This Update comes to you during our final days of preparation for a new school year. We hope that the summer of hot weather has provided you with the opportunity to rest and rejuvenate with your family and friends!

We are excited and thankful that you and your family have decided to be part of the Rockway school community this year. I believe that students who enter these walls and halls, embark into a place of learning, where faculty and staff are committed to forming faith and building character. It is a school that provides unique learning opportunities twinned with a community that helps students to develop new skills, encounter new thoughts and ideas, build their faith, and apply their understanding in innovative ways. As we launch into the year, Rockway faculty and staff look forward to mentoring your son/daughter as they become responsible, globally minded, compassionate and reflective learners – Rockway’s four pillars that extend Rockway’s core purpose.

When I accepted the call to become Principal of Rockway in January 2013, I committed myself to honor Rockway’s mission in my work, alongside the commitment to push Rockway forward in all areas of institutional structure. I celebrate the strong and positive relationship we have with the Ministry of Education, the development and ongoing refining of educational and behavioural policies, the launch of Inquiry-Based Learning and Program Evaluations for all program areas, a defined plan and strategy for sustainability called the “Lead Us Onward” campaign including facility enhancement, and the participating in Capacity Canada’s Board Goverance Boot Camp, providing Rockway’s Board with the tools they need to be “innovative decision-makers leading agile organizations that confidently try new ways of doing things.” I am deeply grateful for the collaborative efforts of Rockway’s Board, Faculty, Staff, Parents and Constituents who have contributed to all of these successes!

I am excited about 2017-2018 and the new things in store! Please ensure you read “Coming this Fall” for an overview of how Rockway will continue to move forward. As parents, it is very important you know you are part of the exciting journey we are on!

CHAPELS AT ROCKWAYRockway students, faculty and staff gather twice a week for chapels. These community gatherings give shape to the core of our school’s identity and mission to “form faith and build character.” Chapels create the opportunity for teachers, students, alumni and guests to reflect on their faith journeys, how they see the world, and their place in it.

This year’s Chapel theme, Trust for the Journey, was developed by our student worship team as a way to explore how faith connects to the daily lives of our students. Students tried to imagine how they saw God working in the midst of all these pressures and expectations. The image of the compass came to mind. Compasses give us direction, but they do not guide us every step of the way; they provide a rough outline of which way to turn in the wilderness, though miles of rocky crags, deep running rivers, and thick brush may lie ahead. The compass points the way to our destination, but it is up to us to walk the journey. The compass is not a free-pass or a solution to every problem, but it is constant. It holds course and keeps us from losing our way as we struggle on our journey. Teens are explorers and adventures. Throughout their time at Rockway, they are discovering the world and themselves, pushing the edges and clearing the way for new paths. Outdated ideas need to be challenged and explored by the generation of today. New trails may need to be blazed as we attempt to follow God’s path in a changing world. The compass gives us a lifeline, providing the direction onward. How we make that path will be up to us. We must take each step, and trust!

COMING THIS YEAR…This year we look forward to some new initiatives! Please note the following:

RENOVATIONOver the last two months, a huge renovation has taken place in Rockway’s basement and the Assembly Area. The basement includes reconfigured art spaces, more digital media spaces, new floors, ceilings, and large glass doors for a more open concept space. The Assembly Area has received a complete makeover – ceiling, floors, sound, and lighting….all of this to give students a better learning experience!Revitalizing our facilities is one of four priorities contained in Lead Us Onward, a road map to Rockway’s 75th anniversary in 2019-2020.Be sure to attend Rockway’s Family Welcome Night on September 14th, when you can walk through this newly renovated space!

BUSINESS PROGRAMTwo new courses will be launched this year: International Business Fundamentals (BBB4M) and Business Leadership: Management Fundamentals (BOH4M). Pam Fehr will be the Business Program Coordinator, working and consulting with Sheri Wideman who will teach both of the courses.

TEACHING RESILIENCE This year simple mindfulness strategies, self-awareness and emotional self-regulation will be woven throughout the curriculum and the daily life of the school. Students, administration, faculty, staff and parents will be encouraged to grow in resilience.

HOMESTAYRockway will return to managing its HomeStay program internally. HomeStay is an intentional way for our community to show its hospitality to our international students. In addition to her role as International Student Coordinator, Jill Sauer will manage the HomeStay program. If you, or anyone you know, are interested in being a part of this program, please connect with Jill Sauer at [email protected].

ELECTRONIC DEVICESStudents are not allowed to use their electronic devices in school chapels / assemblies, testing situations, change-rooms or washrooms within the school.

Students in Grades 9-12 may use their electronic devices in class if deemed appropriate by the teacher. This means that expectations for electronic device usage in classes will vary from teacher to teacher / class to class. Expectations for each class will be explained by the teacher at the start of each semester and reviewed from time to time throughout the semester.

If used inappropriately, these devices will be confiscated by the teacher and turned into the main office. The receptionist will inform the Assistant Principal of the situation. Students may pick up their cell phone at the end of the day, following a conversation with the Assistant Principal. If inappropriate use continues, Rockway’s Discipline Policy will be implemented, including contact with the parents.

In Grades 7 and 8, cell phones and personal electronic devices are not used in classes. If students choose to bring them to school, they will be kept in students’ lockers for access before and after school, and during lunch.

ROCKWAY’S DRESS CODEAt Rockway, we stress the principles of personal cleanliness, self-respect, and good taste when determining guidelines for appropriate school attire. We strive to reinforce in all students a sense of responsibility to self and others, by encouraging all to dress in a manner which promotes a positive and productive learning environment. Rockway’s expectations for appropriate school attire are as follows:

• Briefs and boxers should not be visible.

• Muscle shirts, low-cut shirts, off the shoulder tops, halter tops and spaghetti straps should not be worn unless they are covered with a sweatshirt, sweater, shrug or shirt.

• Shorts must cover the entire bum with an additional 1½ or more inches of length below the bum.

• Skirts and dresses need to reach to the midthigh, so when the student bends over, their bum will not be exposed.

• Footwear must be worn at all times for health and safety reasons.

• Clothing with inappropriate words, phrases, or graphics that do not align with Rockway’s Mission and Four Pillars are not to be worn.

• Hats, hoods and ear buds need to be removed during chapel. In the interest of enhancing community life at Rockway, students are encouraged to refrain from using ear buds in the hallways and in the lunchroom. Students are asked to respect the direction of their individual teachers regarding this expectation in their individual classes.

ROCKWAY’S DISCIPLINE POLICYRockway’s full discipline policy is explained in detail in the student planner which each student will receive the first day of school. Serious discipline issues are those which run contrary to our school’s code of conduct. Students will be accountable for their choices outlined in the behavioural and policy expectations of the school’s discipline policy. They are reminded that under no circumstances are knives (pocket, folding, whittling, collector and hunting/fishing, etc.) to be brought on campus. As well, students are to refrain from flagrant use of foul, profane, vulgar or abusive language while on campus or on school related activities.
