The Wave
Hello Everyone, This has been a wonderful year for University Women of Flagler! As we do every year, we hosted fun activities, read some great books, and learned a lot about happen-ings in our community. However, this year was special because we also celebrated our tenth anniversary, com-memorating our decennial with a brief program at the beginning of our monthly meetings. It was very interest-ing to hear how UWF has evolved over time.

From the President
One of the highlights of the year was to receive recognition from our three local governing bodies. Each issued a proclamation extolling UWF’s service to the community. We are grateful and proud of this three-fold recognition. On a personal note, I extend my heartfelt thanks to all of you for working diligently through-out the year. We received this honor because of our combined efforts and dedication to lifting the Flagler community. Also, this year, we decided to establish a scholarship for a non-traditional student. Jane Mealy chaired our first meeting in which we began the important work of determining the parameters we will use to select our winning student(s). Our goal is to provide resources for someone who needs funds to get training or a degree that will help her improve her life. We are just starting this process and there is still much important work to be done. However, we are pleased that we are moving in a direction that will allow us to assist someone in a way that we have not done before. Finally, make sure you have saved the date! Our culminating event, the scholarship luncheon, will be held Saturday, May 20 at 11a.m. This is what we work all year to do – provide scholarships to deserving young women. As usual, the scholarship committee has selected outstanding students. This is our oppor-tunity to meet them and hear their plans for the future. Each recipient will receive a scholarship of three thousand dollars ($3,000) and is required to attend the luncheon. Hopefully, you will be able to attend this celebratory event. You don’t want to miss this one! See you in a few weeks. Barbara Holley, Ed.D. President

May Bookminders Selection
Soon to be an HBO series, book one in the New York Times bestsel-ling Neapolitan quartet about two friends growing up in post-war Ita-ly is a rich, intense, and generous-hearted family epic by Italy’s most beloved and acclaimed writer, Elena Ferrante, “one of the great nov-elists of our time.” (Roxana Robinson, The New York Times) Beginning in the 1950s in a poor but vibrant neighborhood on the outskirts of Naples, Ferrante’s four-volume story spans almost sixty years, as its protagonists, the fiery and unforgettable Lila, and the bookish narrator, Elena, become women, wives, mothers, and lead-ers, all the while maintaining a complex and at times conflictual friendship. Book one in the series follows Lila and Elena from their first fateful meeting as ten-year-olds through their school years and adolescence. Through the lives of these two women, Ferrante tells the story of a neighborhood, a city, and a country as it is transformed in ways that, in turn, also transform the relationship between her protagonists. “An intoxicatingly furious portrait of enmeshed friends,” writes Entertainment Weekly. “Spectacular,” says Maureen Corrigan on NPR’s Fresh Air. “A large, captivating, amiably peopled bildungsroman,” writes James Wood in The New Yorker Ferrante is one of the world’s great storytellers. With My Brilliant Friend she has given her readers an abundant, generous, and masterfully plotted page-turner that is also a stylish work of literary fiction destined to delight readers for many generations to come.
