Martin Carnoy* “In many ways, particularly when compared with traditional European universities, the professor–student contact at UOC is probably more intensive and more direct, despite its virtual nature. Student success depends even more than in traditional universities on self–discipline and self–direction.”

Tony Bates* “The UOC itself of course is a knowledge–based organisation and therefore must continually adapt and re–invent itself. In other words, the UOC must create an organisation where innovation is encouraged and where established habits, technologies and methods of working are constantly reviewed and changed where necessary.”

Sir Timothy Berners-Lee* “So the Web, if you have to understand why… not just

browse the Web, but understand the Web, understand how it works, then you have

to think of the Web as being the Web of people: the people that make links, the people

that write, the people that follow links, the people that read. And, of course, understanding

people is a far step from what they teach you in Computer Science.” *Founder and Director of the World Wide Web Consortium. Doctor honoris causa

Alfonso Vegara* “While mobility of people, capital, goods and services is accelerating without precedent throughout the world, only cities of the highest quality will be able to attract, retain and nurture world class talent. Their environment has to meet the challenge of global attractiveness, which entails mixing and layering different uses, creating spaces which facilitate the symbiosis between business ecologies and urban life where living, working, playing and learning coexist with ease.”
