Professional hair brand KMS California are delighted to announce the UK Art Team for 2012:Ahkeem Yussuf from Elements in Teddington (2nd year running)

Olive Tucker from House of Colour in Dublin

Luke Jennings from Burlingtons in Birmingham

Nicola Smyth from Arabella in Leamington Spa

The 4 talented members were selected after a gruelling application process which included submitting a photo-graphic interpretation of theme “Be Desired. Be Iconic”, and presenting a model to a panel of experts including former British Afro Hairdresser of the Year Kim Johnson.

The excited foursome have now completed training at The KMS Academy to ensure that they can represent the brand as key spokespeople for the next 12 months, experiencing money-can’t-buy opportunities.

To bring their talent to life, they are creating their very own Photo Shoot, which will be featured in trade and consumer press, released virally on the web and seen UK-wide.

KMS California believes in freedom of style expression, which is why the shoot will represent the personality of the team – it’s their chance to express themselves.

The new KMS UK Art Team will experience lots of exciting times during 2012, so watch this space. Previous KMS UK Art Team members include Desmond Murray, Sean Dawson and Kim Johnson! These 4 are definitely the rising stars of the hairdressing industry and ones to follow on a journey to success.

4 UPDATE 05/12

UTOPIAAQUATIC EXISTENCE

As new technologies and social platforms force us closer together, many in 2012 are looking to the natural world for a crucial escape into uncharted landscape and a space where we can feel free. The intensity of the true colours found in nature – sunsets, changing skies and seasons – is even more powerful seen through the eyes of the first generation of digital natives. Fashion is inspired by the opulence of the outdoor world, offering unique and joyful patterns, textures and shades. So when GOLDWELL offered a challenge to FDA final year students studying hair and make-up, it was an opportunity to expand their normal vision. How might each styling group conceive colour and contour differently? How might they research a transformative posture and palette for the world ‘FasciNature’?

Six different groups went to work, suggesting fresh and innovative approaches in both hair and fashion, with accompanying narrative concepts. Trend research was undertaken so that a fresh and directional vision was applied to creative photography, make-up, hair and design.

FasciNature was deconstructed via editorial stories, capturing fashion moments that are both fanciful and forward thinking, conceived by students with imagination, purpose and attitude.

Funky FasciNatureLondon College of Fashion’s take on the Goldwell FasciNature Trend

ttMelancholia: There's a childlike innocence to the way plaits are empowered, hair is given key direction, but also romantically poised for extra sensuality. Fashionable in white; clothes add layers of history, mystery and magic. Note the use of nature's artisanal violet to convey that extra shade.

t Aquatic Existence: 2012 is diving into the underwater world of fish, shells and mermaids. But the colour salmon is artfully used here to show how colour can be looked at in terms of vibrancy and deterioration. The hair and make-up details expose our fascination with the gloss and shiny; a surreal, metaphysical reality using new latex fashion.

MELANCHOLIA

Page 5: UPDATE - Fashion Focus issue - May 2012

Utopia: The future returns us to the past with this nostalgic mix of East and West. Styling detail that celebrates the microscopic power of plant life detail vibrant in many emerging fashion designs. Carousel memories unite these two ‘FasciNature’ models. q

UTOPIA A CLASS ACT GRANDIOSITY

A Class Act: The way colour connects two different social classes is bought to life in this story focussing on 2012 use of purple. Showing off one’s own 21st century casual style in a year of protest and evolution. q

Grandiosity: Hair here has been dip-dyed to attract even more attention. This embodies the idea of ‘FasciNature’ via Narcissism. In a world of big hair, how do you make your own hair statement stand out even more? 2012 is allowing more individuality of style using colour and personal nuance. q

The Religion of Artifice: Iconography and imagery that is both poignant and pseudo. Although carefully preened and playfully adorned, excess key props consume the male model. Colour that shines through with fun amidst this backdrop of fakery. A fashion tale of Nature’s adornment and consumer devotees. u

1The repair innovation for a new colour feeling: Healthy hair gets its beauty and sheen from a perfect balance of lipids. Chemicals, mechanical processes and environmental factors strip the hair of these lipids, causing a flat, brittle and dull appearance. BOrA AKSUAT LONDON fASHiON wEEK

KMS California made its first appearance at London Fashion Week since its relaunch last September. Bora Aksu, the Turkish designer acclaimed for his romantic style with a dark side, invited KMS to create his models’ hair backstage. The show took place in the main courtyard space of Somerset House and was packed with excited fashionistas eager to see the designer’s latest creations.

