GENERAL INFORMATIONVOLTA herbicide is recommended for selectivepostemergence control of certain broadleaf weeds in wheat(including durum) barley oat tnticale post harvestburndown pre plant burndown fallow corn and soybeansVOLTA is a dry flowable granule to be mixed in water orother recommended carrier and applied as a uniform

broadcast spray It 10 noncorrosive nonflammable non-volatile and does not freeze

BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY ANDENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Best results are obtained when VOLTA is applied to youngactively growing weeds The use rate will depend on weedspectrum and size of weed at time of application The degreeof control and duration of effect are dependent on rate usedsensitivity and size of target weed and environmentalconditions at the time of and following application

VOLTA stops growth of susceptible weeds rapidly Howevertypical symptoms of dying weeds (discoloration) may not benoticeable for 1-3 weeks after application (2-5 weeks for wildgarlic) depending on the environmental conditions and weedsusceptibility Warm moist conditions following treatmentpromote the activity of VOLTA while cold dry conditionsdelay the activity Weeds hardened off by cold weather ordrought stress will be less susceptible

A vigorous growing crop will aid weed control by shading andproviding competition for weeds However a dense cropcanopy at time of application can intercept spray and result inreduced weed control Weeds may not be adequatelycontrolled in areas of thin crop stand or seeding skips

Applications made to weeds that are in the cotyledonstage larger than the size indicated or to weeds understress may result in unsatisfactory control

VOLTA may injure crops that are stressed from adverseenvironmental conditions (such as extreme temperaturesor moisture) abnormal soil conditions or culturalpractices In addition different varieties of the crop mayhave differing levels of sensitivity to treatment withVOLTA under otherwise normal conditions Treatment ofsensitive crop varieties may injure crops

Weed control may be reduced if rainfall or snowfall occurssoon after application Several hours of dry weather areneeded to allow VOLTA to be sufficiently absorbed byweed foliage

To reduce the potential of crop injury in cereals tank mixVOLTA with 2 4-D (ester formulations perform best-seethe TANK MIXTURES section of this label) and applyafter the crop is in the tillering stage of growth

Other Grass Control ProductsVOLTA can be tank mixed with grass control productsAntagonism generally does not occur However it isrecommended that you first consult your stateexperiment station university extension agent or dealerfrom whom you purchased the product as to the potential forantagonism before using the mixture If no information isavailable limit the initial use of VOLTA and the grass productto a small area

FungicidesVOLTA may be tank mixed or used sequentially withfungicides registered for use on cereal grains

InsecticidesVOLTA may be tank mixed or used sequentially withinsecticides registered for use on cereal grains Howeverunder certain conditions (drought stress cold weather or ifthe crop is in the 2-4 leaf stage) tank mixes or sequentialapplications of VOLTA with organophosphate insecticides(such as LORSBAN) may produce temporary crop yellowingor in severe cases crop injury The potential for crop injuryis greatest when wide fluctuations in day/night temperaturesoccur just prior to or soon after application Test thesemixtures in a small area before treating large areas

Do not apply VOLTA within 60 days of crop emergencewhere an organophosphate insecticide has been applied asan m-furrow treatment because crop injury may result

Do not use VOLTA plus malathion because crop injurywill result

Liquid Nitrogen Solution FertilizerLiquid nitrogen fertilizer solutions may be used as a carrier inplace of water Run a tank mix compatibility test beforemixing VOLTA in fertilizer solution

VOLTA must first be slurned with water and then added toliquid nitrogen solutions (e g 28-0 0 32-0-0) Ensure thatthe agitator is running while the VOLTA is added Use of thismixture may result in temporary crop yellowing and stunting

If using low rates of liquid nitrogen fertilizer in the spraysolution (less than 50% of the spray solution volume) theaddition of surfactant is necessary Add surfactant at 1/2 pint-1 quart per 100 gal of spray solution (0 06 -0 25% v/v)based on local recommendations

Page 13: US EPA, Pesticide Product Label, VOLTA AGRICULTURAL ... · r [Front Container Label/Optional if Booklet is used as front Container Label] VOLTA™ AGRICULTURAL HERBICIDE For Use on

