Causes of the Civil War

Cause 1:  One of the main causes of the Civil War (C.W.) were the sectional differences between the North and South.

Cause 2:  The Issue of States Rights1. States rights was seen as the overwhelming cause of the Civil War.

2. In fact, when the armies formed for the C.W. only a small minority of the soldiers on    either side would have declared the reason they joined the army was to fight either    “for” or “against” slavery.

3. States rights dealt with the idea that Southerners believed their states     should have MORE POWER to make decisions than the federal government.

Causes of the Civil War

Cause 3:  Preserving the Southern Way of Life

    1. Also related to the slave issue.

    2. Southerners believed their way of life was under attack and would         come to an end if the North continued to attack slavery.

Causes of the Civil War

Cause 4:  Slavery 1. The root of all the problems was the institution of slavery.

2. The use of slavery was renewed by the invention of the Cotton Gin by     Eli Whitney.

3. Slavery was very important to the South and Southerner’s were     going to do anything they could to protect it.

Issues With Slavery

a. In the 1850’s, only 1/3 of the population of the U.S. lived in the South     and that number was shrinking.

b. The industrial North was attracting scores of immigrants

c. The South had lost control of the House of Representatives because     of the growing Northern population.

d. The South became more focused on maintaining parity in the Senate.

e. The South was worried that an amendment would be made to abolish slavery.

f.  This led to many conflicts between the South and North over slavery and states rights.

g. The final straw was the election of Abraham Lincoln as the new President of the United    States.  This led the Southern states to secede, led by South Carolina, from the Union     and form the Confederate States of America.