The Autumn/winter ‘12 collection was romantic with soft shades, subtle prints and delicate fabrics including silk. The famous Bora Aksu twist came towards the end when the collection was livened up with bright orange and fuchsia colour clashes. These eye-catching pieces added another beautiful dimension to the range. The stunning show had a russian theme running throughout, supported by eclectic music and beautiful textured hair.

KMS California invited Sam Bright and Tash Wilson from woo in Essex, to style the models’ hair backstage alongside renowned session stylist James Pecis. Hair was slicked back into a low knotted ponytail and wrapped around the nape of the neck. for texture, the hair at the top was teased out and a beautiful piece of lace was added for further glamour.

Sam Bright says

“it is amazing to be a part of London fashion week and create unique looks. The key product we used to create the Bora Aksu look was HAIRPLAY makeover spray, it is great for adding texture and bulk to the hair, and made it easier for us to backcomb and knot the hair to achieve the gorgeous looks created on all the models”

CHRISTOPHER RAEBURN

Karly, Abby and Maria worked with James to create the key hair looks:

“we’ve created hair looks that compliment the designs - exaggerated side partings that go right back to the crown look dramatic with the oversized scarves. we’ve also used a french tonging technique to add detail to the front of the hair to create interest under the hoods. Key looks have been low nape ponytails that give the illusion of a bob from the front, but with a fresh twist of length at the back. Products: StyleSign Double Boost to create root lift, StyleSign Just Smooth styling milk to smooth the hair and combat static, and StyleSign Big Finish hairspray for body and hold.”

Goldwell were the official hair sponsor for British Designer Christopher ræburn’s London fashion week presentations on Saturday 18th february. famed for his ethically-aware utilitarian designs often created from recycled fabrics, Christopher ræburn’s attention to detail and meticulous craftsmanship have earned him a reputation as a fashion pioneer.

Goldwell invited Karly Whittaker, Abby Oliver and Maria Gay from the Sarah Hodge Hair & Beauty Group in Taunton to work on the hair backstage with renowned session stylist James rowe.

The presentations showcased raeburn’s Autumn/winter 2012 collection, a luxe sport-inspired collection of outer wear and a capsule collection of dresses. raincoats in pearlescent tones made from parachute fabric were a key look, teamed with fit and flare woollen dresses in rich autumnal tones and pencil dresses with sporty wedges and oversized scarves and hoods. The collection is luxurious while remaining functional and fun.

British couturier Nicholas Oakwell invited Goldwell to create the hair for his much anticipated GriMA couture show in Mayfair.

Picture the scene, the beautiful Claridges Hotel, 27 stunning models dressed in sumptuous 60’s inspired couture gowns dripping with gold, a host of fashion’s elite in the audience and a 40 metre u-shaped catwalk. The Nicholas Oakwell show is in town.

inspired by the work of jewellery designer Andrew Grima, each gown clearly reflected an iconic Grima piece, for example the necklace worn by Ursula Andress in the 1967 film Casino royale, all with a distinct 60’s twist. Opulence was key, with fabrics including organza, crocodile, chiffon and tulle, embellished with Ostrich feathers, bugle beads, crystals and pailettes. with a collection this gorgeous, it was vital for the hair to complement the outfits.

Three Goldwell salons were invited by the brand to work backstage at this unique show. Adam Burch (Elements in Teddington), Lauren Turner & Lucy Fenn (Spirit in High wycombe) and Hayley Welling, Karen Scantlebery, Natasha Mason, Natale Milone (Cienté in Berkhamsted) spent 5 hours working with head session stylist Karin Bigler to create the stunning 60’s beehive back-sweep style - a befit-ting style which perfectly finished each model’s look.

The result – a fairy tale of high couture to inspire and delight every fashionista.

5 lucky hairdressing students from a local

Goldwell went on the road in March to present their latest hair colour innovation, NeCTAYA, Goldwell’s first ammonia-free colour and exclusively premium colour service. The Nectaya experience Tour set out to explain how to introduce the service into your salon, and the importance of first class service.

The tour travelled nationwide from 12th-20th March, visiting Newport, Manchester, Coventry, Newmarket and London and was presented by William Wilson, Goldwell Creative & Technical Direction. Nectaya was developed to meet the high expectations of a new generation of clients, who are both aware of product ingredients and are looking for a salon service with luxury appeal. William explained that salons must adapt to this demand by exceeding clients’ expectations at every step of their salon journey, from consultation to follow-up.
