Hawaii is Asian. There’s Asian food, Asian culture, Asian people. In fact, my wife (who is ethically Korean but originally from Russia) chose to live in Honolulu, Hawaii so her kids could grow up in an environment that’s more tolerant towards Asians. Having lived in Japan for several years before moving to Hawaii, I felt right at home when I arrived in Honolulu.

One of the things I enjoy most about Hawaii is the wide range of martial arts instruction. Whether it’s taekwondo, karate, judo or MMA, chances are there are several martial arts schools in Hawaii for you. Most people live in Honolulu, so it’s not surprising that you’ll find the majority of martial arts schools in Honolulu. What should you look for when considering a martial arts school? Well, the first thing you should do is visit the school. Get a feel for the place. Is it clean? Are the students attentive? Is the vibe good? How are the instructors? Are they knowledgeable? And dynamic?

The best martial arts school generally have 3 things in common: The students are sweating, they are smiling, and they are learning something useful. Once you’ve narrowed your list of potential martial arts schools, take a few trial lessons. Is the school easy to get to? Is the class schedule convenient? Do you feel welcomed? Embarking on your martial arts training is no trial thing. Take your time. Try a few places. Find your ‘home.’ You’ll never regret it.
