polyethylene material.

Use of implantable material :Artificial Kidney :

• Kidney serves the filtering mechanism of the blood. The kidney has a mechanical substitute in kidney dialysis machine.

• The kidney dialysis machine is outside the body and purifies the blood using a filter called haemodialysor.

• The haemodialysor is made primarily of polysulphone and polyacetate.

Use of implantable material :Artificial Liver :

• In this system, patient’s blood or plasma is pumped into bioreactor, which are hollow fiber device, seeded on the dialysate side with freshly isolated or cryopreserved procine hepatocytes or transformed human hepatoma cell line.

Use of implantable material :Artificial Skin :• Skin grafting is the procedure of replacing dead skin with

live skin.• There are two primary methods of skin grafting-

Autologous skin graft and allograft transfers.• The autologous skin graft transfers skin from one part of

the body to another. The allograft transfers skin from the bodies of other pepole/cadaver.
