Former Owasso teacher must face trial on sexual batterycharge

A now-resigned Owasso High School teacher must face trial on an allegation that he sexually battered a student, a judge ruled Thursday.At a preliminary hearing, Tulsa County Special Judge David Youll ordered Doug Woolery bound over on a felony charge of sexualbattery involving an Owasso High student who was 17 at the time of the alleged offense in January 2008.

The student, now 18, said he and Woolery stayed in the same room at the downtownCrowne Plaza Hotel during a music convention in Tulsa.

He said he did not want any of this to happen and did not initiate anything, but heindicated that he did not say no and did not tell Woolery to get off him.

On Woolerys behalf, defense attorney Joseph Norwood said after the hearing that wewould dispute any type of allegation that there was not consent.

A Tulsa police affidavit, filed when Woolery was charged Feb. 24, states that the teenagerreported that Woolerys actions were unwanted and unsolicited and he was in shock anddid not know what to do since the defendant was one of his instructors.

On March 9, the Owasso school board accepted the resignation of Woolery, 39, who taughtvocal music and stagecraft and managed the schools Performing Arts Center. He had beensuspended in February after the accusations surfaced.

In Oklahoma County, Woolery was charged March 10 with forcible sodomy and sexual battery based on allegations by the same student.

According to a police affidavit, the teenager reported that while at a music convention in Oklahoma City in January 2008 a weekbefore the Tulsa convention he and Woolery shared a hotel room where those offenses are alleged to have occurred.

Woolery has posted bonds in both cases.
