How Your Brain Can Make You a Better Golfer If you golf, your brain is either your best friend or your biggest enemy. Every golfer at every level suffers from some of the the same complaints. “I can hit the ball on the range, but not on the course.” Even pros, as they make swing changes, struggle to play as well as

they practice. Little secret about the pros. They actually don’t take a swing change into competition until they trust it more than their old swing. “I get so nervous.” Yep. And you should. Golf is hard and the moment you care about how you play or how you look, the stress response in your brain, your alarm, will fire. Why do the pros play worse on Sunday? Their alarms.

for fun. Your intention decides whether your alarm turns on or recognizes there is nothing to worry about. Second, choose your target before every shot. At the range, after you have warmed up, choose what target you’re going to aim for. Don’t just rifle balls and think you’re playing great golf. On the course, behind the ball, choose. The more specific you are about what you’re trying to do, the more your alarm turns down. That doesn’t mean you’ll hit every shot perfectly. It means you won’t be as nervous because you’re alarm knows you’ve clearly chosen what you want to do. Third, swing smooth or go big. Ernie is slow and methodical, and the ball goes a long way. Bubba swings out of his shoes, and the ball goes a long way. If you change the energy you put into each shot, your alarm will fire. It realizes you can’t make up your mind how you want to swing and the squirrels will be running for cover in the woods. Finally, seek advice. Your brain is happi-est when you have an instructor, a friend who is a better golfer, or a good golf book to help you stay focused on what you’re trying improve. They loan you their more experi-enced brains so you can turn down the alarm in yours. Look at the bottom of the leaderboard each week and the high scores will surprise you. Even pros have bad days and the best golfers are the ones who manage the alarm in the brain. Use these four brain tips to have more fun and play your best next time you hit the links. His first two professionals gained status on the Latin America PGA Tour on their first attempts.

ASGA-DC Members, We Need a New Social Chair Shannon Bonk has resigned from the Board as Social Chair for personal rea-sons. She will be doing scheduled events through July, and joining us on the golf

course. We are so grateful to Shannon for her imagination and energy these past 17 months. She’s revitalized the Social Chair position and we’re all the better for her efforts. Please thank her personally when

you get the chance. We will need a new Social Chair to con-tinue her efforts for the remainder of this year and perhaps into next year. You can read the duties in the bylaws and on the website. We don’t follow them that well. Basically, your role would be to plan events, generally monthly, that are fun, and attend quarterly board meetings. Past events have been Happy Hours, Nationals game, Escape Room, Picnic on the Farm, more Happy Hours, Toys for Tots, Arling-

ton Wreath Laying, more Happy Hours…. Our staple is the monthly Happy Hour

but as you see the sky’s the limit. For those who are feeling intimidated by following in Shannon’s footsteps, please don’t. First of all, you don’t have to do this all by yourself. As Social Chair, you recruit EC’s (Event Coordinators) to host the events. You will have a committee for advice and assistance. Your committee members are Lauren Davis, Leesa Weiss, Annette McGuire, and Suzanne McNicholas. So, please consider being Social Chair. We need your energy and your planning skills (talents we all have!) And remem-ber, men are welcome to apply too. Golf-ers are very social. So step up, gentle-

men, and show us a good time! Please contact Heidi Moos if you are interested or would like to nominate some-

one. Thank you!!!

Janice Bittner HOLE IN ONE! Hi fellow ASGAers, Some of you may remember the invite asking if you’d like to participate in the IRS 50th anniversary golf event at Shenandoah Valley Golf Club which was held this past Friday. It was a great event and there was a special highlight. One of our own ASGA members and a fellow IRS retiree, Janice Bittner scored a hole-in-one and for that great shot, she received a custom-fitted set of Callaway irons. Tony Paduano was fortunate enough to be in Janice’s four-some along with another ASGA member, Wayne Crupi, who filled in for an injured player and we were fortunate enough to witness her feat. This was Janice’s first hole-in-one. Congratulations to her!!!!

