Dear Friends,

An energy radiates at Woods Services as you move through our residences and day programs. The individuals we serve are growing, learning, and living well with the support of a dedicated and compassionate staff. We cheer the successes of individuals, some of them major like Maddy and Val who you will read about in this report, but more are small incremental steps taken toward greater independence.

We also celebrated organizational successes in fiscal year 2015, which included the opening and dedication of the Stabler NeuroRehab Center with a keynote address given by The Honorable Patrick J. Kennedy. The renovated and expanded space has enabled us to open a Clubhouse for individuals who have acquired brain injuries, one of 17 in the United States in which persons with brain injuries can participate in group activities that help them build their skills to prepare them for community employment. In addition, Beechwood NeuroRehab was awarded a contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for its Assisted Living Program for Veterans with Traumatic Brain Injury.

Our day programs are an area of growth for Woods. Including our schools, employment alternatives, and the Clubhouse, we increased day program enrollment by 61 percent from 2014 to 2015. We also increased employment opportunities for the people we serve by opening a kiosk at the Oxford Valley Mall where the individuals we serve sell crafts and floral arrangements for our Yellow Daffodil Flower Shop. In addition, we opened the Common Grounds Café in our former Woodlands Education Center where one can purchase coffee, snacks and lunch Monday through Friday from 7 am-4 pm. Both provide many different skill development opportunities from retail sales to inventory to food preparation. All lead to community employment possibilities.

From the days of Mollie’s founding, to the present, we have helped people with exceptional needs unlock their potential, experience the joys of achievement, and live meaningful and fulfilling lives. We are grateful for the extraordinary support we receive from family, friends, businesses and foundations who partner with us to guarantee that we can continue to honor the ideals set forth by Mollie Woods. Thank you especially to our staff who form the core of our programs. Their dedication, in conjunction with participation from many family and friends, ensures that individuals with disabilities will have opportunities and choices that lead to growth and personal fulfillment. Thanks once again for all of your support.

Sincerely,

Scott Spreat, Ed.D.President and CEO

A Message from Our President.

Woods Services has earned a national reputation for the compassionate, quality supports it provides for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We assist people with special needs in unlocking their potential, discovering their talents, and learning skills that help them live as independently as possible and enjoy fulfilling and rewarding lives.

We were founded more than a century ago by visionary Mollie Woods with two simple goals — to advance the quality of life and standard of care for individuals with disabilities. She gained international recognition for her groundbreaking work in helping children with exceptional needs experience the joy of achievement and lead fulfilling lives.

Today, we’ve broadened her mission to serve people of all ages and levels of care with a unique model that empowers them to set and achieve ambitious goals. Our model relies on the strength of our highly trained, highly motivated, and extremely dedicated team of clinicians, educators and counselors who work in partnership with the people we serve to develop and implement highly individualized support plans that are as unique as they are.

Like most human service organizations, we’ve experienced challenges as funding resources dwindle and demands for services increase. Despite these difficulties, Woods Services remains in a strong financial position enabling us to stay focused on our commitment to the people we serve. We will continue to innovate and find solutions to help individuals with disabilities unlock their potential and realize their dreams.

A warm July day greeted a then 14 year-old Val as he arrived at Woods in a padded van accompanied by his father and a behaviorist. Val’s actions prevented him from being transported any other way as he would kick out the windows. Those and other behaviors kept him from participating in daily life activities as he usually hurt himself or others. Even with the most intensive supports, school became a place of continual crisis.

Jani and Lenny Sblendorio, Val’s parents, arrived with unsettled certainty as they accepted their decision to make a journey of the heart more than 100 miles from the their home in Wayne, New Jersey to Woods in Langhorne, PA. Could Woods unlock the power of thought that they hoped their son with autism capable? Would he be safe?

While their expectations of Woods were high, what has transpired has exceeded their wildest hopes and dreams for Val, and frankly, for them as well. As a result of intensive teamwork in his first year, his aggressive behaviors decreased significantly, he became curious about his surroundings, his communication improved and a loving personality started to blossom.

The staff assigned to work with Val played a significant role in his improvement. His team comprised the following: two direct care staff members, Tony Balter and Marcelle Goode; teacher Denise Tholey;

Program Specialist Chris Jowett; Clinician Kim Schreffler; Clinical Director Constance Grant; Residential Manager Richard Reid, and Education Director Terry Czarkowski. While Val’s parents and his team met weekly to set goals, it was the direct care staff who were with him continually and gained his trust who have helped him become a loving, interesting young man.

In general, teams meet as frequently as is needed, but not as often as Val’s. This extraordinary group met each week to discuss his progress and to establish the next goal to work toward. Some weeks, the same goal remained on the table and different strategies were developed to help him achieve it. Over the first few weeks, Val was able to walk to school where a special classroom was set up for him. The duration of time spent in a chair in the classroom increased over time, gradually other students were introduced into the room, and now Val takes part in lessons spending a full day actively participating in school.