When using high rates of liquid nitrogen fertilizer in the spraysolution adding surfactant increases the risk of crop injuryConsult your agricultural dealer consultant fieldsman orROTAM representative for a specific recommendation beforeadding an adjuvant to these tank mixtures

If 2 4-D or MCPA is included as a tankmix with VOLTAherbicide additional surfactant may not be needed whenusing liquid nitrogen fertilizer solutions Consult youragricultural dealer consultant field advisor or ROTAMrepresentative for a specific recommendation before addingan adjuvant to these tank mixtures

Note In certain areas east of the Mississippi riverunacceptable crop response may occur with use ofstraight or dilute nitrogen fertilizer carrier solutionswhere cold temperatures or widely fluctuating day/nighttemperatures exist In these areas consult youragricultural dealer, consultant, field advisor, or ROTAMrepresentative for a specific recommendation beforeusing nitrogen fertilizer carrier solutions

Liquid nitrogen fertilizer solutions that contain sulfur canincrease crop response

Do not use low rates of liquid fertilizer as a substitute for asurfactant

Do not use with liquid fertilizer solutions with a pH less than30

SOYBEANS

APPLICATION TIMING (POST EMERGENCE)VOLTA herbicide may be applied to soybeans any timeafter the first trifoliate has expanded fully Apply no laterthan 60 days before harvest

Early-season soybean injury may result from tank-mixapplications with other registered herbicides Injury maymanifest itself as stunting (seen as a reduction in leaf sizeor mternode length) yellowing leaves and/or red veinsand necrosis in the leaves and petioles The potential forsoybean injury is most pronounced with applicationsmade dunng hot humid conditions under widelyfluctuating weather or temperature conditions or withapplications to soybeans under stress

USE RATES IN SOYBEANSMake a single application of VOLTA at a rate of 0 083(1/12) ounce per acre for selective postemergencebroadleaf weed control on conventional soybeanvarieties

VOLTA at up to 1/3 ounce per acre is recommended foruse on soybeans designated STS Severe injury ordeath of soybeans will result if any soybeans notdesignated as STS are treated with more than 1/12ounce of VOLTA Multiple applications of VOLTA may be

The interaction of many equipment and weather-relatedfactors determines the potential for spray drift Theapplicator is responsible for considenng all these factorswhen making application decisions

AVOIDING SPRAY DRIFT IS THE RESPONSIBILITYOF THEAPPLICATOR

IMPORTANCE OF DROPLET SIZE

The most effective way to reduce dnft potential is to applylarge droplets (>150 - 200 microns) The best driftmanagement strategy is to apply the largest droplets thatprovide sufficient coverage and control The presence ofsensitive species nearby the environmental conditions andpest pressure may affect how an applicator balances dnftcontrol and coverage APPLYING LARGER DROPLETSREDUCES DRIFT POTENTIAL, BUT WILL NOTPREVENT DRIFT IF APPLICATIONS ARE MADEIMPROPERLY OR UNDER UNFAVORABLEENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS See WINDTEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY and TEMPERATUREINVERSIONS sections of this label

Controlling Droplet Size - General Techniques• Volume - Use high flow rate nozzles to apply the highestpractical spray volume Nozzles with higher rated flowsproduce larger droplets• Pressure - Use the lower spray pressuresrecommended for the nozzle Higher pressure reducesdroplet size and does not improve canopy penetrationWHEN HIGHER FLOW RATES ARE NEEDED, USE AHIGHER-CAPACITY NOZZLE INSTEAD OFINCREASING PRESSURE• Nozzle Type - Use a nozzle type that is designed for theintended application With most nozzle types narrower

spray angles pdnft nozzles

i reduce larger droplets Consider using low-

Controlling Droplet Size - Aircraft• Number of Nozzles - Use the minimum number ofnozzles with the highest flow rate that provide uniformcoverage• Nozzle Orientation - Orienting nozzles so that the sprayis emitted backwards parallel to the air stream will producelarger droplets than other orientations• Nozzle Type - Solid stream nozzles (such as disc andcore with swirl plate removed) onented straight backproduce larger droplets than other nozzle types• Boom Length - The boom length should not exceed 3/4of the wing or rotor length - longer booms increase driftpotential• Application Height - Application more than 10 ft abovethe canopy increases the potential for spray dnft

