TV: SNLA/KTLA/MLBN | Radio: AM 570 (English); KTNQ 1020 AM
WEEKEND WARRIORS: The Dodgers look to bounce back tonight
after having their four-game winning streak snapped at the hands of the
NL East’s Washington Nationals last night, 5-2. Tonight is the middle
contest of a three-game series with the Nats and the second of a six-game
homestand (0-1) that also features three games with the Miami Marlins
next week.
The Dodgers and Nationals split their six games last season
with each team scoring exactly 16 runs in the series. Los
Angeles has won 12 of the last 19, dating to the start of the
2015 campaign, including six of the last 10 at Chavez Ravine.
This evening is Cody Bellinger Bobblehead Night presented
by Spectrum and tomorrow’s series finale will be a nationally
televised game on ESPN (the Dodgers’ third this season) and
the Dodgers’ first Viva Los Dodgers presented by Coca-Cola
and Spectrum of the season prior to the game. Also tomorrow,
the first 12,000 kids 14 and under will receive a Jr. Dodgers
Bat Bag presented by Hi-Chew.
Despite going 0-for-3 last night, Bellinger has reached base via
a walk or hit in seven consecutive games and ranks second on
the team with a .292 average (21-for-72).
SATURDAY IS RYU DAY: The Dodgers will send lefty Hyun-Jin
Ryu to the mound tonight for his fourth start of the season, following
two consecutive strong outings in which he has yielded just two runs and
four hits in 12.0 innings while striking out 17. On the season, Ryu is 2-
0 with a 2.87 ERA (5 ER/15.2 IP) and has held hitters to a .164 average
(9-for-55).
Surprisingly, Ryu has made just two starts against the
Nationals in his career and both came last year. In those two
starts, he’s 0-1 with a 3.09 ERA (4 ER/11.2 IP).
SETTING UP THE AMBUSH: Last night, the Nationals were
swinging at an inordinate amount of first pitches, but it’s the Dodgers
who have the best average in the National League when swinging at the
first pitch:
NL, Highest Batting Average on 0-0 Count - 2018
Los Angeles Dodgers .395 (32/81)
Philadelphia Phillies .356
New York Mets .354
Chicago Cubs .329
Cincinnati Reds .325
*The Astros (.441) are the only team with a higher average on the first
pitch than the Dodgers in 2018. SOURCE: STATS, LLC

30. Some of the items up for bid include signed bats, cleats, jerseys,

auction items or to make a bid, visit www.mlb.com/UmpsCare.
UP OFF THE MATT: Dodger left fielder Matt Kemp is off to a strong
start this season, hitting .340 (17-for-50) with a team lead-tying three
home runs as well as seven runs scored and 10 RBI. Kemp has
experienced some success against Nationals’ starting pitcher Stephen
Strasburg, batting .333 (8-for-24) with a homer, three doubles and two
walks. The native of Oklahoma is just five doubles shy of tying Dodger
legend Ron Cey for sixth place on the L.A. Dodgers’ all-time doubles
list and seven hits away from tying Steve Sax for eighth on the Los
Angeles all-time hit list.
RECENCY BIAS: The Dodgers and Nationals have been the two best
regular season teams in baseball the last six years:
MLB, Most Wins – Since 2012
Los Angeles Dodgers 567
Washington Nationals 565
St. Louis Cardinals 555
New York Yankees 535
Cleveland Indians 531
THE KEY COG: Dodger catcher Yasmani Grandal has been the best
hitter on the club thus far and last night extended his hitting streak to
nine games with an RBI-single in the seventh inning. Grandal ranks
fourth in the National League with a .345 average (20-for-58) and also
ranks among the National League leaders in OPS (1.010, 7th), on-base
percentage (.424, 9th) and slugging percentage (.586, T-6th). Grandal is
one of the few Dodger catchers in franchise history to have an OPS over
1.000 in the season’s first month:
Dodgers Catchers, Highest OPS in March/April – All-Time
(minimum 50 PA)
1953 Roy Campanella 1.156
1977 Steve Yeager 1.117
1955 Roy Campanella 1.081
1973 Joe Ferguson 1.050
1998 Mike Piazza 1.022
2018 Yasmani Grandal 1.010 (.424 + .586)
SOURCE: STATS, LLC
PITCHING IN: The Dodgers’ 3.79 ERA ranks ninth in the NL, but they
are making the opposition earn it as their 48 walks are the fewest on the
senior circuit. Just two teams in baseball have issued fewer free passes
than the Dodgers, as the Oakland A’s have walked 45 and the Cleveland
Indians have walked 41 hitters.
Los Angeles currently holds the highest strikeout-to-walk ratio
in the National League with a 4.02 (193 K/48 BB) mark. The
Dodgers posted the highest strikeout-to-walk ratio in the NL
last season (3.50), while ranking second to the Indians (3.98)
for the big league lead.
The Dodgers have averaged 10.02 strikeouts per nine innings,
which ranks third in the NL, trailing just the Nationals (10.57)
and Mets (10.13).
THE BIG BOPPER: Dodger center fielder Chris Taylor reached base
safely four times last night, going 2-for-3 with two walks while collecting a
triple and a double. Since the start of the 2017 season when Taylor played
regularly for the first time in his career, his seven triples are tied for sixth in
the NL and his .487 slugging percentage ranks eighth among all outfielders.
WHAT A JOC: The Dodgers would like to wish a very happy birthday to
Joc Pederson, who turns 26 today! Pederson walked and scored the
Dodgers’ first run of the game last night and his six base on balls this season
are tied with Kiké Hernández for fifth on the club, one back of the team
lead, held by four players.
A LOOK BACK: On this date in 1890, the Dodgers picked up their
first National League win with a 7-6 victory over the Braves. `
DIGGING THE BEAN BALL: Dodger second baseman Chase Utley was
hit by a pitch for the 200th time in his 16-year career Tuesday and is now one
of eight players in Major League history to be hit by a pitch 200 or more
times. The active leader in hit by pitches is slashing .333 (13-for-
39)/.438/.487 with five runs, three doubles, a homer and nine RBI in 15
games to start the season.
HAVE YOU EVER SEEN THE RAIN?: On this date in 1967, the Dodgers
were rained out for the first time in Los Angeles, snapping a streak of 737
days without a washout. The current streak and all-time record is 1,546
games without a rainout, with the last rain postponement at Chavez Ravine
coming on April 17, 2000.
