*There will be some afternoons when the students will be withMrs McDonald to prepare for our lessons with Tom Covell andcreate our action plan.

For all the dates above-If you have a set of working binocularsthat your child can use for bird watching then your child will nothave to share with their group.

All parents of students who are a part of this program arewelcome to join us on any of these occasions.

We learned to use our ears and then our eyes to find birds. Thisis a Noisy Minor nest. We figured this out after looking at Ken’s(one of the Birdlife Australia volunteers) Bird Watching App. Thedistinctive marks on the egg shell gave us the main clue weneeded.

TOURNAMENT OF THE MINDS.PNG

Tournament of minds is about creative thinking and thinkingoutside of the box.

On Saturday, the 31st of August, Richmond North PublicSchool went to the regional competition for Sydney West, inthe arts category. Our challenge was that we had to rewritethe Wizard of Oz, but set it in your state territory or Country. A

short term challenge is where you get 5min to come up with asolution and present it to a panel judges.

We decided to go with the Aboriginal theme because it said setyour challenge in your state territory or country. In our team wehad 8 people Jessica H, Rhianna S, Kyan D, Summer H, Lily H,Holly K, Ariah M and Thomas W.

We won the entire competition with our ‘Dreamtime in Aus’ playand we are now off to compete at State! We were so proud ofour achievement.

PAPER PLANE STATE CHAMPIONSHIPSOn the 13th of August 2019, I participated in the QualifyingPaper Plane contest at the school. All the kids from Years 3-6participated. We all had to fold our own paper planes to fly onthe Basketball court. On the day my acrobatic plane flew for6.04secs and I needed to get 6secs to qualify for the StateChampionships.

The State Championships was held at the University of Sydneyon Saturday 31st August. Mr Palladino had registered me toparticipate because I had reached the qualifying time at school.Kids from all over Sydney were there.

There were 2 events per Year, Longest distance and Longestairtime. There were 2 heats to qualify for the finals, and in thefinal there were 2 attempts. We all had to fold our paper planes

3

with the paper provided, no glue or sticky tape was allowed. We could fold a new plane for every throw.

In my heats, I fly my plane for 5.20secs and 4.60secs. Thetop 6 student times got through to the finals. My times got methrough to the finals. I folded a new plane and started all overfor points in the final.

In the finals, many of us didn't throw very long times and someplanes even nose dived. We then had to wait until the longdistance was completed to know our places. The results gotput up on the board and I saw I came third with 4.53secs. Thetop 3 then got presented with our medals and a certificate. Thefirst place winner got a prize of $100.

Next year, I am going to try to win first place!

DISTRICT ALTHLETICS – RECOUNTOn Wednesday 4th September, Dad and I went to DistrictAthletics and before we arrived we got a coffee.

As soon as we arrived we realised that we were the first peopleto arrive. At 8:35 am we noticed Richmond North kids so wewent over to set up the tent with Mr Morton.

The first event was the 200m sprint and Luca from our schoolwon the 200m finals. The event after that was the 100m sprint.A kid named Jordan won the 100m finals by 1 second and hebroke a district record. After those finals it was my race, the 800m finals.

As I lined up with Tristan, I began to get very nervous. As soonas we started, my foot had a bad pain that I could not getrid of. That pushed me down to 13th. I then sprinted the last150-200m of the race which got me the position of 7th.

Many records were broken on both Friday and the Mondayincluding:-

Luca, who broke the district record for long jump and he brokeit by 30 cm.

I went into five events andthey were the 100m I came 2nd. In the 200m I came 1st. Inthe 100m finals I came 6th. Also, in the 200m finals I came 3rdand finally in the relay we came 1st. In the 200m, I found outthat I am the 3rd fastest junior girl in the whole district carnival.Everyone from our school did so well in their races, no matterwhere they placed. It was a great day for all of our students.
