most populated metropolitan areas. Nine of the region’s states are among the top 20 states that lost the most open space and farmland to economic development in the 1990s.
Key Habitats and EcosystemsTheSoutheasthasavarietyofdiverseanduniqueecosystemsandhabitatsincluding coastal marshes, coral reefs,bottomlandhardwoods,theAppalachianandOzarkMountains,caves,andlongleafpineforests.
The Southeast Region is home to 26,000 miles of tidal shoreline and its coastalflatsinclude86millionacresofcoastalhabitatandfishandwildliferesourcesandcoralreefs.
Regional Budget
Conservation Successes and ChallengesCarbon sequestration - Launched a carbonsequestrationprogramworkingwithenergycompanies.TheServiceanditspartnershaveadded40,000acres to the National Wildlife Refuge System,restoredatotalof80,000acres,andplantedmorethan22millionnativehardwoodtrees.
Southeastern Aquatic Resources Partnership (SARP) - More thantwodozen state andfederalfisheriesconservation agencies and privateconservationorganizationsarepartofthemostaggressiveregionalpartnershipintheNationalFishHabitatActionPlan.TheagencyandpartnersareusinglandscapeconservationtoolstoconserveandrestorevaluablepopulationsofaquaticspeciesacrosstheRegion.
Water issues - Parts of the Southeast arefacinghistoricdroughtconditions.Today,34percentoffishspeciesand90percentofmusselsinperilnationwideareintheSoutheast.Waterqualityandquantityareaffectingcommunitiesinwaysunimaginablejust25yearsago.LongermoreintensedroughtsinGeorgia,Alabama,Florida,Tennessee,andacrosstheCarolinasareimpactingfishandwildlife,localeconomies,andcitizens;andtheServiceisplayingakeyroleinconservationsolutions.
Marine coastal issues - Accelerated climatechangepredictionsforsealevel rise along the tidal shoreline willimpactfish,wildlife,andtheirhabitatsoverthenext50to100years.Thiswillhavesignificantimpactsonthisregion’stwomostextraordinaryecological restoration efforts – the EvergladesandcoastalwetlandsalongtheGulfCoast.Morethan1.2millionacresofwetlandsandmarsheshavebeenlostsince1932alongtheLouisianacoast.
