Golf Pro News Continued:

Jeff Martin Retirement On June 8th Jeff Martin, Executive Director of the Clemson University Conference Center & Inn Complex officially retired after 35+ years of service with Clemson University. Dr. Martin was here from day one of the planning, construction, and operation of this entire complex. His responsibilities included the hiring and overseeing of the current management team (Garrett/Jessup) of the Walker Golf Course. He successfully guided the team through some stressful periods of operation including the complete retirement of the original construction debt loan for the hotel and golf course and led the recent major renovations project at the hotel and golf course. We owe him a great debt of gratitude for his years of service and leadership. His knowledge and expertise will certainly be missed. The Clemson University Board of Trustees has contracted with CBRE Hotels’ Americas Research consultants to develop recommendations for the future leadership and direction of the complex. That decision should be made later this fall. During this interim period, Mr. Hank Fonde, Jr., of CBRE Inc., will serve as the interim executive director until a permanent successor is named. Hurricane Tour Volunteers On Monday & Tuesday, July 23 & 24 the Hurricane Junior Tour blows into town with 80+ juniors from around the country to compete on The Walker Course. As always, we are in need of shuttle cart volunteers. If you are able to help for a couple of hours either day, please call the golf shop and we will be glad to give you a short term assignment. These juniors and their parents are always appreciative of the support our Walker Course members and volunteers show each year. Thanks for your help! Lightning Warning System Reminder Back in 2007 The Walker Course became part of the Clemson University Adverse Weather Warning System. When dangerous weather approaches, the University alarm is sounded to warn people to take immediate cover. We do not control when the alarm is sounded, but we do have policies and procedures in place for when it does sound. Obviously, we cannot put our employees in danger by sending them out to warn golfers, so it is imperative that when the alarm is sounded that you vacate the golf course immediately. Once the alarm sounds, we are required to close the golf course, practice areas, and the pool until the warning expires. Please don’t take a chance with this alarm. Heed the warning and come in off the golf course until the warning expires. Your life may depend on it! Bucket List Golf Trip: Monterrey Bay Invitational Have you ever wanted to play Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill, and The Links at Spanish Bay? We have an opportunity to create a bucket list trip to compete in the Monterey Bay Invitational in January of 2019. If you are interested in possibly making this trip, please respond to Brent Jessup as soon as possible. A team of four golfers plus our PGA professional will make a five-man team for this 3-day event. If enough folks are interested, we will put together a package with rates and dates. Don’t miss out on this golden opportunity to play the beautiful Monterey Peninsula courses with your fellow Tigers! Member Guest Pass Cards Again this year, we are providing each membership with one Member Guest Pass Card. Here are a few reminders about using the card:

The card is valid for three guest greens fees between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019. The card may be used on weekdays, with the exception of home football Fridays. The card may also be used after 2pm on weekends except home football weekends. You must play with the guest to use the card. When you present the card, your guest only has to pay for a cart fee. The savings value of this card is approximate $120.00. If you lose your card after August 1, 2018, it will not be replaced.

Please make sure you put this card in a safe place where it will not be lost. If you do not receive your card by July 15 th, call the golf shop

and we will be glad to supply you with a replacement. Member-Member Results Congratulations to Carl Sitler & Jamie Graham for winning the gross division championship of the annual Member-Member. Sitler/Graham shot 66-69 for a 135 total. The format over two days was 18 holes of team best ball and 18 holes of team Texas Scramble. Jerry Handegan & Russ Roark captured the purple/white net division with a 117 total. Mark Boutchard & Stan Childers won the white tee, first division net and Howie Roesch & Bill Banton took the white tee, second division net title. Sixteen teams competed in this year’s championship. Winners of the closest to the pin contests for the weekend were: Hack Tram-mell, Joe Hill, Eddie Brown, Charlie Breece, Ron Shealy, Lonnie Durbin, Mark Boutchard, and Jerry Handegan. Thanks to everyone that played. Good weather, good golf, great fellowship!

DON GARRETT, CGCS SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

SUPERINTENDENTS REPORT July 2018

June Status June is always a busy month. Lots of play, two weeks of golf camp and closing for aerification made it fly by. Af-ter all the rain to end May, the first 3 weeks were very dry. The rain during the last week when we were closed to aerify was a big nuisance, wetting the debris every afternoon and slowing the cleanup process.

Greens We started the aerification process on the greens to give them maximum healing time prior to re-opening. We be-gan on Sunday night and were finished by the end of the day on Monday. We used a 5/8 inch coring tine and topdressed to fill the holes. The greens were then rolled aggressively. Full recovery will take 21-24 days. An application of quick release nitrogen was made 7 days prior to aerification to promote recovery. This fertilizer will provide rapid growth then be gone, allowing us to regain control of the growth rate and the green speed. Following recovery, we will be spoon feeding small quantities of plant food, applying growth regulator and lightly and frequently verticutting, brushing and topdressing. For now we will mow on an every other day basis until we are no longer picking up sand with the reels. We will also be rolling regularly. Fairways We performed an aggressive aerification and verticutting of the fairways. Last year we did not aerate as aggressive as normal nor did we verticut and we paid the price with very fluffy fairways in August and September. As I mentioned above, the mid-afternoon showers really hampered our ability to cleanup. To clean up the debris generated, it is necessary to wait to initiate cleanup when things dry out around mid-day. We received a shower each day Monday through Wednesday which shut down cleanup each time. Rain throughout the day on Thursday kept us from any work. Fortunately, Friday was good and our staff worked until 8:30 that evening to get the course cleaned up and playable for Saturday. Even though we had extra equipment borrowed/rented and extra help lined up, Mother Nature showed us again who is in charge. In the end, we were not able to verticut #11 fairway and did not punch #14, 15 or 16. We hope to get these performed in early July. Tees We had planned to aerate the tees, which were postponed from the rain in May, this week as well but were unable to. They were done the following Monday on July 2. We will be verticutting the tees through the summer to remove thatch that has built up. Early this month, you received an email explaining the poor transition we had on the par 3 overseeded tees. The tees as a whole have improved greatly. However, I felt that #12 orange and purple and #17 purple were not going to recover in a timely manner. Therefore we took the opportunity to resod these tees the week we were closed to aerify. They are com-ing along nicely and should be back in play sometime during the second week of July. We also sodded a portion of the gold tee on #4. Portions of the white tees on #4 and #12 continue to lag but I think they will recover okay. Project Work The project work we had scheduled for the last week of June went well. Bunkers on #1, 7 and 9 were renovated to restore their original shape by removing sand that had been blasted out and built on the face. The liner was replaced to im-prove drainage and appearance, the sand was replaced and Zoysia sod was re-established on the perimeters. It will take a while for the sod to tack down and begin growing so please avoid stepping on the upper face of these bunkers and treat the area as ground under repair. I hope that we can continue to do a few bunkers each year. Two drainage projects were also completed, one at #2 tee where water would stand and the other along #16 cart path where water collected. The installation of the wetland in front of 6 tee will be done in mid-July. July

Doing all this aerification and project work has us a little bit behind on some of our trim work and such, but we will be working hard to catch up on this in early July to prepare for several events at the end of the month including the Club Championship. Spraying mulch beds and weeds in the rough will be a priority. Fence lines, creeks and ponds will be trimmed back as well. Thank You Thank you for your support and understanding as we closed the course the last week of June to perform aerifica-tion and project work. This is something I’ve had on my mind to try and do for several years as I think it benefits all. I be-lieve that performing all the aerification work at once is better than spreading it out over an entire month, and it gives us a chance to have contractors come in and do the project work while there is no play to interfere.
