Robert V. Colarossi President of USA

Gymnastics

I'd like to begin by thanking each and everyone of the USA Gymnastics staff members for their commitment to excellence and hard work this summer. It is amazing what we have accomplished as a team: the organization and execution of five premier events including the Rhythmic World Championships, Congress and U.s. Gymnastics Championships with five diSCiplines, the Trampoline and Tumbling World Cup and the TJ Maxx International Gymnastics Challenge. The level of preparation of our athletes is superior and I'd also Like to commend the readiness of the member services and education department, the coverage on the web and in our publications, and the efforts of the marketing and PR department. It is truly a team effort and I'm proud of the job well done.

The 2002 U.s. Championships and Congress in Cleveland were a success for all involved. Thank you to everyone who took part in the excitement. One of the highlights from the week that I'd like to point out was the Hall of Fame luncheon, which featured John Macready and John RoethLisberger as masters of ceremonies. Hall of Fame inductees included George Beckstead, Dickie Browning, Nard Cazzell, Bil Copp, Trent Dimas, Jair Lynch, Alexandra Nicholson, Betty Okino, and

Kerri Strug. More than 300 people attended the luncheon, which also recognized many hard working individuals as recipients of special awards.

The Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation and the city of New Orleans, once again, proved an outstanding host for a USA Gymnastics event. The 2002 Rhythmic World Championships took place July 12-14, the first time to be held in the U.s ., and was a complete success. The u.s. Rhythmic Group team, who trained together in Lake Placid prior to the event, made a strong international showing. We plan to continue the national training program as a result of their performance and with hopes of the u.s. team being on the floor in 2004 at the Olympic Games in Athens.

USA Gymnastics also played host to the 2002 Trampoline and Tumbling World Cup, August 22-25, in Greensboro, NC. It was a very exciting competition with a plethora of international talent. The u.s. competitors fared well as Ryan Weston and David Ford earned the bronze in synchronized trampoline while Weston also earned fifth in men's trampoline. I'm pleased to say that tumblers Casey Finley and Lindsey Blundell advanced to the prestigious World Cup Final this November in Hannover, Germany. This is an impressive accomplishment and I wish them good luck.

National Gymnastics Day, which took place Saturday, August 24, 2002, proved successful for the fourth year in a row. Hundreds of clubs throughout the country hosted National Gymnastics Day events at their gyms, and several clubs helped raise money for the Children's Miracle Network through Cartwheel-a-Thons and other fund raising activities. I hope you caught Bela Karolyi and sports acro pair Kris Duncan and Megan Vaughn on NBC's "Today Show," on August 19. What great exposure for gymnastics and our newest discipline!

Moving forward, the 2002 World Championships are coming up November 20-24, in Debrecen, Hungary. This competition will crown the individual event world champions on both the men's and women's side. The top athletes from the U.S. Championships will attend a selection camp to determine the 2002 World Championships teams. The women's selection camp is September 22-27, at the Karolyi ranch in Texas, and the men's camp is October 9-13 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado.

The TJ Maxx International Gymnastics Challenge took place Aug. 22 at the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim. It featured national champions Tasha Schwikert and Paul Hamm against Russian Olympic Champions Alexei Nemov and Svetlana Khorkina. The event was a great preview of the competition venue for the upcoming 2003 World Championships. Hopefully you caught the action of the T.J. Maxx International Gymnastics Challenge on NBC, September 1.

Strip tickets for the 2003 World Championships are on sale now, so be sure to order yours soon. There was an overwhelming response to the exclusive strip ticket offer to our members only, and this offer has just been released to the general public. It's truly the best value available. Seats in the lower bowl are going quickly so order now as you don't want to miss this great gymnastics spectacle!

"I think the new vaulting table is a pro. I do a Yurchenko vault, and I feel much safer and confident on the new vaulting horse than the old one. On the old horse I was afraid to miss my hands, but the vaulting table is pretty hard to miss!" Tabitha Yim

"I think the new vault is great. It's much safer and allows for new and exciting vaults. However, I think that it makes it much more difficult for little kids to learn vault." Guard Young

2002 RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Rhythmic World Championships took place July 12-14 in New Orleans, La. , the first time on U.S. soil. There were 20

groups competing in the competition and each country performed two routines, one using two balls and three ropes while the other routine utilized five ribbons.

The reigning World and Olympic Champions from Russia performed to near perfection in order to win the gold medal with a score of 49.050. This title makes the fourth for Russia at a World Championships including 1992, 1994 and 1999.

