Send a car buying question to Car Buyers Helpline Manager Dave Pearson. E-mail your question to [email protected] with the subject, “Ask Dave.”

Car manufacturers commonly offer rebates and other incentives to boost vehicle sales. These often include special financing rates or rebates. Many times, you must choose to take one or the other. One common offer is a choice between a cash rebate or 0% financing for credit-qualified buyers. Car Buyers Helpline can help break down these offers and help you choose the path that will save you the most money. We’ll ask the right questions. For some buyers, a 0% offer is less advantageous than taking the cash rebate. For instance, if you plan to trade the car in after a few years, you may lose the advantage of 0%.

Also, taking the cash rebate can immediately place you in a better equity position on your vehicle. Let us help you break down the incentives and make the right choice. Feel free to contact us with any of your questions.

PRESIDENT/CEO’S MESSAGE

By Paula A. Stopera

As the summer season begins, the Capital Region economy seems to be gaining fresh momentum from steadily increasing home sales and new high-tech job opportunities. At Capital Communications, we are also experiencing a jolt of fresh momentum. We have an array of new insurance and home loan options including our new and enhanced mortgage lending options. We recently formalized a partnership with MorPAC/Advantage (Mortgage Processing Assistance Center, Inc.), headquartered in Albany, and launched a series of special member insurance offers from Travelers Insurance Company and VantisLife.® We have added these products and services to help members improve their financial well-being. As a first step toward that brighter future, consider an appointment for a

quick Financial Checkup with us. In just a few minutes, we can help you uncover financial options that can save you money. We’ll make sure you are doing everything you can to reduce your debt, enhance your financial position and obtain peace of mind. Call us or stop by a branch today. One member who recently came in for a simple college loan withdrawal on behalf of his son walked out with a “life-changing” Home Loan. Mike McGarry, of Gansevoort, asked about a low-rate Home Loan and

later sat down with Branch Representative Rachael Smigelski to discuss his options. The conversation resulted in Mike saving about $700 per month – by replacing his mortgage with our new 30-year, adjustable-rate Home Loan. After the meeting, Mike wondered if he might retire five years sooner and said to Rachael, “This is life changing.” Mike called the loan closing process the “easiest and most straightforward” he’s ever witnessed. Stories like this one, found on Page 6, are the essence of Capital Communications. It shows our top-notch service and unique listening ability. When Mike visited our Latham Branch, he was seeking a simple loan withdrawal. But Rachael listened closely and was able to offer a comprehensive financial solution. We are people helping people and we are committed to improving the financial standing of our members. I can say with unwavering confidence that, no matter what type of financial move you are considering, a visit to Capital Communications is the most prudent first step. We’ll map out the best strategy for you and help you get it done!

Sincerely,

Paula A. StoperaPresident/CEO

young volunteersCelebrating

The awards, now in their 12th year, are given annually in March based on nominations from parents, teachers and friends. Winners are given an 18-month Credit Union CertifiKID, which is a certificate designed to demonstrate the value of savings. “The volunteer work done by these teenagers is inspiring and Capital Communications is honored to support this

work. Their words remind us how much there is to be gained from volunteering,” said President/CEO Paula A. Stopera. To submit a nomination for next year’s awards, contact Public Relations Administrator Carie Sala at (518) 458-2195 ext. 3671 or [email protected].

The Credit Union’s Making a Difference Awards are given each year to local middle and high school students who show outstanding commitment to community service and volunteering. The awards celebrate teen members who embody the credit union philosophy of “people helping people.”

FIRST PLACE Every act counts

Niskayuna High School ninth grader Elyse Wohl was awarded a $1,000 CertifiKID for volunteering at organizations like Sunnyview Rehabilitation Center and the Schenectady Inner City Ministries.

At Sunnyview, Elyse helps meet the needs of disabled patients. With the Inner City Ministries, she works with outreach programs and teaches children to read. “Everyone, no matter how young they are, can change the world. Every little act impacts someone. Maybe I will inspire younger kids to volunteer and maybe they will make the world a better place,” Elyse said.

SECOND PLACE Giving back

Luke Anapolis, a senior at Niskayuna High School, was awarded a $500 CertifiKID prize for volunteer work at places like the Schenectady Museum, where he raised money for a solar and wind power exhibit.

He has also worked with the Special Olympics and is vice president of his high school class. “We are fortunate to live in a great community, and I think it’s important for everyone to give back. For me, volunteering is not about building my resumé, it’s about how it makes you feel, how it changes your life,” Luke said.

