The Middlesex High varsity girls basketball team survived a scare at Mathews on January 17, but pulled away for a 64-33 Tidewater District win. In a see-saw first half, Mathews jumped to a 5-1 start before Middlesex’s scoring machine got in gear and tallied 16 unanswered points for a 21-7 lead. Mathews (1-2, 8-5), however, battled back with 16 points in the second quarter. A basket at the half-time buzzer narrowed the Lady Chargers’ lead to 24-23, and Mathews took its momentum into the locker room. Middlesex head coach William Griffin got his team back on track with a “very motiva- tional talk” at halftime. “We were rushing in the second quarter and not playing our game, taking long shots and not driving to the basket,” said Griffin. “I told them. ‘If you play your game there is no way they can stay with you.’ “ The Middlesex defense slacked off as well in the first half, allowing 16 points in the second quarter. “We were not getting back in transi- tion and my girls were out of position for the rebound,” said Griffin. “In the second half we tightened up our defense and the press was working,” said Griffin. “Instead of rushing we were setting up our plays.” Middlesex allowed Mathews just 10 points in the third quarter and shut out the Lady Devils in the fourth quarter. “Katrina Reed and Amanda Brown took con- trol of the game in the fourth quarter and started making sure everything was set up and we were running our plays,” said Griffin. Griffin told his Lady Chargers they would not get the easy shot every time so they needed to bring it back to the top of the key and re-start the offense. Sherita Burse led Middlesex in scoring with 15 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Micah Reed had 12 points, and Amanda Brown added 12 points and delivered a pair of 3-pointers to get the Lady Chargers going early. Kiersten Baylor and Ashae Burnett each had 10 points. K. Reed had 3, and Kimberly Ammons added 2. Middlesex (3-0, 11-4) will host Tidewater District foe West Point tonight, January 24. “That will be a big game,” said Griffin. “I’m just glad we’re playing at home.” The Lady Chargers will only have one day of practice due to exams, noted Griffin. “I feel like we’ll be ready.” The JV game begins at 6 p.m. and the varsity game is at 7:30 p.m. www.ssentinel.com Serving Middlesex County and adjacent areas of the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck since 1896 Vol. 113, No. 42 Urbanna, Virginia 23175 January 24, 2008 B Section Youth Basketball see page B2 Wrestlers Win see page B2 Entering yesterday’s home game against top-ranked Benedictine, the Christchurch School boys basketball team had jumped to the number three position in the latest State Private School Division I Poll. The Middlesex High School wrestling team defeated Northumberland 39-30 in a match on January 16 at Middlesex.

The Chargers won eight individual matches. Linwood Cannon won the 103-pound division, and Mary Cannon won the 112-pound division with a pin in 1:27.

Cameron Wines continued to excel in the 119-pound class with a 9-7 victory; Chris Brooks won in the 130-pound class; and Conrad Maszack is back from an injury and won with a pin in only 54 seconds.

Charlie Wheeler won in the 140-pound class; Brian Insley pinned his opponent in 4:01

in the 145-pound class; and Jarred Palmer won the 160-pound class with a 49-second pin.

“The team did a great job and wrestled very tough,” said MHS coach Lee Anderson. “It was great to see Conrad wres-tle again because he is a great wrestler and brings energy to the team.”

The MHS coaches named Maszack and Mary Cannon as the team’s Wrestlers of the Week.

The Chargers (6-3) will travel to Sussex Central on January 26, and to King Wil-liam on Wednesday, February 6, to take on the Cavaliers and Franklin in a tri-match.

Middlesex High School boys basketball coach Neil Bailey was nominated and has been named a finalist in the Positive Coaching Alliance’s Annual “Double Goal” Coach Award.

Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) is a national nonprofit organization founded at Stan-ford University with the mis-sion to transform youth sports so sports can transform youth. PCA was created to transform the culture of youth sports to give all young athletes the opportunity for a positive, char-acter-building experience.

PCA has three national goals:

1. Replace the “win-at-all-cost” model of coaching with the “double-goal coach” who wants to win but has a second, more important, goal of using sports to teach life lessons.

2. Teach youth sports orga-nization leaders how to create an organizational culture in which “honoring the game” is the norm.

3. Spark and fuel a “social epidemic” of “positive coach-ing” that will sweep this coun-try.

There are many people in this nation who want to change the culture of youth sports, but they do not feel equipped to do so. Positive Coaching Alliance has developed practical tools to change the culture of youth sports and is making them avail-able to coaches, parents, league organizers and others who will fire this movement. For more information, visit www.posi-tivecoach.org.