RECAPS Patuxent Greens – May 20 Twenty-eight amazing people ventured to Patuxent Greens on Saturday to play golf in fairways that were partly under wa-ter from the 4” of rain the previous eve-ning. We laughed about the ducks that were swimming in the middle of the 2nd fairway. Water, water everywhere made things tough from tee to green. Getting to the greens was a challenge, but the failure to putt well had nothing to do with the greens because they were in very good shape. The course did not charge for people who didn't show up and their checks have been destroyed. Those who did show up will be receiving a $12 refund either by mail or at one of the two next events. This “gift” from the golf course staff was discov-ered when I did the reconciliation and found out that we were only charged $25/person. A big THANK YOU to the staff at Patuxent Greens. Winners of Closest to the Pin on Hole #7 were Tom Haley and Bea Stryker. Everyone won something in the team contest in which teams were awarded for the Longest Putt on each of the 18 greens. Hampshire Greens-May 27 On Saturday, May 27, twenty-four of our intrepid chapter members gathered at Hampshire Greens Golf Course to test their skills against the bent grass design and more drizzly late spring weather. Though umbrellas and rain gear were oc-

casionally deployed, overall the weather was OK and the showers were very light, scattered and a minor inconvenience. All players could thus concentrate on the course, which was challenging but a fair test of golf. After the round, we met in the clubhouse for libations and to make awards to the winners of the Par 3 clos-est-to-the-pin competitions. The winners were as follows: Hole #4: Diane Lowe Hole #8: Dave Sheets Hole #11: George Salmon Hole # 14: Slammin' George Salmon After golf twenty of our group convened at Ricciutti's Restaurant in Olney, where

we feasted on fine food and drink and con-tinued to lavish ourselves in each other's good company. Scott Hall We were twenty lucky members of our chapter who got to enjoy a gorgeous day at the Rocky Point golf course. What a relief from the wet weather we have been subjected to so far this season. Everyone appreciated this player friendly course with its large inviting greens. While enjoying the comfortable temperatures we were soaking in the beautiful views of the waterways, the Chesapeake Bay and the local ospreys.

The golfers that were able to threaten the pin the best on the Par 3s were Mark Hendrickson, Joann St Peter and George Salmon. The other game in play was longest putt made on each of the 18 holes. The 1st team garnered an amazing 7 of them. These putting phenoms con-sisted of Annette McGuire, Kathie Hiatt, Ann Jardine and Scott Hall. After working up a good appetite we all trekked over to Annette's home for a scrumptious chef prepared meal and adult beverages while enjoying the water views from her spacious deck. We know some of you traveled 1 1/2 to 2 hours up from DC and Virginia. We want to thank all of you for making the trip to this course and our place afterwards. An-nette and I certainly enjoyed your com-pany.

Queenstown Harbor- June 10 What a glorious day at Queenstown! The weather was gorgeous, and the course was in immaculate condition. Who cares if the River Course ate a few too many of our golf balls? This course is consistently rated one of best in Maryland and the D.C. Area, and I'm sure the 26 ASGA'rs who played would agree. The views of the

Chester River were spectacular. In our closest to the pin contest the four show-offs were Charlie Davis, Rita Daley,

Sam Tolbert and Todd Sheffer. After the round, a large group decamped to the Narrows restaurant for some excel-

lent seafood on the way home. ~BJ Barger

Blue Ridge Shadows- June 17 Thank you to everyone who signed up & came out to play at Blue Ridge Shadows Golf Course. Please remember to save your red ticket stub as BRS will draw those stub numbers on Monday for prizes. If they pick your number, they will call you. There are a variety of prizes to be given out, a Cleveland club, clothing, free golf to name a few ! We had a nice weather, a breeze, & partly cloudy conditions that kept us cooler than last year’s 97 degree day. And the Golf Gods kept the predicted thunderstorms away too! Congrats to all the Closest to the Pin Winners. Ladies par 3 holes were: 3 & 12

