Hot Topic … Momo Challenge

FRIDAY 8 MARCH 2019

Netsafe has received reports relating to young people who have been exposed to a harmful online “game” known as the Momo Challenge. Although we have not received any reports of young people in New Zealand taking part in the “challenge”, we are aware that some young people have seen content relating to Momo and have been very upset by the content and imagery. There has also been talk about whether this “challenge” is real or a hoax. Regardless of whether the actual challenge itself exists, individuals who come across Momo related content may experience emotional distress at seeing it – particularly younger children.

Netsafe encourages anyone that comes across content relating to the Momo Challenge or other similar ‘challenge’ content to immediately report it to the social media site or website that it’s on. In New Zealand, it is against the law to incite another person to take their own life. If somebody is targeting a young person to play this “game”, or attempting to incite suicide, you should contact the Police and Netsafe for help, and a mental health service for support. Netsafe can also provide advice for any parents who are concerned about this challenge. If young people are expressing feelings about self-harm or suicide then this should be followed up with appropriate mental health support.

Netsafe’s advice for parents about exposure to upsetting content:

Have a conversation with young people about what to do if they do come across upsetting content online

Let your child know that they can come to you when they find something upsetting and they won’t get in trouble

Stay calm if they do come to you – don’t assign blame, reassure them that it’s not their fault and don’t punish them for seeking help

Normalise their feelings – let them know that it is normal to feel scared, confused or upset

Don’t over-react by taking away the technology – this may make them less likely to talk to you if something else happens

For young children in particular, consider using parental controls to block out specific keywords like “Momo”

If you or your child comes across this type of content report it to the platform that it’s on

If your child is expressing any concerning feelings, follow up with mental health support

If you know that a young person has been engaging in this challenge, report it to the Police and Netsafe, and contact a mental health service for support.

On Friday 1 March we welcomed a

group of Japanese students, who are visiting our school until Tuesday 12 March. They are studying in our Y7 and 8 area. We had a lovely cultural exchange of waiata and kapahaka and the Japanese students shared their beautiful school song with us.

Y5/6 T-Ball Tournament

On Tuesday this week, a team of ten very lucky Year 5 - 6 students got to visit the Rosedale Softball Park in Albany and compete in the Norwest T-Ball

tournament. The team trained hard with Miss P, Kim and Mr Brake practising their catching, batting and sprinting to first base. The team worked really well together and remembered the tips from Miss P to throw the ball to the first base as fast as possible. With this tactic in mind we won 4 out of 5 games. Oliver F., Y5 H4

Aquabots We are very fortunate to have Sarah from Beca Engineering working alongside some of our students this term. Sarah has her Masters in Mechatronics and had a great first session

helping our Aquabot students prepare for their trip to the World Championships in Washington DC from 1 June. Thanks Sarah and Beca Engineering for helping to carve career pathways for the next generation. Mr Hill

Fru Ju Iceblocks on sale every Wednesday lunchtime until the end of Term 1. $2.00 each.

Y7/8 NW Tag Tournament The NW Tag tournament on Thursday 21 February was a fun day. Both teams had trained hard and were ready for the day ahead. Our Y7/8 Girls team did well; winning three out of four of their pool games. Our boys were in a tough pool but they won one, drew one and lost two. There was a great feeling within both teams. The more experienced players supported the newbies and everybody demonstrated great sportsmanship. Ms Dassler

Y7/8 Softball Tournament Thursday 7 March was a very busy day for the Year 7/8 Softball team. We had four games, one after the other. We ended up with a record of 2 wins, 2 losses, with all of them being close games. Every member of the team worked hard to put all the things they had learnt in practice into the games. Special thanks to Darryl for coaching the team and giving them an in-depth understanding of the game. Miss Porteous

Community Notices

It was a beautiful morning on Sunday 3 March and many people were out and about to grab a bargain at our first Car Boot Sale, or a car wash at the AIMS Car Wash.

The Car Boot Sale raised $735 and our great team of parents are working hard on ideas to make this bigger and better for next time.

Hobby’s Whanau and Friends sell Fru Ju ice iceblocks at $2.00 each, every Wednesday lunch time until the end of term . To date they have raised $258.

Hobby’s Whanau and Friends will hold their next meeting on Tuesday 12 March from 2.00pm to 3.00pm in the Staff Room. Please come along with your ideas and help our fundraising group.

We need new members urgently!

Community Evening—Thursday 28 February

Wow, what a great picnic evening! It was an amazing opportunity to strengthen relationships between students, teachers and parents.

The AIMS car wash on Sunday was a great success. The students put in some really hard work and ended up cooling off in the pool afterwards. $250 raised will go towards our AIMS Games sports teams, who will compete in Tauranga 8 to 13 September. Thanks Hobby community for your support. Mr Hill

Ocean Explorer Visit—Wednesday 27 February—We had an awesome morning as the entire school were lucky enough to listen to underwater cameraman , Steve Hathaway, share his love of the ocean around NZ waters. Steve's footage has been used for many BBC series, as well as Blue Planet ll. Please ask your child about some key messages Steve shared with us. One big goal is to reduce our plastic at Hobsonville School to 0%. We learnt today that a lot of our school rubbish ends up in our drains that end up in our ocean. Please support Steve's love of the ocean and have a look at their website www.youngoceanexplorers.com