Bailey was nominated by cur-rent parents, former players and assistant coaches. Comments about Bailey may be read and made at www.positivecoach.org/Blog.aspx.

Bailey is in his third season of coaching the MHS varsity and teaching civics at St. Clare Walker Middle School. In his first year at MHS in 2005-06, Bailey’s Chargers won both the Tidewater District regular season and tournament titles. Last year, the Chargers were the district tournament champions.

Nineteen coaches are finalists for the award. The winners will be announced in February and honored in April at Stanford University in California.

This event is sponsored by K. of C. Council 11210 in cooperation with the Middlesex County Department of Parks and Rec-reation and the Middlesex Youth Basketball League.

The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is an international event held annually in which boys and girls from 10-14 years of age compete in local level contests. Winners progress through dis-trict and state-level competi-tions. International champions are announced by the K. of C. International Headquarters on the basis of scores from state-level competitions. Normal

The Chargers had the Tigers down 17-1 in the first quarter. At halftime, the Middlesex

lead had slipped to 31-28. “We came out ready to play and got a lead, but let the other team back in it,” said Bailey. “Part of it was the fouls.”

The Chargers will host West Point on Friday. “West Point has size and athletes, so they are dangerous,” said Bailey.

“Friday is huge game,” said Bailey. “We have to win to stay near the front of the district standings and position our-selves for the regional tourna-ment.”

JV Chargers improve to 3-0 in district play

The Middlesex High School JV basketball team defeated King and Queen 49-35 on Jan-uary 15, and Mathews, 28-17 on January 18.

Against King and Queen, coach Jason Daniel said MHS got off to a slow start both offensively and defensively in the first quarter. “On defense we made too many mental mis-takes and got in early foul trou-ble. Matt Duke came off the bench and sparked the offen-sive scoring with six points,” he said.

In the second quarter, Cody Hunter found easy shots under the basket and Scott Payne rebounded well to give MHS a 27-13 lead at the half. In the third quarter, the defense kicked in and held the Royal Tigers to just three field goals.

King and Queen made a comeback in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to single digits, but Jeremiah Morris made some clutch four straight free throws to clinch the victory.

Hunter paced the Char-gers with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Payne con-tributed 13 points, 14 rebounds and 3 steals.

Duke had 6 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals; Kevin Walsh, 4 points, 2 rebounds and 1 steal; and Morris, 4 points and 2 rebounds.

John Walsh contributed 3 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals; Davonne Bryant, 2 points and 3 rebounds; Kris Baylor, 2 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists; and Shawn Lee, 1 point, 3 rebounds and 2 steals.

In the win over Mathews, Payne scored 8 points in the first quarter and Jasper Smith connected for a 3-pointer at the end of the quarter. “It was prob-ably the best game we played all year on both ends of the court,” said Daniel. “On offense we were patient and made good decisions. On defense, Shawn Lee and Davonne Bryant pro-vided great ball pressure and did a great job of running the offense.

“I think we are starting to play well as a team and under-stand what it takes to win as a team,” said Daniel.

The Middlesex Family YMCA has a full docket of programs scheduled for 2008.

With a primary focus on bolstering family programs, the YMCA has plans to intro-duce adult dodgeball, ballroom dancing, basketball, soccer, and a running club, in addition to the numerous youth-oriented programs.

The second adult dodgeball tournament will be on Friday, February 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. The fee is $10 per team. Last season, Rita Taylor’s tremen-dous team stood victorious with an 8-0 record and look to remain unbeaten this year. During the double-elimination tournament, teams will play the best 2 out of 3 games.

On Tuesday, February 12, Miracle Gordon will be instructing ballroom danc-ing. This class is intended for beginners and students that just want to go out and have a great time doing things like the Foxtrot and the Tango. The class will run for six weeks and will end with a formal dance. The cost of the program is $35 for members and $50 for non-members.

The Middlesex Family YMCA is back and ready for another action-packed spring as the youth soccer league kicks off. The program will be

divided into ages 3-5, 6-8, 9-11, and 12-15. Players that play for the high school JV or varsity teams will not be eligible to play for the YMCA. This year the league will begin two weeks earlier to ensure that it is over prior to season-opening Little League ceremonies. This year games will begin on March 1, and all teams will play a mini-mum of 8 games (10 games will be scheduled weather per-mitting), and the 9-11 and 12-15 divisions will be involved with the YMCA soccer tourna-ment. The cost for the program is $20 for members and $40 for non-members.

