President’s Message This month is our Fall Print Competition. This is a time to challenge yourself to put your best work on display to be judged by outsiders. In this club, learning is what we are all about. However, classes are one thing, and a very valuable thing. Print Competition, however, is not just sitting and listening. Print Competition throws you into the arena and places you in a position to use what you are

learning in other venues. Here is where you are tested to verify what you are learning. Here you learn by both triumph and disappointment. Success never grows on its own. Success needs a challenge to grow; it needs occasional disappointment to see its own value. There is no better place to gain this in the world of photography than by entering a print competition or a contest of any sort. In looking at the 12 Elements of a Merit Print, put out by PPA as a guideline and available on our website, realize that at best only one of those elements is objective, and that is Technical Excellence. The rest are subjective and at the interpretation of the judges. Understand this and accept it for what it is. You will learn something from each judge, whether you agree with their scores or not. So regardless of how you do in the competition, get critiques from the judges and listen to what they say, whether you agree or not. Saturday we will be working at the Howell Center. This is a very important and rewarding endeavor. The state requires a new photograph of each resident every year, which is one of the reasons we do it. But also, meeting these folks who are not so fortunate as us gives a perspective into ourselves and makes us more appreciative of what we have and how we live. I urge each of you consider joining us. Don’t be intimidated by what others are doing; be inspired by what others are doing instead.

Meeting Notes September 12, 2015

When submitting an image for competition or just taking great pictures…. by Bob Manning, Club Secretary

…..see, I didn’t want our many beginners and novices to tune me out before reading about the great program Mona Sadler, Master (pet) Photographer from New Bern presented at our October meeting. Here is her checklist of “things that could go wrong when producing a winning image,” along with selected examples from her slide show. Check for sensor dust: shake the

image with your mouse.

Avoid over-sharpening your image. (1a) overdone; (1b) raw image

Crooked horizons: use your straighten key Color banding: add “noise” to smooth them out Out of focus image: improper setting or shaking

camera Bad composition: (2a) boring flower (2b) much more

interesting, apply rule of thirds, flower should look into picture or upward.

Bad posing: (3a)

“snapshot quality” ((3b) show some action, bend the subjects arms and elbows.

Poor skin tones: reduce yellow, add whatever to look more real.

Clone tracking: same shape and size objects in straight line—obviously “copied and pasted.”

Bad choice of mat colors: should not draw attention from subject.

Over retouching: avoid making a real person look TOO perfect.

Too much processing: color saturation, sharpening, etc.

Artifacting: speckles, static, visual effects. Depth of field: setting is too shallow and blurs an

important part of the subject. No originality: (5a) Just another dog; (5b) Now there’s

a cute dog.

Mona Sadler.

No Color Harmony: color contrast too strong, filter w/medium tones.

“It’s just a snapshot”: Too easy, confusing subject.

Too many subjects to look at: (7a) just a bunch of lily pads; the flower adds a center of interest (7b)—note rule of thirds.

Poor Lighting: re-adjust lighting, hold the flash

away from the camera Too much contrast

Hope you got some goods tips out of that. Let me know. Well, what else went on? Simon Lock joined us as a

guest and then a member. Welcome, Simon!

President Tom announced that November is the time we do photos at

the Howell Center. Pictures are used as part of the State requirements. Date to be announced. Help is needed. Tom also emphasized the value in entering the Major Fall Print Competition. “It’s the fastest way to learn how to compete…judges will ‘work you over’….but don’t take it personally,” says Tom…..he has volunteered many times to critique any of your images.

CPC photo booth at Mum Fest supports regional food bank

During Mum Fest in New Bern last month, the Coastal Photo Club continued its tradition of raising funds for the

Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. The club collects donations in exchange for a professional-quality portrait that may be downloaded and printed from a web site. The photo booth was open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on both Saturday and

Sunday during Mum Fest. In total, club members gave approximately 150 hours with planning, set-up, staffing the booth, and editing photos.

“Archie Lewis is the unsung hero of this event with over 40 hours,” said John Steady, event coordinator. “We could not pull this off without him.” Other CPC volunteers included Alan Welch, Tom McCabe, Bob Manning, Chuck

Colucci, Claire Hageman, Helmut Treschan, Janice Arthur, Jeanne Julian, Jim Dugan, Mary O'Neill, Mike Carter, Nancy Donahue, Ravi Sharma, Rosemary Osterhus, Sue Williams, and Wanda Rodriguez.