No one won hole 3—so that money was divided up & added to the other 3 winner pots. Deb Swedberg won Hole 12 I guess some of the Ladies did not eat their Wheaties Saturday morning. Men’s par 3 holes were: 5 & 10 Michael Cioppi won Hole 5 Sam Tolbert won Hole 10 Jazz in the Garden - June 9 The weather was glorious on Fri-day! We arrived early at the Sculpture Garden and got a primo location - table and chairs in the shade. There was food, Sangria, music, and friendship. We were joined by Betsy, Kathleen, Leesa, Pat, BJ, Yoneko, Heddy, Angela, Joann, Mary Lou, Francine, Rita, and… Richard. Poor Richard was sur-rounded by 14 wonderful women. De-spite his terrible predicament Richard managed to enjoy himself. The gardens, the weather, the music, the company - it was a perfect way to end the week. Thank you to all who came and shared a relaxing evening with us! We look forward to the Pool Party in Alexandria, hosted by Jerry Bennis and

Shannon Bonk on Sunday, 30 July. Kathleen Griffin has volunteered to

host a military band event in August. If any of you have a great HH place or fun activity that you’d like to invite a few golfing friends to, please let me know.

We can always use more fun! See you on the course.

10 Best Proposed New Golf Rule Changes From USGA and R&A

~Nate Scott, www.foxsports.com

The USGA and R&A introduced a com-prehensive set of new rule proposals on March 8th, a big step in trying to modern-ize the game of golf, speed up play, and make things more fun. There are a lot of proposed rule changes, and you can read about all of them over at the USGA website. The plan is to take feedback from golfers now, finalize the changes in 2018, and intro-duce them officially to the rules of golf on Jan. 1, 2019. Here are the 10 rule changes that jumped out the most for making sense: 1. Player accidentally moves ball - If a player accidentally moves a ball when searching for it, or accidentally moves his/her ball marker or ball on the putting green, the new rule will be that there is no penalty. Current rule: 1-stroke penalty.

2. Accidental deflection - If a player’s ball in motion accidentally hits the player, his or her caddie, the person attending the flagstick or the attended or removed flagstick, the new rule will be that there is no penalty. Current rule: 1-stroke penalty (or 2-stroke penalty when the accidental deflection relates to the flagstick)

3. Time to search for lost ball - The new rule will be that you are allowed to search for a lost ball for three minutes. Current rule: You may search for five min-utes.

4. Taking relief for a ball embedded in pitch mark - A player may take relief without penalty for an embedded ball anywhere (except in sand) in the “general area” (new term for “through the green”), unless a Local Rule has been adopted restricting relief only to areas cut to fair-way height or less. Current rule: Relief is allowed only in areas cut to fairway height or less, unless a Local

Rule has been adopted allowing relief any-where (except in sand) through the green.

5. Repairing damage on putting green - New rule: A player may repair almost any damage (including spike marks and animal damage but not including natural imperfec-tions) on the putting green. Current rule: A player may only repair ball-marks or old hole plugs on the putting green.

6. Touching sand in the bunker with club or hand - New rule: No penalty ex-cept when a player touches sand (1) with his or her hand or club to test the condi-tions of the bunker or (2) with the club in the area right behind or in front of the ball, in making a practice swing or in making the backswing for the stroke. Current rule: Any touching of sand with hand or club re-sults in loss of hole/2-stroke penalty (with exceptions).

7. Playing with damaged club - New rule: A player may keep using any dam-aged club, even if the player damaged it in anger. Current rule: A player may use the damaged club only if it was damaged in the “normal course of play.”

8. Advice and help - New rule: A caddie is not allowed to stand on a line behind a player while the player is taking his or her stance and until stroke is made. Current rule: A caddie is allowed to stand on a line behind a player while the player is taking a stance and preparing to play, but must not stand there while the player makes the stroke.

9. Pace of play - New rule: Recommends that players make each stroke in no more than 40 seconds, and usually in less time. Current rule: No recommendations are given.

10. Trusting players' judgment - New rule: When estimating or measuring a spot, point, line, area or distance under a Rule, a player’s reasonable judgment will not be second-guessed based on later evidence (such as video review) if the player did all that could be reasonably expected under the circumstances to make an accurate estimation or measure-ment. Current rule: A player’s judgment is given no particular weight or deference; the Committee decides any issue about the ac-curacy of the estimation or measurement based on a review of all facts.

