73 ) 3¢ orange brown, type I (10). Position 70L1E with interpane margin at right and large margins left &bottom just in at top, rich, early color; cancelled by red grid on cover to Redding Ct. matching red Jul 1 Amenia,N.Y. cds, which makes this, in all probability, a First Day cover; clean and Very Fine. (Catalogue value as a firstday cover $12,500). Sold on its own merits (Photo). Estimate 1,000 - 1,500

Expertization: with 2002 A.P.S. certificate specifying the date of use as 7/1/(1851).

There is no indication of year date anywhere on the cover, but the fact that the stamp is from the early state ofplate 1 apparently was sufficient evidence for the A.P.S. to render its ruling. The cover is accompanied by aletter from the late Wilson Hulme stating that he is quite convinced it is a first day cover, and he was sorry hehad not been aware of this piece, or he would have included it in his then about to be published article on thefirst day covers of the 3¢ 1851 issue.

74 ) 3¢ dull red, type I, with private “sawtooth” perforations (11). Estimate 2,000 - 3,000

Expertization: with 2002 A.P.S. certificate noting “sawtooth separations of unknown origin”, a letter fromthe late Wilson Hulme stating that in his opinion it is genuine also accompanies.

This is quite possibly the same perforation as that noted by Wilson Hulme as used from Kensington Pa., asuburb of Philadelphia.

QUITE AN ATTRACTIVE EXAMPLE OF THIS STORIED COIL.

Expertization: with 1981 P.F. certificate.

This 3¢ coil was produced specifically to be used by the Bell Pharmaceutical Company of Orangeburg, N.Y. tomail samples to doctors across the county. The 3¢ stamps paid triple the fourth class mail rate indicating thatthe samples were quite bulky. In addition, the volume of the mass mailing resulted in the covers being putthrough the first class cancelling machine rather than being hand cancelled, as was custom. These twocircumstances account for the fact that most of the surviving examples and virtually all of the known covers are affected by wrinkles, creases, or worse.
