If you look at mass media and advertising, the culture of theUnited States appears to be one of youth. What is glamorous,innovative,andstimulating is focusedon theyoung. Theelderlyareoftendepictedasslow,sick,rigidandincompetent.Ageismisanissuethatshouldbeaddressedonaregularbasis.Mythsandstereotypesaboutagingaboundputtingusallatriskforacceptingthingsthatsimplyarenottrue.

Inherarticle“AnEssayonMythsandStereotypes,”NancyPeppardpointsoutsomeofthemythsabouttheelderly:

Myth #1:Theelderlyareinflexible;theyareresistanttochangeandunabletoadapttonewsituations.Reality: Throughouttheirlives,mostolderpeopleremainopentochangeas they facedramatic life adjustments suchas retirement,lossofspouseandfriends,andillnessanddisease.

AN INVITATION TO JOIN SOAR.SOARmembersinviteourNorthCountrypeerstojoinusinexercisingourminds,bodiesandspirits.

COURSES AND CLASS SESSIONS.SOARhastwoten-weeksemesters a year, one beginning the week after Labor Day inSeptemberandtheotherbeginningmid-March.OverhalfofourSOARclassesareheldontheSUNYPotsdamcampus,aboutafourthareheldinCanton,andtherestareheldatotherplacesinPotsdamorinthelocalarea.MostSOARcoursesare�to6classsessionslongandusuallymeetonceaweek,Monday-Friday,for�½to2hours.Coursesareheldduringdaylighthours.Occasionally,courses,fieldtrips or events occur on the weekends or in the evening. SOARmembersmustregisterforeachcoursetheywanttotake.Courserequestsarefilledintheorderreceived.Lateregistrationsaretakenonly for courses with openings. Permission from SOAR, and insomecasesfromtheinstructor,isneededtojoinacoursealreadyinprogress.Oneormorenewcoursesbegineachweekduringthesemester. Therefore,memberswhohavebusy schedulesorwhotravelcanstillfindsomeSOARcoursestotake.

MEMBERSHIP FEES AND PRIVILEGES. For their yearly $65 membership fee (paid in the fall), current members maytake as many courses as they like, in both the fall and springsemesters.Youmayjoin(orrejoin)SOARatanytime;however,themembershipfeeisstill$65(allmembershiprenewalsareduewith fall registration). Membership in SOAR includes a SUNYPotsdamparkingpass,aswellastheprivilegeofusingthelibraryandMaxcyHallsportscomplex.(NOTE: MembersmustbeactiveparticipantsintheSOARprograminordertoretaintheseprivileges.)SOARoccasionallyoffers day trips andother special events andopportunities throughout the year. At the end of each semesterSOARholdsaluncheonforitsmembersandguests.Luncheons,tripsandspecialeventsareoptionalandcostextra.

The Arab Spring as Told through Graffiti Gisele El Khoury 1 session, 1½ hours (SLU: Carnegie 10, Canton)TheArabSpringledtoanumberofregimechangesintheMiddleEast(Tunisia,Libya,Yemen,BahrainandEgypt)anddramaticshifts in thepoliticallandscapeacrosstheArabWorld.Inourmodernimage-sharingworld, it was no surprise that western newspapers were publishingpolitically relevant street art from across the region. During theArabSpring,artistssaycitywallswereoftentheonlyplaceswheretheycouldtalkbacktotyrants.Inthispresentation,wewillgooverthemaineventsthatshaped theArabSpringby lookingatsomeof themost importantgraffiti.
