The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

When sober, Jeannette's brilliant father

captured his children's imagination,

teaching them physics, geology, and

how to embrace life fearlessly. But

when he drank, he was dishonest and

destructive. Her mother was a free spirit

who hated anything to do with

domesticity. The Walls children learned to take care of

themselves. They fed, clothed, and protected one

another, and eventually found their way to New York.

Their parents followed them, choosing to be homeless

even as their children prospered.

Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly

Before John Glenn orbited the earth,

or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon,

a group of dedicated female

mathematicians known as “human

computers” used pencils, slide rules

and adding machines to calculate the

numbers that would launch rockets,

and astronauts, into space. Hidden Figures is the

phenomenal true story of the black female

mathematicians at NASA whose calculations

helped fuel some of America’s greatest achievements

in space. ~Amazon

From Cool Whip bowls and water bottles to catalogs and

cardboard, most of the stuff that Americans have tossed

in our recycling bins since the 1980s has gone all the

way to China for reprocessing. No more.

Last year, in order to curb their own pollution, China

announced a ban on accepting most of the rest of the

world’s garbage. Since January of this year, much of

what we put in our bins has been piling up, causing

havoc for American waste management companies.

Many companies have been forced to divert what was

previously recycled into landfills.

It’s a very complicated problem with no simple solutions,

although just drinking more tap water is a good

grass-roots start.

All that said, the Friends of the

Library organization will be happy

to divert your magazines and books

from landfills! Just bring them to the

circulation desks at our libraries.

The Friends of the Library resells books and bundles of

magazines for others to enjoy. The Friends donates all

of the proceeds back to the library to help pay for the

many programs described in this newsletter.

Your donations to the Friends of the Library help pay it

forward, so that you never have to pay for a library

program. That’s a pretty good way of recycling, isn’t it?
