A family’s celebration of hope In 2012, seven year old Hailee was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a highly malignant primary brain tumor that originates in the cerebellum. During treatment, Hailee’s mom Kandas says that on particularly tough days she and her husband Matt would remind Hailee that after treatment they would be going to Disney World to enjoy Hailee’s wish. Hailee finished treatment in May 2013 and this past fall, a healthy and ecstatic Hailee and family had their Disney adventure in Florida! When asked about the trip, Kandas is hard pressed to pick a favorite memory or experience because they were all so great. She said that the Give Kids the World Village provided the perfect home away from home and Hailee’s younger brother Logan still asks when they can move there! While in Orlando the family explored the Disney parks, Sea World, and met Hailee’s favorite characters. They also visited Discovery Cove for a swim with the dolphins, one of Hailee’s favorite animals. For Kandas and Matt, Hailee’s wish was the perfect opportunity for them to reconnect as a family outside of the hospital, which they had called home for so long. It was also the ultimate celebration of their daughter’s strength and determination and “an amazing experience that let us just be a ‘normal’ family again”. Since returning from her wish trip, Hailee and family have continued to show their support for Children’s Wish. Hailee was one of top fundraisers for the annual Wishmaker Walk for Wishes, raising over $3,000, which will no doubt go a long way toward making another child’s wish come true! Making dreams come true, one pop can at a time For the past 4 years, our building Pop Can Recycling Program has supported the Children’s Wish Foundation, a national non-profit organization dedicated to fulfilling a favorite wish for children diagnosed with life threatening illnesses. Last year almost $35,000 was raised through this recycling program which helped to grant three wishes. The total amount of money we have raised since 2011 is almost $128,650.

• ¼ cup brown sugar

• small pinch of salt

• 1½ tsp fresh cinnamon

Instructions

Take this Energy Quiz.Answers are on page 6

Question 1: Plug loads are one of thefastest growing sources of energyuse in commercial buildings today.

True or False?

Question 2: Plug loads can be reducedby up to 15% through no and low cost

steps such as power managementsettings, advanced power bars and

occupant based strategies.True or False?

Question 3: Computers should beleft on all the time to avoid

wear and increase longevity.True or False?

Question 4: Up to 50% of energyused by a mobile phone comesfrom chargers left plugged in

when not in use.True or False?

Question 5: Screen saversdo not save energy.

True or False?

Livingston Place once again celebrated Annual Environment week in June with “The Great EnergyChallenge”, a campaign to enhance awareness about electrical energy consumption and how smallindividual changes can help the environment by decreasing overall electricity use. We were able totrack each floor’s energy consumption during the week of June 1-5, and to compare it to a previousweek’s daily consumption. We are pleased that so many of our building occupants participated!

The floor that decreased their consumption the most over the course of the week was Veresen onthe 9th floor South Tower, with an average of 3.83% of energy saved.

Here are some ideas for ongoing energy saving in your office:

Turn off…• computer monitors each night before you leave the office. For every LCD monitor that isn’t turned

off nightly we are wasting 22 kWh/month or approximately $29/year; and for every CRT monitor thatisn’t turned off nightly we are wasting 67 kWh/month or approximately $90/year.

• additional monitors when not needed. Extra monitors add to overall electricity consumption, andalso create additional heat load in your office which makes the HVAC system work harder to coolyour space.

• photocopiers, printers, and other large office equipment each night and set themto go into sleep mode when inactive during the day.

• task lighting in your office, including under cabinet lighting when not required.

• televisions and radios within your office.

All base building lighting at Livingston Place is on motion sensors and should turn off automaticallywith 15 minutes of inactivity. If you notice that lights are on when they shouldn’t be, please contactClikFIX at 1-866-254-5349 to report it so that we can ensure the motion sensors are working effectively.

Other ideas include…• Remove all space heaters. Did you know that space heaters use anywhere from 700 to 1700

watts? A blow dryer uses 1200 – 1600. We wouldn’t dream of leaving a blow dryer on for 6 hours ata time because we can “hear” the electricity and we can easily recognize the fire hazard. Yet space heaters are often left on for even longer periods of time. In a recent audit of space heaters in a downtown office building, 249 space heaters were found and 27 of these were left on overnight! Most space heaters are kept under the desk, right next to… you guessed it… the paper recycling bin and/or the fabric partition. Space heaters are such an extreme fire hazard, not to mention a very costly appliance to run. In this same audit it was calculated that these space heaters were costingapproximately $20,000 a year in electricity costs!

• Remove lamps that are not needed. Many lighting systems are over-designed, providing too much light for the task. This is inefficient and can make the working space uncomfortable. In some cases, lamps or whole lighting fixtures can be removed or retrofitted without creating lightingproblems (de-lamping), just be careful not to create uneven lighting in the working environment.

• Buy Energy Star qualified equipment when you replace your office furnishings.

Energy Challenge a lesson in sustainability!

Change up your fitness routine this summer with an outdoor exercise routine. Here are some ideas…

RunningThe Bow River Parkway is located just a few blocks north of Livingston Place, andprovides a variety of routes suited to any level of runner or fast walker. Here aresome tips to ensure you have a safe and effective workout:

• Warm up and cool down before and after your workout.

• Stay hydrated before, during, and after exercise to compensate for water loss through sweat and respiration.

• Wear supportive footwear and watch your step to avoid injury.

• Dress for the elements.

• Pay attention to your surroundings.

• Stretch! Both after exercising and on your “off” days to maintain flexibility andavoid stiff muscles.

• As a general rule, don’t increase your running distances by more than 10% perweek to avoid over training.

BikingAll of the cycle paths to the downtown core area provide plenty of reason to getoutside on your bike for the fun of it and/or to commute to work. Here are a few tipsto enhance your cycling experience:

• When riding in the dark, use lights and wear clothing that will help youstand out.

• Follow pathway signs to avoid unnecessary risks.

• Wear cycling shoes for a more efficient and powerful pedal stroke.

• Wear a helmet as most bike injuries involve head trauma.

• Work on your form - keep your back flat, hips back, shoulder relaxed, and avoid over-gripping the handle bar.

New EquipmentWe have made some changes around the club to enhance your indoor workoutexperience. We have brought new cardio machines and strength cable machines. And we have also rearranged the previous machines to make more space in thestretching area. Ask the fitness staff to help you get acquainted with the newequipment!
