DATES TO REMEMBER

PRINCIPALS REPORT

TEACHING AND LEARNIING AT

RHPS

I have spent the beginning of

Thursday in the grade 6

classrooms. Being in

classrooms is such a pleasing

way to begin the day and

reminds me of why we do what

we do at RHPS. Staff are

continuously learning,

challenging their practices and

ensuring they are using data to

inform their teaching. I was so

pleased to see how students in

the grades I visited today were

applying their learning and

challenging themselves and

their peers to participate and

contribute at a very informed

level. At RHPS we know the

importance of developing oral

language, critical and creative

thinking skills and extending

students’ vocabulary.

At present, classes across the

school are concentrating on

ensuring academic vocabulary is

explicitly taught and students

are becoming skilled at adding

to their peers thoughts or

respectfully challenging their

points of view. Developing oral

language and complex thinking

strategies allows reading

pathways to be developed

within the brain. When students

are given opportunities to

contribute to classroom

dialogue in extended and varied

ways, they can explore the

limits of their own understand-

ing. At the same time they

practice new ways of using

language as a tool for

constructing knowledge.

By engaging students in

dialogue, teachers can:

- explain ideas

- clarify the point and purpose

of activities

- 'model' scientific ways of using

language

- help students grasp new,

scientific ways of describing

phenomena.

STATEWIDE LEADERSHIIP

CONFERENCE

Last week Alex, Pat, Hung, Matt

and I attended the Statewide

Leadership Conference

organised by DET (Department

of Education and Training). We

ensured the days we attended

were directly aligned to our

roles within the school and our

Strategic Plan. We were all

involved in attending sessions

delivered by experts from

across the world. It was

extremely affirming to hear

from these experts that our

direction at RHPS is on point in

preparing our students to be

well equipped, global citizens.

As mentioned above, the

emphasis we place on

developing students’ oral

language and creative and

critical thinking skills was

highlighted by the experts when

discussing student voice and

agency, improved student

outcomes and accessing

opportunities.

STUDENT LEADER BREAKFAST

I had the pleasure of having

breakfast with our School

Captains, Biannca Greer and

Aidin Murica this morning

before school. I enjoy hearing

the students’ thoughts, ideas

and suggestions for RHPS. This

breakfast ritual also provides

me with an opportunity to note

the leadership capabilities of

our school leaders and how

they apply these to their role

within the school. A credit to

all!

STORY TIME

On Wednesday, our staff, Lauren Bird (Foundation Leader), Adrianna Galioto (Speech Pathologist) along

with support from Salwa and Tamara (our Multicultural Education Support Staff) conducted the first of our

Story Time sessions held in our 21C space. This initiative will be held every Wednesday afternoon and is for

parents and their pre-schoolers. The aim of this initiative is to be interactive and highlight the importance of

reading to children and talking and listening to them. Well done to those involved.

See further information in this Newsletter.

CURRICULUM DAY TERM 3

Our next Curriculum Day will be held on Monday July 17th, the first day of Term 3.This will be a pupil free

day which provides an opportunity for staff to participate in Professional Learning. We will be involved in

Cultural understanding training for the morning and will have Dr Julie Hamston continue her work with us

centred round integrating a Dialogic Approach in building language for learning across the curriculum. We

look forward to furthering our knowledge and practice from participating on the day.

Please see flyer below as Big Childcare will be available for those who require their service on our

Curriculum Day.

Yours in learning,

My child and technology

Watching TV:

When watching TV:

Ensure that your child is watching a high quality show that is

educational and suitable for their age.

Make sure that they can understand what is going on in the episode.

Ensure that they can take away valuable information or experiences from the show.

If your child can’t understand what they are watching, this can potentially reduce your child’s ability to pay attention and

solve problems (Common Sense Media, 2013).

This website reviews many TV shows and apps to identify what may be suitable for your child:

www.commonsensemedia.org

Share screen time: Research shows that by sharing screen time with an adult, children can learn more from it (Lerner and Barr, 2015).

When your child is watching a screen, talk with them. Ask them to describe what they are seeing and what

they are enjoying.

Draw from your child’s knowledge and past experiences when

watching a show.

For example, if there is a dog in the show, talk about your dog at

home.

When using a tablet, use it together and talk about what they are

doing.

It’s hard to escape from computers, TVs, iPads and other computer technologies. Does this mean our children should

be using it to learn language?

It’s important to note that the best way for children to learn is by talking with others, playing hands on games and

exploring the world around them, NOT via computer screens.

Despite this, children spend increasing time on computers as they grow up.

Although you can use these strategies to help your child learn through the TV and from screens, it is important to note that

children learn best through real life experiences and interactions with people. Therefore, it is important to set a time limit

on how much screen time your child can have.

Premiers’ Reading Challenge update

The aim of the Premiers’ Reading Challenge is to promote and instil a love of reading in our students.

It’s not a competition but a challenge for each student to read more and to read more widely.

Roxburgh Homestead Primary School currently has 141 students registered for the challenge.

Well done to the students who are currently taking part in the challenge and a big congratulations to the

17 students who have already met the challenge for 2019!

Challenge requirements:

There are more than 1200 titles on the challenge booklist! You can access these lists at the following website https://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/events/prc/Pages/booklist.aspx#link74. In order to meet the challenge students from F-2 need to read or experience 30 books during this period.

Students from 3-6 must read 15 books during this period.

The challenge will run until the 6th of September so keep entering your books up until this time using the website https://www.eduweb.vic.gov.au/Challenger/WebLogin.aspx.

It’s not too late to register!

Spare forms are in the office along with a helpful guide on reading with your children. You can access this

guide via our school website, on the external links section called Literacy and Numeracy Tips.

If you have any further questions regarding the Premiers’ Reading Challenge, please see your child’s

classroom teacher.
