Welcome Back!EverGreen has some exciting changes to share!

Welcome back, North Fulton teachers and PTA! We hope you had a wonderful, relaxing summer. The EverGreen staff is gearing up for another exciting year!

We had some great participation in the 2011-2012 school year, but we wanted to make it even better this year. More importantly, we want the program to benefit you, the teachers and parents who are bringing environmental education into the schools. After some brainstorming, we have decided to change the format of our meetings. We hope that these changes will bring a renewed sense of enthuasiasm to the program.

After a full day of teaching, we understand that you may not want to sit through another meeting, so we have decided to make our short time together interactive and hands-on. This will include demonstrations of new lessons and programs, a curriculum workshop to earn PLUs, and a field trip to experience the natural world we teach about - and perhaps even more importantly, give you a chance to have fun, unwind, and network with other educators. Our schedule for the year includes:

• A Resource Fair on September 5 at the Chattahoochee Nature Center• Outdoor classroom and lesson demonstrations in November• Leopold Education Project curriculum workshop in January• A field trip in March• An end of the year sharing meeting in May

Stay tuned for more details!

Congratulations to Johns Creek, a Certified Wildife Habitat!

Congratulations to the city of Johns Creek, recently certified as a Community Wildlife Habitat through the National Wildlife Federation! On May 8, Johns Creek became the second city in Georgia to recieve this designation.

The project was spearheaded by high schooler Malcom Barnard. To receive certification, the city had to complete several education and volunteer projects, as well as certify a certain number of homes, public areas, and schools. To learn more about the project and how you can participate, visit www.johnscreekwildlifehabitat.org/.

North Fulton CommunityWildlife Habitat Updates

Milton’s Certification Underway!

Milton is officially registered with the National Wildlife Federation after completing a lengthy application including the support of City Council and staff. We are now up to 85 properties certified but to achieve certification for the city we need a minimum of 65 more homes. Most Milton properties qualify immediately for NWF certification, or with minimal work.

To learn more about this project, become a volunteer or to certify your property, email [email protected]. Our next NWF committee meeting (open to the community) will be Wednesday, Aug. 15 at 7 PM at the Executive Conference Room, City Hall, 13000 Deerfield Parkway, entrance G. The meeting will discuss the start of a NWF demonstration garden, and updates on the project.

In March, the City of Roswell registered to become a Certified Community Wildlife Habitat with the National Wildlife Federation! We are now working towards our goal of at least 200 certified homes. It’s easy to get your home certified by providing food, shelter, water, and a place to raise young for wildlife.

To help citizens with this endeavor, the City of Roswell is partnering with Monarchs Across Georgia to offer a native plant sale at City Hall on October 6. Purchase beautiful plants for your garden that are easy to maintain, drought resistant, and attract butterflies! Proceeds from the sale will benefit Monarchs Across Georgia.

For more information on Roswell’s project, upcoming events, or how you can help, email [email protected].

... And so is Roswell’s!

Recycling Fundraisers from SP RecyclingSP Recycling offers free green & red bins paper recycling bins all over Metro Atlanta. We partner with schools & churches to collect used paper that would otherwise go into our landfills and offer a quarterly rebate. To get involved simply identify one space in the parking lot of your school to have a bin placed. Try to select a spot that is accessible to the building and may be visible to the community – the more paper collected the better. There is no contract required. The program is not only a fund raiser, but good for the environment.

Recyclebank As part of the City’s ongoing commitment to reducing our environmental impact on the community, Alpharetta partners with Republic Services (our service provider) and RecycleBank to offer an incentive-based recycling program that motivates people to recycle. Points are earned based on how much is recycled. These points can be used for rewards such as discounts at local restaurants and businesses, national partner products and groceries. But you don’t have to live in Alpharetta to earn the same rewards! Go to www.recyclebank.com to explore this site about taking everyday green actions and how you can be rewarded with

ShoeBox Recycling Fundraiser OpportunitiesShoeBox Recycling is proud to be a for-profit recycler of shoes. Your old kicks will become someone else’s very first pair, very special pair, or much needed pair. ShoeBox helps schools raise funds to support programs of their choosing. We give you our specially designed boxes, which can hold up to 40lbs of shoes and we pay $.50 per pound as well as provide UPS

pre-paid shipping labels. That’s really it. You fill the boxes with shoes and we pay you based on weight. For more information, visit www.shoeboxrecycling.com.