One of the Russian gymnasts said, "Coming into the competition, the grouping was difficult. Only two of us have been to big competitions. Yes, we made some little mistakes, but the new rules are much harder than the old. All the teams are growing. You must be able to deal with your nerves."

The Belarus team, which has medaled consistently at the World Championships, including third in 1999, had to count one very small drop during day one of competition at the beginning of an otherwise very impressive routine. During day two, the Belarus team showed a high energy routine with a lot of tosses and good execution. Their final score was a 47.675 for second place.

Greece was second after the first day of competition but dropped to thi rd after the final round . Greece had a clean overall performance with one small drop that moved

them to third behind Belarus with a score of 47.400.

The USA started day one with its ribbon routine which was performed to the song "America" from West Side Story. There were a few minor technical errors in their routine but overall it was very solid with high energy, much to the delight of the audience who chanted "USA" as the score was posted (19.650). The score was met with mixed feelings by the crowd, some of whom booed the score. During day two, the group performed with three ropes and two balls and did an excellent job, having one of the most original routines at Championships. They had no drops throughout their exercise. It was a very solid performance and scored

20.500. The group finished in 13th place.

"They did it today (finals), they performed their routine well and this is the important thing for us," said Efrossina Anguelova. "However, I'm very disappointed by our final score."

The U.S. group has been training in Lake Placid, N.Y. at the Olympic Training Center since October 2001. They had to make numerous sacrifices including living away from their family and friends in order to achieve their goal of competing in a World Championships. The group and their coach, Elena Savenkova, should be commended for a job well done.

The group included: Nina Chubrikova, Mariah Kraker, Masha Krakovskaya, Taryn Look, Marissa Pierce, and Kathryn Rogers.

~Sports Acrobatics ~TEAM TRIALS By Alexa Hukari

The 2002 Sports Acrobatics Team Trials were held in Cleveland, Ohio, August 9- 10. This competition along with the National Championships held in New Orleans, La ., July 14-18 selected the National Team, World Championships Team, and the world Age Group Games Team . Both the world Championships and the World Age Group Games will be held in Riesa, Germany at the end of September. Held in the USA Gymnastics Congress Exhibit Hall, the competition drew a large crowd of spectators who were able to see sports acrobatics for the first time and experience the beauty and strength of the sport.

The women's trio competition was tight. The women's trio of Samantha Schabow, Holli Morris, and Danielle Heider finished first and earned a spot on the National Team and the opportunity to represent the U.S. at the Sports Acrobatics World Age Group Games (SAWAGG). Sabina Knight, Tami Annonson, and Heather Downs placed second, earned a slot on the National Team, and were selected to compete for the U.S. on the World Championships Team.

In the mixed pair division, veterans Arthur Davis and Shenea Booth placed first and secured a spot on both the National Team and the World Championships Team. Mixed pairs Kris Duncan and Megan Vaughan along with Michael Rodrigues and Allyse Sanchez were also selected to the National Team.

In a strong field of women's pairs, Olivia Solo and Clare Brunson came out on top. Joining them on the National Team are Marie Annonson and Brittany Horrell along with Jessica Gardner and Nicolette Bohnert.

TRAMPOLINE & TUMBLING Junior Olympic National Championships Indianapolis, Indiana was the site of the 2002 Trampoline & Tumbling Jr. Olympic National Championships, held July 10-16. Over 1200 athletes participated in the event, as National Champions were named in Levels 5 through 10, ages 6 & Under to 17 & Over. "I think the event was very successful," said Ann Sims, Senior Program Director for T & T. "The venue worked out well for this event, the sessions were almost all on time and the athletes seemed to have a lot of fun. We saw a lot of improvement in the athletes this year, as well." Results are available on the T & T page of the web site: wvvw.usa-gymnastics.org.

New to J.O. Championships this year was the Regional All-Stars competition. Each region fielded a team, comprised of their Level 10 champions in trampoline, tumbling and double mini. In a rousing display of regional loyalty, spectators from each region vied with each other to cheer the loudest, while the Regional All -Stars competed for first place in each discipline, as well as the overall Grand Champion Team. Region rv came away with the title of Grand Champion Team and also took first in Girl's Tumbling and Boy's Trampoline. Region III won the Girl's Trampoline and Girl's and Boy's Double Mini competitions and also finished second overall. Region II took first in Boy's Tumbling.

In addition to all the other activity at J.O. Championships, the elite athletes provided some inspiring performances at the U. S. Elite Challenge, held July 14. Seventy-two Junior Elite and Senior Elite athletes competed for not only the Elite Challenge title, but for points that, combined with their U. S. Championships points, will determine funding for the coming year. Results from the Elite Challenge are also available on the web site.
