TO THE DIRECTOR

This piece features a driving 3/4 funk groove, along with contemporarychord progressions and suspended harmonies that dominate therhythm parts. The solo section at measure 94 is offered for tenor saxo-phone or trumpet (written or ad lib), but can easily be assigned to othersoloists. Everyone has interesting and challenging parts to play and fre-quent articulations are provided.

The rhythm parts are an integral part of the piece. The drummer shouldplay a very simple, deliberate pattern with a heavy emphasis on thesnare hits on beat 3. The rhythm section is advised to use the writtenparts when offered since they work quite well as notated.

Avoid playing this faster than the suggested metronome marking so asnot to compromise the effectiveness and playability of the figures. Andas always, faithfully observing all articulations and dynamic markingswill ensure a crisp, spirited performance. This is especially importantwhen negotiating 16th note subdivisions idiomatic to the funk style.

Mr. Jarvis serves as Director of Jazz Studies at the Bob Cole Conservatory atCalifornia State University Long Beach. He maintains an ambitious internationalitinerary as a Yamaha trumpet artist, honors jazz band conductor, and clinician.Jeff’s early career as a studio trumpeter encompasses over 100 recordings forsuch names as Lou Rawls, Michael Jackson, Melba Moore, and The O’Jays, fol-lowed by numerous solo recordings.