No longer isolated, Val is now a recognized and well-loved resident of Woods. He lives a life beyond confused existence, and interacts, understands and learns from his friends, each one with their own special gifts and needs. To the delight of all, Val now has a limited, yet growing, sight word vocabulary, and looks for new experiences.

Jani and Lenny believe that, “This type of collaboration over the years is unmatched and cannot be duplicated. Where else is there such a detailed database of how interventions work or do not work in multiple environments? This would NEVER be duplicated outside of Woods despite our intensive efforts.” The progress is clear, “Our son had zero friends and he is now the mini Mayor of Woods. His safety needs are met without hindering him from new experiences. Val has opportunities for enrichment at all times.”

The Sblendorios recognize that the sacrifice and challenge they met more than six years ago now affords a new life for their family - a life that they had not envisioned, or even thought attainable. Holidays and weekends are spent with Val at Woods Services. While Val is their only child, they lovingly open their hearts to ALL of their Woods family. “Thank you Woods Services, we are so grateful to you and your team, and are proud to walk arm and arm as we go through our journey with autism together.”

Maddy had a few problems before coming to Woods. Her most significant challenge was controlling her anger, which led to violent rages and threatening behavior. Frankly, our staff had never seen such extreme outbursts and had reservations about admitting her. However, they felt that they could make a difference in her life through support that would empower her to make the changes necessary to enable her to return home to her family.

In just a little more than two years of treatment, Maddy’s life has changed forever. Madelina E. Kubasta, age 17, was honored in November by the Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce for her leadership in the UNLESS initiative championed by the Philadelphia Zoo. The UNLESS project is an effort to raise awareness of the harmful effects on the natural habitats of many endangered species by the proliferation of palm oil, pulp and paper plantations. Most affected by this tragedy are the orangutan and Sumatran tiger through unsustainable farming and deforestation in the world’s rain forests.

Maddy immersed herself in this initiative through the encouragement of her clinician, Dr. Constance Grant, who correctly predicted that Maddy would empathize with the suffering animals. Maddy’s leadership of the palm oil initiative in school has been pivotal in her overall treatment.

Living so far from her home and family in Washington State, Maddy easily related to the displacement of the orangutans from their rainforest homes. Their plight motivated her to become an advocate, share their story and promote environmental conservation for orangutans and other endangered wildlife.

The influence and impact of this mission has bolstered Maddy’s self-esteem. She now values her ability to make a tangible difference in the world. Maddy’s 360 degree life turnaround in just two years is one of the most significant we’ve experienced. Our staff believes that championing this cause became part of her therapy aimed at learning, developing, and nurturing positive behaviors. Maddy now has self-confidence and dreams for her future!

Maddy says she is most grateful to her grandfather and mother for finding Woods Services, which she calls “a blessing.” She has big plans for her future. Inspired by her grandmother, who once owned a floral shop, Maddy expects to return to her Washington home and pursue a career in floral design. In preparation for this career, you may have seen her captivating smile at our own Yellow Daffodil Flower Store. Our staff at Woods believes that Maddy is their “blessing” because she has taught them about perseverance, hope, and joy. Her wish is that all animals can have a home that is their natural place in the world just as she will go home to hers.

Woods traveled back in time to the Roaring Twenties for the HOLLYWoods Gala, which was held on January 17, 2015, at the Hyatt Bellevue in Philadelphia. The theme for the night was The Great Gatsby and the red carpet gave attendees a chance to show off their fringe, fedoras, and feathers.

The second annual gala raised more than $227,000 overall, including $55,550 during a special video appeal to raise funds to facilitate travel home for individuals living at Woods. NBC10 Reporter Jim Rosenfield served as the gala emcee and attendees enjoyed live entertainment from Joshua Pensinger, a young man living at Woods, Marlana VanHoose, a young woman from Kentucky who is visually impaired and diagnosed with cerebral palsy, and the Mood Swings Big Band.

EXCEPTIONAL PEOPLE. | FULFILLING LIVES.2015 Woods Services Annual Report | Unlocking potential.

More than 950 people came to Woods on May 2, 2015, to kick off the inaugural Run for Woods 5K and Fitness Fair. The Run/Walk/Roll event drew participants from the community, as well as friends, family, and residents of Woods, and raised more than $227,000, mostly through sponsorships and donations. The money raised helps Woods Services prepare individuals for work and life in the community and offers opportunities for social experiences.

Nearly 550 participants competed in a timed 5K race, which took them through Woods’ campus as well as historic Langhorne, while the remainder stayed at Woods for a leisurely 1-mile fun walk. The event served as a great way to engage the local community in the camaraderie of Woods, as Langhorne residents cheered on participants from their homes and businesses.

But the fun didn’t stop there! After medals and prizes were awarded, all participants were treated to a BBQ lunch, live entertainment, and a fitness fair. Preparations are well under way for our second annual Run for Woods 5K Run/Walk/Roll, which will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2016.
