Inspired by his childhood memories of his parents taking him to see the livestock show

and rodeo in the Sam Houston Coliseum in downtown Houston, Robert Valentine has

spent many years of his adult life as a Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo volunteer. He

has served on the NASA/Clear Creek/Friendswood Metro Go Texan Committee and

captained the Alvin/Pearland Metro Go Texan Committee, two of many subcommittees

which raise 100’s of thousands of dollars annually by holding dances, style shows, cook-

offs and golf tournaments, and other events, to publicize the Show and raise monies for

scholarships of seniors in their areas. Robert serves on the Rodeo Clown Team

Committee which, among many of its services, judges the BBQ Cook-Offs and entertains

special needs groups with special events like the most recent mini trail ride for the

citizens of Brookwood. This is Robert’s 6th

year to serve on the HLSR Speakers

Committee and we are pleased that he will be speaking and sharing his stories and

experiences with the chamber at the March luncheon meeting at La Quinta on March 12.

and testing services. In 1988, Michael moved the young company to the Houston area, to be closer to the international oil companies and DTE equipment manufacturers clustered there. Incorporated in Texas as WEST-Hou, Inc., the company experienced slow but steady

growth. During this time, the company emerged as an industry leader in DTE. Michael's contributions to the drilling industry and his technical excellence were demonstrated by his

participation as a voting member of API standards committees.

In 1998, the Cotton Gin in Brookshire became the corporate headquarters for WEST. Significant staff additions over the years greatly expanded both the technical quality and

breadth of services offered by WEST. In December 2001, the corporate name was changed to WEST Engineering Services, primarily to reflect an increasing volume of engineering consulting work. The company eventually grew to over 200 individuals stationed

strategically throughout the world. WEST featured a number of field surveyors with extensive experience in a wide range of drilling equipment. At the same time, a group of

engineers with solid expertise in drilling equipment design and use complemented the experience of those in the field. For 28 years, WEST Engineering Services has provided consulting, training and services for drilling equipment on rigs of all types, from ultra-deep-

water to land rigs and is the preeminent leader in the fields of well control and drilling equipment surveys, commissioning and assessments.

In May 2012, WEST Engineering Services was acquired by Lloyd’s Register Group Limited

Friday, February 22nd

, will mark the end of an era

when the last of the WEST Engineering employees

and their equipment leave the Cotton Gin for their

new home in Houston. West Engineering Services, a

founding member and Sustaining Member since

2009 of the West I-10 Chamber of Commerce, has

played a large role in the growth and success of the

Chamber for which we are forever grateful.

WEST was founded by Janet and Michael Montgomery as

WEST Ltd. in 1984, in Aberdeen, Scotland. At that time, none of the equipment manufacturers offered any type of training for BOP (blow out preventer) equipment in Europe. In September

of 1984, Michael and Janet started a company focused on DTE training. The first seminar was presented in January of 1985. Shortly after, clients began calling for help with their drill-

through equipment. WEST Ltd. became the first company in

the world to provide third-party DTE training, inspection

in a highly strategic acquisition and perhaps the largest acquisition in Lloyd’s Register Group’s 200 year history. An acknowledged leader in subsea systems, WEST has now

joined with the ModuSpec Group and other Group members under the Lloyd’s Register banner, to offer the world's most comprehensive suite of technical services to owners and operators of offshore drilling rigs. Under the terms of the acquisition, WEST Engineering

Services became a member of the Lloyd's Register Group, a global organization that provides independent assurance and expert advice to companies operating high-risk, capital-

intensive assets in the energy and transportation sectors. Michael Montgomery, owner and founder of WEST, retired as President and was retained by Lloyd's Register as an advisor. Paul Huber, President, Lloyd’s Register Americas, Inc., became the President of WEST.

The good news for Brookshire is that both Michael and Janet Montgomery (Janet J Montgomery, CFP, CWS is a Silver Member) continue to be very active supporters of the community and the West I-10 Chamber of Commerce.

th, 5-7PM, on your calendars now for the Chamber’s “It takes a

community” 2nd

Annual Ice Cream Social which will be held at the Pattison Area

Volunteer Fire Department. Greatly inspired by the success and member and

community support of the 2012 1st Ice Cream Social Fundraiser, the Fundraising

Committee, chaired by Steve Pierson, has been meeting together with the Education

Committee and the Royal school district planning and setting higher goals for the 2nd

Annual FUNdraiser. The main purpose is to raise funds to finance scholarships, reading

programs, mentoring programs and other programs to motivate teachers and students to

reach higher academic goals. Sponsorships are needed and greatly appreciated. If you

or your organization would consider a sponsorship, please contact Steve Pierson,

832.661.8800 or email [email protected] or [email protected].

th Luncheon guest speaker Trey Duhon addressed the Chamber guests on

the Waller County Sub-Regional Planning Commission (SRPC), its history, makeup,

and how it works to protect rural communities – while everyone dined on the delicious

barbequed ribs at Galileo’s in Pattison. Director Steve Pierson took the opportunity to

present member plaque to new member Valerie Williams of Fast Tag Engraving.

Special thanks to Trey for sharing his time and expertise, for all the attendees’

participation, and to Vickie Casto of Brookshire EDC for the docu-memories here and

on facebook.
