C. Standards

Introduction In keeping with the true spirit of an organization of volunteers, the possession and wear of the Auxiliary uniform by Auxiliarists should be a matter of personal pride.

When in uniform, the Auxiliarist is a representative of DHS, the Coast Guard,

Auxiliary, and the U.S. Government. Appearance, uniform fit, and grooming shall

reflect the pride of that representation.

C.1. Setting an Example

Elected and appointed leaders are expected to wear the uniform properly to set an

example. They should help other Auxiliarists develop proper habits of personal

appearance, hygiene, and grooming when wearing the uniform. Uniforms shall be

pressed, clean, fit properly, and be in good repair.

When to Wear Uniforms• On board operational facilities, under orders -

working or undress uniform• When conducting VSCs - working or undress

uniform• When an instructor or aide in PE classes -

undress blue, tropical blue, winter dress blue or service dress blue

• When conducting a Marine Dealer visit - service dress blue or tropical blue

When to Wear Uniforms (continued)• Hot weather uniform when doing patrols,

VSCs and ATON missions - when warranted• DIRAUX or Auxiliary elected officer or person

in charge of mission (i.e., Coxswain), may require specific uniforms for specific missions

• ALL members on missions must be in identical uniforms

When Wearing the Uniform is Prohibited• In public places of dubious reputation• When engaged in political activities• When in a foreign country• Don’t wear civilian outer wear (coat, sweater,

jacket, etc.) with the uniform• Home-made uniforms are prohibited.

Uniform Standards• Wear the uniform with Pride, as a

representative of the United States Coast Guard, Reserve, Auxiliary and the Civilian counterparts.

• Elected officers should set the example.• ALL members of the Auxiliary should be

cognizant of member’s uniform integrity.

“Service-specific” StandardsWhen in Uniform…

• Hats should be worn squarely on the head.• Sleeves should not be rolled up except as

authorized with the ODU.• Bottom of pants should touch shoe tops with

Dress Uniforms.• Except for formal uniforms, a female skirt

hemline will be no higher than the crease in the back of the knee nor lower than 2 inches below the crease.

• Wristwatches, rings and bracelets okay if in good taste.

“Service-specific” Standards When in Uniform (continued)

• Men cannot wear earrings. Women can wear small pearl studs (<1/4 inch in diameter). Diamond studs can be worn with dress uniform.

• Necklaces, chains, suspenders, pens, handkerchiefs, etc… should not be visible.

• Hair should be neat and clean and above the collar (for men) or at the collar (for women).

• Coast Guard Blue (four-in-hand) tie.• Black shoes and socks.• Metal collar devices, name tag,

ribbons, Qualification devices.• Garrison or Combination cap• Wooly-Pully can be worn with

enhanced or soft shoulder boards• Outerwear: trench coat, windbreaker,
