VALIDATION ENGINEER I CO-OP Description: Title Validation Engineer I Co-Op, Technical Services Reports to: Sr. Process Engineer, Technical Services Location: ARIMF, Smithfield, RI Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is a biopharmaceutical company focused on serving patients with severe and ultra-rare disorders through the innovation, development and commercialization of life-transforming therapeutic products. Alexion is the global leader in complement inhibition, and has developed and markets Soliris® (eculizumab) as a treatment for patients with PNH and aHUS, two debilitating, ultra-rare and life-threatening disorders caused by chronic uncontrolled complement activation. Soliris is currently approved in more than 40 countries for the treatment of PNH, and in the United States and European Union for the treatment of aHUS. Alexion is evaluating other potential indications for Soliris and is pursuing development of other innovative biotechnology product candidates in early stages of development. Position Summary: The Validation Engineer performs validation studies required to support compliant cGMP commercial manufacturing in the plant. Principal Responsibilities • Responsible for executing validation studies. This includes protocol writing, field execution, data analysis, and report generation. This responsibility also requires coordination of studies with Manufacturing, Quality Control, Engineering, and Facilities. • Responsible for developing and executing commissioning documentation for new or modified process systems. This may include the development of user and function requirements, execution of factory/site acceptance testing, commissioning, and development of design qualifications • Serves as an information resource for validation studies performed by contractors or vendors. Qualifications: • Experience performing validation studies in cGMP biopharmaceutical environment is preferred. Experience in a monoclonal antibody manufacturing environment is preferred. • Must be able to analyze data using basic statistical methods. • Good interpersonal skills are required, as is the ability to communicate well, both verbally and written. Projects and tasks might include capturing significant occurrences during WaterFire lightings, assisting in various marketing projects utilizing video captured during the season, editing and post-production work on material for both internal and external sources, working with and organizing the WaterFire Media Library, and assisting in the program and project development. We provide academic credit for quality internship opportunities in nearly any field anywhere in the US
Students can choose to pursue an internship from our established placements or may design their own
Students may participate in paid and unpaid internships for academic credit
Student Requirements 2.5 GPA or higher
Minimum 60 credits prior to internship
Available free elective credit – student should meet with an academic advisor to confirm credits
Good academic and social standing
Important Dates Students should begin the internship search the semester before they plan to intern
Internships should be finalized two weeks before the semester begins
Hours and Credits Earn FREE ELECTIVE credits for ITR 302 (field experience) and ITR 304 (seminar)
Students earn PASS/FAIL credit for their field experience (3,6, 9, or 12 credits)
Students will enroll in a 3-credit seminar offered in class or online
Seminar focuses on the intern’s learning experience as well as professional and career development, making the connection between academic background and practical experience.
