History of the JIC Protocol

establishing local Joint Information System and Centers

Helps RDSTFs know how to provide support to local jurisdictions.

Training followed through series of conferences

Recent workshops designed to illicit feedback on need for an update

Statewide Workshops Jan-Mar 2009 Conducted workshops in

Tallahassee, Orlando, Ft. Lauderdale Fire Rescue East

Discussion prompted through tabletop exercise Intent

Evaluate PIO knowledge and use of the Protocol Obtain information about local PIO capabilities and

needs

Received input from more than 150 PIOs

What We Learned

information centers due to their failure to stay ahead of the “news”

Is contributing to the rapid decline in print media and changes to broadcast media

Growth of social media is staggering

Challenges for Joint Information Centers (JIC) Policies, procedures and practices are out-

of-date Learning curve is steep and training is

hard to “buy” in today’s economy Government lags behind and industry in

understanding the necessity to tap into and exploit social media

Going Digital

Whose website do we use? Will the site stand up to the traffic? How do we quickly get up-to-date information? How can we be fast enough to be relevant? How do we include those who cannot be physically present? How do we get fast IC approvals? How do we minimize the incoming phone calls? How do we make sure critical audiences receive the

messages?

Going Digital

How do we as a team manage the flood of inquiries? How do we make certain all critical stakeholders receive timely information? How do we manage activities for speed and quality? How do we monitor what the media, blogs, and community is saying? How do we document everything? How do we know who is who in the response and how to contact them?
