The UNOLS Fleet Improvement Committee (FIC) hosted aTown Hall at the Ocean Sciences Meeting that wasfocused on planning for future Global Class researchvessels FIC works to assure that the number mix andoverall capability of ships in the Academic Research Fleet(ARF) match the science requirements ofacademic oceanography in the US In this contextplanning for a new vessel involves creating a ldquoScienceMission Requirementsrdquo (SMRs) document that describesthe vesselrsquos size performance capabilities and facilitieswhich then becomes the blueprint to seek funding fordetailed planning and eventually construction Based oncurrent science programs and future projectionsand considering the age and capabilities of the currentfleet the FIC is currently developing a SMR for the nextGlobal Class general-purpose research ship
As part of the SMR development process FIC is engagingthe science community through surveys and otherforums to gather professional opinions and suggestionson the capabilities that will be needed to support futureresearch operations aboard the Global ships The TownHall was well attended and provided the FIC with a first-hand opportunity to inform the members of theoceanographic community about the SMR project and toalso gather their feedback Progress on the SMRdocument will be reported in the coming months

Participating in a research cruise is a scientific adventureand may often be the chance of a lifetime The UNOLSCruise Opportunity Program strives to match enthusiasticgraduate students with available berths aboard UNOLSvessels The selected students would participate in data
collection and at-sea science familiarizing them withocean-based research
Currently three cruise opportunities are available eachoffering up to two berth spaces for volunteer graduatestudents Two cruises have an application deadline of July1 the first aboard RV Oceanus is traveling to theBering Sea out of Nome AK the second aboard RV NeilArmstrong is heading to the southern tip of Greenlandfrom Reykjavik Iceland The third cruises is out ofNarragansett RI aboard the RV Endeavor and has anapplication deadline of July 31 For more information andapplication instructions click here
