Section 1 Purple Line Extension ConstructionUpdates
Progresses Above and Below
While the upcoming relaunch of the tunnel boring machines (TBMs) remains thebiggest news for this month, progress on Section 1 of the Purple Line ExtensionProject continues above and below Wilshire Bl.
The design-builder’s excavation of the Wilshire/La Cienega Station has reached thebottom of the station box. The next major step for the western most Section 1station is pouring the temporary concrete floor. The temporary floor, commonlynamed the “mud mat,” is required for arrival of the TBMs after their journey fromthe Wilshire/Fairfax Station.

Workers continue to place the high-density polyethylene (HDPE) along theunfinished Fairfax Station walls. Workers wrap each of the Section 1 stations inHDPE to create a barrier between the stations and water and gas in thesurrounding soil.
Reassembly of the twin TBMs, better known as Soyeon and Elsie, is anticipated tobe complete early this month. Pushing off against temporary steel structures—referred to as “thrust frames”—each TBM will begin boring her way west to theWilshire/Fairfax Station. As the TBMs progress by pushing themselves forward—they have no other means of propulsion—workers had to assemble thesestructures.

Their voyage from the Wilshire/La Brea Station to the Wilshire/Fairfax Station willbe much shorter than the tunnels they have already completed. The distancebetween the Wilshire/La Brea and Wilshire/Fairfax stations is less than half thedistance (only .8 miles) they excavated from the Wilshire/La Brea Station to theWilshire/Western TBM Retrieval Shaft.
Above ground, technicians within the K-rail installation east of the McCarthy Vistaand Wilshire Bl intersection continue to sample and eliminate gases from thisunique underground location. This investigation and analysis precede the arrival ofthe TBMs in early 2020.

Starting early October, twenty trees along Wilshire Bl and on adjacent streetswithin the work area will be removed. These trees are expected to be replacedafter the completion of major construction in 2022. Some street lights and trafficsignals will also be temporarily moved or replaced due to location conflicts withpiling operations. This work will take place, Monday through Friday, from 8:15pmto 7am. Lane closures on Wilshire Bl and adjacent streets will be required for thiswork with two lanes maintained eastbound and westbound on Wilshire Bl duringdaytime hours and one lane maintained in both directions during weeknights.

Preparation for piling on the north side of Wilshire Bl is anticipated to continuethis month. Residents and stakeholders can expect to see K-rail barriers onWilshire Bl to reconfigure the street to two lanes in each direction betweenBeverly Dr and Crescent Dr. The K-rail will be in place 24 hours a day, 7 days aweek through the completion of this work.
The City of Beverly Hills Council did not approve Metro’s request to continue pilingduring the holiday moratorium period from Thanksgiving Day through January 2,2020. Thus, any work related to the subway project will only occur within thestaging yards during the holiday period.

Current excavation progress for the Tunnel Boring Machine Launch Box in Century City.
The relocation of the water line in Century City east of Avenue of the Stars andunderneath Constellation Bl (to the west edge of the current closure to Solar Way)is expected to begin on October 14 and continue through February 2020. Workhours are Monday through Friday, 8pm to 6am and Saturday, 8pm to 10am. Onelane will be maintained from the Century Park driveway to Avenue of the Stars.Craft valet on Constellation Bl will remain accessible from Avenue of the Stars.
The excavation to support the launch of the tunnel boring machines (TBMs) withinthe Constellation Bl Closure is a little over 75 feet deep. Before tunneling canbegin, the launch box must be reach a depth of 100 feet. The first TBM isanticipated to launch by the end of 2019. It will take approximately 3 months forthe TBMs to dig from the launch box to the staging yard on Century Park East.Work hours are Monday through Saturday, 6am to 4:30pm and 7pm to 5am.

UCLA Westwood Village Block Party On Sunday, September 22, the Community Relations Team for the Purple LineExtension welcomed new students at the UCLA Westwood Block Party. Along withseveral other vendors, Metro sponsored a prize booth to engage students andpromote the future Westwood/UCLA Station. With over 10,000 in attendance, theevent was a high-energy night. Students received Eat Shop Play Metro TAP cards,tote bags and other fun gifts. While many of them hope to graduate before thestation opens in 2027, they were excited to have an easier way to come back andvisit campus.