BOOM HEIGHT

Setting the boom at the lowest referenced height (ifspecified) which provides uniform coverage reduces theexposure of droplets to evaporation and wind Forground equipment the boom should remain level withthe crop and have minimal bounce

WIND

Drift potential increases at wind speeds of less than 3mph (due to inversion potential) or more than 10 mphHowever many factors including droplet size andequipment type determine drift potential at any given windspeed AVOID APPLICATIONS DURING GUSTY ORWINDLESS CONDITIONS

Note Local terrain can influence wind patterns Everyapplicator should be familiar with local wind patterns andhow they affect spray drift

TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY

When making applications in hot and dry conditions setup equipment to produce larger droplets to reduceeffects of evaporation

TEMPERATURE INVERSIONS

Drift potential is high during a temperature inversionTemperature inversions restrict vertical air mixing whichcauses small suspended droplets to remain close to theground and move laterally in a concentrated cloudTemperature inversions are charactenzed by increasingtemperature with altitude and are common on nights withlimited cloud cover and light to no wind They begin toform as the sun sets and often continue into the morningTheir presence can be indicated by ground fog howeverif fog is not present inversions can also be identified bythe movement of smoke from a ground source or anaircraft smoke generator Smoke that layers and moves

laterally in a concentrated cloud (under row windconditions) indicates an inversion while smoke thatmoves upward and rapidly dissipates indicates goodvertical air mixing

SHIELDED SPRAYERS

Shielding the boom or individual nozzles can reduce theeffects of wind However it is the responsibility of theapplicator to verify that the shields are preventing drift andnot interfering with uniform deposition of the product

AIR ASSISTED (AIR BLAST)FIELD CROP SPRAYERS

Air assisted field crop sprayers carry droplets to the targetvia a downward directed air stream Some may reducethe potential for drift but if a sprayer is unsuitable for theapplication and/or set up improperly high drift potentialcan result It is the responsibility of the applicator todetermine that a sprayer is suitable for the intendedapplication is configured properly and that drift is notoccurring

Note Air assisted field sprayers can affect productperformance by affecting spray coverage and canopypenetration Consult the SPRAY EQUIPMENT section ofthis label to determine if use of an air assist sprayer isrecommended

RESISTANCE

When herbicides that affect the same biological site of actionare used repeatedly over several years to control the sameweed species in the same field naturally-occurring resistantbiotypes may survive a correctly applied herbicide treatmentpropagate and become dominant in that field Adequatecontrol of these resistant weed biotypes cannot be expected

If weed control is unsatisfactory it may be necessary toretreat the problem area using a product affecting a differentsite of action

To better manage herbicide resistance through delaying theproliferation and possible dominance of herbicide resistantweed biotypes it may be necessary to change culturalpractices within and between crop seasons such as using acombination of tillage retreatment tank-mix partners and/orsequential herbicide applications that have a different site ofaction Weed escapes that are allowed to go to seed willpromote the spread of resistant biotypes See the WeedsControlled section of this label for additional informationon managing herbicide resistant weed biotypes

It is advisable to keep accurate records of pesticides appliedto individual fields to help obtain information on the spreadand dispersal of resistant biotypes Consult your agriculturaldealer consultant applicator and/or appropriate stateagricultural extension service representative for specific

This product may be used as part of an Integrated PestManagement (IPM) program that can include biologicalcultural and genetic practices aimed at preventing economicpest damage IPM principles and practices include fieldscouting or other detection methods correct target pestidentification population monitoring and treating when targetpest populations reach locally determined action thresholdsConsult your state cooperative extension serviceprofessional consultants or other qualified authorities todetermine appropnate action treatment threshold levels fortreating specific pest/crop systems in your area

PRECAUTIONS