“We shot 300 photo sittings and raised $1,340 for the Food Bank,” said John. “That was $180 more than last year. The photos look better and better each year—a sign

that our club members are

improving their photography skills along with volunteering for a worthy cause. The photos that I edited took way less than half as long per photo as last year. That is fantastic progress!”

John said that the club is already planning for ways to improve the photo booth next year, so if you have suggestions, let him know.

Works by Evie Chang Henderson hang in Oriental venue

Evie Chang Henderson currently has 24 photos on display at 7 M's restaurant, 205 S. Water St., Oriental. A number of the photos are of hummingbirds in her yard earlier this year. Evie experimented with the use of textures to give the photographs more of a painterly feel—beyond that of documentation. The exhibit will be up through November.

Ed Hall coordinates portrait session for Howell Center residents

One of the CPC’s traditional projects is providing portraits of the residents at the nonprofit RHA Howell Center, a total care center for severely challenged children and adults in River Bend, near New Bern. This year, the shoot will be from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 7.

“As most of you know, this has become a yearly project for our club and has been well accepted and supported by our membership,” said Ed Hall, who coordinates the volunteer effort. “If you have any interest in studio lighting and photography, then this is a really good opportunity to learn about setting up studio lights, metering flash output for correct exposure and shadow on your subject’s face, and so on. You will emerge from this event with a better understanding how to use studio lighting—and a greater appreciation of life.”

Many club volunteers are needed to help with everything, including taking pictures, directing traffic, and helping with setup and take down. “Every volunteer is important and appreciated,” Ed said.

Volunteer Mary Kay© representatives help with sprucing up subjects for their portrait session.

Portrait packages are offered free of charge to the residents and their families. “A very few residents have relatives who visit. For those residents, we will provide an 8x10, two 4x6’s, and some wallet size prints,” Ed said. The Howell Center also uses the “head shots” for administrative purposes.

Contact Ed if you have any questions.

Annual arts journal will include photos by Dawn Damico, Jeanne Julian Two photographs by Dawn Damico will be used in the upcoming County Lines Literary Journal, a publication of the Franklin County [NC] Arts Council. The monochrome photos portray a typewriter and mailbox. “The typewriter was on one of the Club’s ‘rural decay’ field trips,” Dawn said. “The mailbox was from when I was exploring and just pulled over and shot—but it was inspired by the expertise of Chuck Colucci and Rick Meyer. I owe a big thanks to Chuck for

dragging us out into rural North Carolina!” Jeanne Julian also had three images selected for

publication: “Grace,” “My Way, Not the Highway,” and “Pear Trees in March.” County Lines 2016 Reading and Book Launch Party will be Thursday, December 10th at

Vance Granville Community College's Louisburg campus. Winners of the FCAC Writers’ Guild Carolina Prize and the County Lines Cover Art Award will be announced during the evening. It is a free event.

New member profiles Simon Lock

Over 40 years ago, Simon Lock traveled through Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala, the fascinating scenery and cultures there fueling his interest in photography. However, that fuel didn’t catch fire until decades later. In 2013, Simon plunged into digital photography and hasn’t looked back. You can see examples of his work at http://sixlegswilltravel.com, and he has

plans to develop his own photography web site. He’d also like to improve his eye for composition and

his facility with post-processing. He currently relies on Lightroom for that, and shoots with a Canon Rebel t3i equipped with a Tamron 18-270mm zoom or a Canon 10-18mm wide angle lens.

The influence of that long-ago travel experience stayed with him. He counts travel as among his favorite experiences, and has an extensive wish-list of ideal photography destinations: Cuba, Croatia, Europe, Thailand, New Zealand, Australia—“etcetera, etcetera,” he adds. A

“Letters from the Past” was one of two photographs by Dawn Damico selected for publication in a regional arts journal.

“Words That Last” by Dawn Damico.

sailor and boater, his nautical side leads him to find working harbors and their watercraft as a compelling subject, also.

Simon shares his interests in subject matter with many other CPC members, especially a predilection for the transitory, such as historical buildings, old doors and old wood (“rural decay,” anyone?), and “the blue hour.” In fact, he’d like to join any CPC field trips that include disused industrial sites, or historical districts like that in Little Washington. He also enjoys shooting street scenes, landscapes, and night photography.

