Character Quality for July - Responsibility

To practice responsibility, I will know my duty and do

my duty.

This month, look at your completed tasks through the

eyes of an observer and look for things to add to your

knowledge base of responsible expectations.

The Lawrenceburg Public Library District

is a proud Business of Character.

Summer has arrived at last! It’s time for daycations,

staycations and readcations. Friends volunteers

have filled the shelves with all you might need to

travel to new realms or learn a new game or

discover a tempting recipe.

Come to think of it, Lewis Carroll might be just the

right author for all of the above! He began writing

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland on July 4, 1862,

and as you might know, each of the Alice books are

jam-packed with references to all kinds of tasty –

and not so tasty – food.

Considering that the Friends of the Library Bake

Sale is just months away (Scheduled for the

weekend before Thanksgiving, a food-centric

holiday to be sure), and since there are so many

friends to feed and families to visit during the

summer, here is a recipe for one of the better

known delicacies mentioned in Alice in

Wonderland – Treacle Tart:

Ingredients 1 (9 inch) prepared pie crust pastry 1 cup golden syrup (dark corn syrup can be used) 1/4 cup heavy cream 1 cup bread crumbs 1 lemon, zested 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 tablespoons lemon juice

Directions

Preheat the oven to 375*. Press the pie crust pastry

evenly into the bottom of a 9-inch pie plate.

Mix the syrup, cream, bread crumbs, lemon zest,

and lemon juice together in a bowl until well

blended. Pour mixture into the pie crust.

Bake until the filling is set, 35 to 40 minutes.

Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Reading can connect us to new foods, lots of fun,

and family and friends. Stop by the Friends Book

Sale in either library to find a new favorite recipe,

or get ideas for picnics with children, or learn about

farmers’ markets throughout the region. The titles

on the shelves are always changing, so be sure to

visit often!

And please be sure to drop by the next gathering of

Friends on July 10, 6:30 PM at the

Lawrenceburg Library. There will be

plenty of treacle tarts for everyone!

Our fall meeting is scheduled for

October 9, 6:30 PM at the North

Dearborn Branch.