THIRD PLACE* Learning from gratitude

Garrett Rappazzo is a senior at the LaSalle Institute in Troy and was awarded a $300 CertifiKID for projects including a school supply collection effort for a school in Nigeria. For that project, he partnered

with the Association of Nigerians of the Capital District. Garrett has also worked with the Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County, where his service has included guided tours of local libraries for low-income students. “I like to help people who are not as fortunate. I like to see a look of appreciation and gratitude on other people’s faces. I benefit from the happiness I see in their eyes,” Garrett said.

THIRD PLACE*Doing more for others

Shaker High School’s Andrew Olsen was awarded a $300 CertifiKID for his work at the Eden Park Nursing Home, the Regional Food Bank and Gilda’s Club.

At Gilda’s Club, the high school junior spent time with 9-year-old Ben Stowell, who eventually lost a battle with cancer. The pair became friends during Andrew’s volunteer service. “I think more teenagers should volunteer. Working with Ben at Gilda’s Club taught me that I needed to do more for other people before I think of myself,” Andrew said.

*The third place award was shared.

Mike McGarry recently dropped by the Latham Branch to take a $50 advance from his son’s Academic Advantage loan. He left the branch a short time later with a “life-changing” loan. After making the withdrawal, Mike asked about our new, adjustable-rate 30-year Home Loan. That led to a meeting with Branch Representative Rachael Smigelski and a mortgage consolidation plan that is now saving him $700 per month. “Everything that CAP COM promised me, right down to the dollar, happened as they said it would,” Mike said. “This was a life-changing loan. I can honestly say it was the easiest and most straightforward loan process I’ve ever been through.” Mike, who owns a home in Gansevoort and works for Johnson Controls, took out a 30-year Home Loan and paid off two other mortgages with higher interest rates.

“From approval to closing, the CAP COM loan process was fast and easy compared with other lenders I’ve used,” Mike said. For mortgage consolidation, making home improvements or paying off debt, the Capital Communications Home Loan program is a smart first step. Contact our Lending Team at (518) 458-2195 or visit capcomfcu.org to check our rates on loans with terms ranging from five to 30 years. For Debbie Barnes, of Brunswick, our 30-year Home Loan delivered a $160 monthly savings. Debbie is an independent hair stylist who works at Lacadar’s near the North Greenbush Branch. “The bank where I had my mortgage was bought out by a bank in Spain. I wanted to keep my business local,” Debbie said. “I have my business account with CAP COM, as well as my Checking Account and VISA® Credit Card. I have been very satisfied with everything about the Credit Union.”

FoundationCapital Communications Cares Art Goedeke

Memorial Scholarship

The 2009 Art Goedeke Memorial Scholarship was presented to Niskayuna High School senior Andrew Chan during the Credit Union’s Annual Meeting on March 24. Andrew plans to pursue a degree in computer science at St. Lawrence University. Applicants were asked to write an essay about how popular social network sites like Facebook might change the way people interact. Andrew’s essay argued that social networking sites will enable groups to quickly rally around political issues and, in turn, hold elected leaders to higher standards. “In the future, Facebook and sites like it will not only be a site for socializing, but also a site for political awareness,” Andrew wrote. The $2,000 scholarship is a gift from the family of Art Goedeke Jr., a longtime Credit Union member and volunteer who had a passion for computer sciences.

Scholarship winner Andrew Chan stands with Arthur Goedeke III and his wife, Debby.

During the Credit Union’s annual Take Your Child to Work Day, children helped assemble care packages for soldiers serving overseas. The Foundation sends off packages twice a year as part of its Support Our Soldiers program. The packages contain items like board games, coffee, CDs, DVDs, magazines and snack items. “Our hope is to make the days a little brighter for our soldiers serving in places like Iraq and Afghanistan,” said event coordinator Carie Sala. To nominate a soldier for a care package, contact Carie at (518) 458-2195 ext. 3671 or send an e-mail to [email protected].

This year Seton Health is celebrating 160 years of service to the Capital Region community. Since 1850, the spirit of caring and giving has been the cornerstones of Seton Health and St. Mary’s Hospital. In 1981, the Seton Health Foundation was established to carry on that spirit and bring the best health care to our community. The Foundation helps fund state-of-the-art technology,

new facilities and an array of innovative programs and services, such as the Rensselaer Cares Prescription Assistance Program.

In 2009 the program provided free prescription drugs to more than 280 families. The Capital Communications Cares Foundation helps support Seton Health’s prescription drug program and shares the goal of bringing the spirit of caring and giving to Capital Region communities. The Seton Health Foundation is supported by generous donors and led by a group of 20 trustees. Seton Health is a comprehensive, integrated Catholic health care system anchored by St. Mary’s Hospital in Troy. Seton Health believes that the finest in patient care requires a constant investment in programs, people, buildings and equipment.
