Web Design:5 Myths Exposed

o A great website isn’t just about the design. it’s about the entire package. This includes the way it looks and the content that it provides, but most importantly, it should be about the user experience

o You need to discover what your audience wants and then provide them with it. This doesn’t mean that you should ignore everything else, but the design should play a big part in the functionality of the site

o If your design makes it difficult for your audience to find what they’re looking for, then it is not helping you build your business at all. Read on for our 5 web design myths exposed!

“It’s All About the Sales”o Even though the end result of your website may be to drive

more sales, it is also very important that the website doesn’t feel like a “Sales funnel”

o Remember, not all of your visitors are going to end up

buying from you. Therefore, having a site that’s filled with too many Call to Actions and huge buttons won’t do you any favours

o It is important to consider that each of your visitors will be

coming to your site for a different reason, so make sure that your design provides them with the different services that they need

“Super Cool Features!”o There is always going to be something new and “cool” that

is released, promising to be the “next big thing”

o However, more often than not, this feature ends up becoming unloved and underused, such as QR codes

o If you have a QR code on your desktop site, it should direct users to one of your offers or to your mobile site, not just to another version of the same site

o This also applies for widgets that direct users to your Social

Networks. Only use these features if they’re necessary. Don’t just use them to fill up some of the space in your sidebar

“I Can Get a Great, Free Website!”o It is possible for you to get a great free website, however

the quality is usually lacking, especially in terms of design o Quite often they will be formulaic, bland and each one

looks very similar to the next, bar a few colour changes o You would definitely be better off investing your money in a

website that is specifically designed to cater to your audience

o This may require more than your “basic site” – you may

want to add images and videos, as well as context your site in order to provide your users with your brand story

o In the long run, you’ll be pleased that you decided to make

the investment

“I Don’t Really Need a Mobile Site”

o Yes, you most definitely DO need a mobile site! o Mobile and tablet sites account for up to 50% of all internet

traffic. This means that if you don’t have a site that’s optimised for mobile devices, you could be missing out on a large amount of potential customers

o Instead of just “mobilising” your desktop site, design a

separate mobile site that has everything that your user will need, such as easier navigation on a smaller screen

o Lose all of the unnecessary stuff and provide a link back to

the desktop site. This will be helpful if your users want to access something that isn’t available on the mobile version of your website