The YMCA has a Guardian Scholarship fund so please do not let price be the reason one does not participate.

The YMCA cheerleading program has been cheering at the JV basketball games. If you have not been able to see them in action join us on Friday, January 25, Tuesday, February 5, or Thursday, February 14. The girls help get the crowd going for at least two quarters and will perform the halftime show on Thursday, February 14. Bring lots of roses.

As with any question or concern about the Middlesex Family YMCA, please contact our front desk at (804)776-8846.

On January 15, students from Rappahannock Community College traveled to a session of the General Assembly in Rich-mond, where they spoke with delegates Harvey Morgan and Chris Peace of Virginia’s 98th and 97th districts, respectively, and state senator Richard Stuart of the 28th District.

Those attending were Car-dinel Butler of Richmond County; Daniel Mosco and Joseph Stallings, both of Northumberland County; Reva Tuck of Essex County; and Anne Wilkins of Westmore-land County. Two years ago Paul had to step down and Mr. White, as vice chairman, took over the duties of the chair. Last year we elected Macey to finish out Mr. Benneche’s term and this year we unanimously elected him to serve a full term. said Paden. “The students do a wonderful job communicat-ing the crucial role that RCC and all of Virginia’s commu-nity colleges play in our state’s higher education system.”

Students from all over the state observe the legislature’s Community College Days every year by taking part in these trips. The purpose, as well as promoting the legis-lative goals of the VCCS, is to remind legislators of the importance of Virginia’s com-munity colleges in providing for the critical needs of the Commonwealth and its citi-zens.

Notices Noticesmaritime museumby Nature Girl

and Kaptain Krunch“In the Park” on Saturday,

February 2, will feature the Middlesex Master Gardeners Pruning Clinic. Pruning trees and shrubs will be discussed and demonstrated. If you are a hands-on “I got to see how it’s done” type of gardener, then this program is made for you. Look for details in a sepa-rate article in today’s and next week’s Sentinel.

February 27 will be the offi-cial meeting of the Gardenerds for 2008. We are hoping there are more people like us out there, and you’ll step forward and join in on the fun and the future of Holly Point. Sounds rather ominous! And, if you don’t believe me, here’s a tes-timonial, “I have learned so much from my fellow nerds over the last five years.”

Okay, sounds a little canned. Guess I’ve been watching too many political debates! So as winter hopefully kills the bugs and germs, we are busy plan-ning activities for the spring. If you have something of interest, give us a call at 776-7200.

So what’s up Krunch . . .Alert readers will recall

that when we left the Merry Museum Prankers in Death March 2008, the “F.D. Crock-ett” was still in Jackson Creek.

This week our gunnery offi-cer, Wes, a self-admitted slow learner, returned for more abuse as our tow boat.

Anti-climactically, we towed around the cape (Stove Point) to Chesapeake Marine Railway (old Deagle’s) and the bilge pump never even came on. The railway guys greeted us with a car in position, so up we went without a hitch. Now the reality of stern replacement is

upon us. “Boy Howdy,” as my dear old mother used to say. Come down and check us out. The “Crockett” is on the west-ern most railway, nearest Ed’s house. And bring your check-book. We’ve got some nifty name boards, renderings, and half models ready for contribu-tors—all tax-deductible by the way.

The “Explorer” crew went to the little, big city (Richmond) to attend a celebration marking the end of the Jamestown 400th anniversary.

We are off to the Lions Club this week at The Beacon. Thankfully for dinner, not breakfast. The topic is boat-building, Deltaville style. In preparing a shore biography, I noticed that I built my first boat 50 years ago—and I felt old before!

Anyway, my role as cheer-leader at the museum is well researched—a misspent youth followed by a wasted adult-hood.

We’ll convene at the “F.D. Crockett” on Sunday. Come by. It’s definitely worth a look.

Above, Deltaville Maritime Museum official Kaptain Krunch talks to two mem-bers of the Virginia Library Association at the “Explorer” display at the Library of Vir-ginia Legislative reception in Richmond on January 17.

Three Rivers Health District Director Thomas Irungu, MD, MPH, has announced that his district still has flu vaccine available and encourages those who have not yet received their flu shot for this flu season to do so. People desiring to get the shot can contact their local health department (758-2381).

The cost of the vaccine is $30. Medicare will cover the cost. Also available are lim-ited supplies of pediatric vac-cine and VFC vaccine, which are free to children under 19 who are enrolled in Medicaid or have no health insurance, or are American Indian or Alas-kan Native.