Sandy Ralston “My Dad was an amateur nature photographer in

Vermont, with his own darkroom,” said Sandy Ralston. “He died when I was 11, leaving behind his equipment. While in high school I began playing with his cameras and that led to a lifetime of…still playing. I loved watching images appear like magic.”

That’s not the only “playing” Sandy does. She also plays the bassoon with more than one regional ensemble, and enjoys playing in the garden—she’s an active garden club member, in charge of its newsletter.

She sees the CPC as a helpful resource as she pursues her inherited interest.

“I look forward to learning most anything,” she said. “Cliff did a fabulous presentation on textures. I hope to incorporate that technique into some of my shots.”

She’s currently experiencing a steep learning curve with her new Sony system. She traded in a Nikon system for Sony’s alpha 7, with a Zeiss 24-70 and Sony’s G lens – 70-200. “Any expertise would be greatly appreciated!” she said.

After living also in Ohio and Indiana, Sandy still loves shooting in Vermont, but realizes that the logistics of a CPC field trip to New England would not be simple!

In addition to the nature photography her father loved, another of Sandy’s specialties is portraiture. She has maintained a studio setup for about 10 years. “It’s just an

Alien Bee set with some extras, but I need more help to improve my techniques. Reading books and online classes only go so far,” Sandy said. “I would love to become more creative with lighting and with posing. I love making folks look good…with a bit of Photoshop editing.”

Mother of two grown children and grandmother of six, Sandy might be able to recruit many practice models from her own family.

Competition Update October mini competition results

The October mini-comp’s theme was “slow shutter speed

to show movement.” See page 12 for images.

October Winners:

Monochrome: Tom McCabe, “Looking Glass Falls”

Color: Tom McCabe, “Among the Falls”

Digital manipulation: Jim Starr, “Bilateral Symmetry”

November: major competition All club members in good standing are encouraged to

enter the major competition in November. This twice-yearly competition offers everyone a chance to see how experts—a professional photographer and an artist in another medium—evaluate photographic images. Remember: you don’t have to consider yourself an expert to enter and enjoy this competition. You can learn from the judges’ comments as well as enjoy a fine display of photos that your fellow club members consider their best work.

The major competitions have slightly different rules from the monthly mini-competitions. For instance, there is no “theme;” prints must be mounted; there are two levels for entries, Intermediate and Advanced; and you may enter three prints in each of the three categories (monochrome, color, and digital manipulation) for a maximum of nine prints. Make sure you visit the CPC web site to familiarize yourself with ALL of the major competition rules before you prepare your prints.

Overnight Field Trip: The Eastern Shore January 15-17, 2016

Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, Maryland Geese, swans and ducks are present in the marsh along with hawks, great blue herons, and a few species of shorebirds. Mid-winter observations are best during thaws. Eagles, both bald and golden, are sometimes conspicuous along the Wildlife Drive. Great horned owls are incubating eggs while bald eagles are rebuilding their nests high in loblolly pine trees.

Assateague Island National Seashore Shorebirds by the tens of thousands depend upon the island’s protected foraging and resting areas during their twice-yearly transcontinental migrations. Each fall, large flocks of waterfowl such as snow geese begin arriving at Assateague where they will spend the winter traveling between the sheltered bay and salt marshes and fallow farm fields on the mainland. While Assateague’s wild horses are perhaps the island’s best-known inhabitants, other large mammals also roam the park, grazing and browsing on low-lying vegetation. These include the white-tailed deer and the non-native sika deer, a diminutive species of Asian elk introduced to Assateague during the 1920’s. Numerous invertebrates such as fiddler crabs play key roles in maintaining the health of the island’s salt marshes. Even the seemingly barren beaches provide habitat for nocturnal ghost crabs, red fox, and raccoons.

The Choptank River According to photographer/blogger Carole Sevilla Brown, “The Cambridge waterfront along the Choptank River near Cambridge, Maryland is one of the premier destinations for birders to see a wide variety of wintering ducks in huge flocks and at close view.” Moreover, the Choptank River was one of the primary routes of the Underground Railroad. There’s a driving tour that shows the major stops and other places of historical significance to the Underground Railroad in Dorchester County.

Quote of the Month “Every image is in some way a ‘portrait,’

not in the way that it would reproduce the traits of a person, but in that it pulls and draws (this in the semantic and etymological sense

of the word), in that it extracts something, an intimacy, a force. ~Sally Mann