Event Details . . .

Cooperstown, New York Will Be Fun. Your turn at bat! The Albany chapter of the American Singles Golf Association has put considerable work into offering ASGA members nation-wide an opportunity to play and stay at a premier location in the country’s northeast. There’s this place that allows you to forget about those “other things in life,” while you absorb nature at its finest. It’s called Otesaga Resort. Look at your calendar. Erase anything you have going on for the weekend of September 22-24. It’s going to be that good. Play Leatherstocking Golf Club, a legendary course with a beau-tiful layout. So stop what you're doing and head to that world wide internet place and begin drooling: www.Otesaga.com Albany, ASGA has reserved 30 rooms, most likely enough for 50 people, as many room together, but don’t hesitate. With peak fall season in northern New York, I wouldn’t be surprised if within 2-3 weeks the rooms fill up. See the flyer and registration form that accompanies this newsletter, or visit this website to download all forms: www.SinglesGolf.com/Cooperstown Oh! Canada Courtyard Marriott Fills-Up July 16/17 Fairmont Tremblant: more rooms for the July 18-20 portion of event We’re up to 73 players. Good news, however, the Courtyard Marriott in Montreal says we’ve surpassed our allotment. The original play was for two days in Montreal then three days in Tremblant. No problem if you want to head straight to Tremblant for the 3-day event, but if you want to fly into Montreal and stay a couple of days there before heading to Tremblant, we’ll try to accommodate you. Just email [email protected] and express your desire. We’ll see how many others want to do that as well. So join 70+ others. www.SinglesGolf.com/Canada is the site to visit. Sign-up with a friend if you want to save money and share a room.

The 2018 Seine River Cruise Paris, France — September 9 — 18, 2018 We’ve selected Tauck as our river cruise company of choice. Tauck, a 92-year-old company that started providing tours to parts of America and Canada many people had never seen, has helped ASGA plan this trip with a promise our members will thoroughly enjoy from private tours of small and historic French towns along the Seine River to the beauty of the MS Swiss Sap-phire ship itself, the professionalism of the Tauck staff, to the highly acclaimed food that will be prepared for us each evening. Having taken this itinerary as a site visit in October of last

year, I can personally attest to the great “first class” value. ASGA has “special pricing.” We never pay what the public pays for our multi-chapter events, whether on the mainland or overseas. (We’re not allowed to actually tell you price difference, but if you go to the website and click on the COST tab, see for yourself!) Our itinerary is to visit the historic monuments in Rouen, the English Channel villages of Etretat and Honfleur, Jumieges Ab-bey, one of the great Benedictines of France, Chateau Gaillard, Claude Monet’s home and a lot more. At our halfway point on the cruise, we’ll visit the D-Day beaches of Normandy. Head to www.SinglesGolf.com/RiverCruise or review the video at www.SinglesGolf.com/RiverCruiseVideo. Tauck even offers quarterly payments to make it easier on you. So be thinking about whom you’d like to room with to save on your overall costs. Airfare to Paris is not included and we urge you to purchase trip insurance since the trip is 15 months away!

Golf Rules

Yes, golf rules much of our lives but did you know there’s a series of proposed golf rule changes? In an attempt to make the game a bit friendlier and to hasten play, the USGA and the R&A have tossed out some suggestions for some (much needed) rule changes. Well, much needed if you’re on the PGA tour. Seven proposals have to do with taking relief. Totally not what you’re thinking . . . although I have taken relief many times on the course. It’s part of the rules, folks. So your ball is in the bunker and Mr. Butterfly lands on your ball. He’s impressed with those cute divots. So impressed that he stays there seemingly forever. Under current rules, he’s con-sider a “loose impediment” and you cannot do anything to shoo him or any other loose impediment away. With the proposed rule changes, all impediments can be moved. So this sets the stage for some interesting reading, like the new rules telling you how to drop a ball. I’ve been doing that all my life or so I’ve been told. Check them out at www.SinglesGolf.com/ProposedRuleChanges
