Technology in BBC

The Future Media division is responsible for all of the BBC’s digital media services.

BBC Future Media is the driving force behind the BBC’s digital media proposition. We design, develop and run digital services and products. Our aim is to allow audiences to enjoy the BBC’s best content via their preferred route, whether that’s online, tablet, mobile, or through internet-connected TV.

Last year BBC Online reached a record 43 million average weekly unique browsers in February.

Last year BBC iPlayer programme requests reached 191.7 million in the month of February – the highest ever.

There have been 1.2 billion podcast downloads worldwide since the service began five years ago.

Our Give an Hour campaign, promoting media literacy, prompted 1.3 million people to get involved.

Our digital services are available on all digital platforms – desktop, mobile, tablet and connected TV – driven by recent innovations. The unique characteristics of each of these devices allow us to create outstanding experiences for our audiences that meet different needs – wherever they are and whatever they are doing. This was reflected in our growing reach figures, which peaked at 43 million average weekly unique browsers in February this year.

As the digital media landscape evolves there are a growing number of ways to reach audiences. Our content was available on over 500 different models from 37 different manufacturers in the UK last year, through partnerships with major providers including Virgin, Xbox and Apple. These partnerships underpin our commitment to universal availability and accessibility.

Future Media has a key role in the 2011 Connected Strategy for BBC Online, which can be summarised by the idea of 1-10-4:

• 1 service to the licence fee payer

• 10 audience facing products

• 4 platforms (mobile, tablet, desktop and connected TV)

How will it work?

• You will operate in equally sized teams, each representing an IT development organisation.

• Your team will prepare a detailed Proposal document for a prescribed IT development. That proposal will include a prototype of the User Interface and a supporting Plan & Estimate document outlining the costs, resourcing model, schedule and risks.

• Initial planning will take place at Barclays Technology Centre Radbroke on 30th October. Assigned Mentors will support you in planning the task on the day.

• Full preparation of the proposal will take place over the next three weeks.

• You have access to a further three hours of mentoring over the period and you may arrange to do this via telephone conference or face-to-face meet up if feasible.

• If there is more than one team attending from your University, you will be invited to an internal presentation assessment by your tutors at some point between day 14 and day 21. Your University will select one team to go forward to the finals.

• One team from each University will attend the finals presentations on 21st November. These will be held at the BBC’s premises at MediaCity, Salford Quays. Joining instructions will be provided nearer the time.

• At the finals day, you will be invited to present your proposal to the “Project Panel” – a team of business and technology professionals.

• Feedback on the proposal and presentation will be provided, along with feedback on how the team has performed over the three weeks.

• A winning team will be confirmed with each member of the winning team receiving £50 Amazon Vouchers, PLUS access to some money can’t buy opportunities, including mentoring, work experience and the possibility of a fast-track application to a paid 2014 summer internship at Barclays global technology centre in Knutsford – a 12 week contract worth over £5000 each.’1

1 Each applicant would be guaranteed an interview but would need to successfully complete an interview and all recruitment checks required by law to undertake the role.

The Technology Challenge Brief

Knowledge and Learning (“K&L”) is the BBC product that makes learning feel effortless and playful because it wakes & sustains our audience’s natural curiosity with innovative guides & tools built around world-class BBC content.

K&L mission is to keep Britain curious, so that people can learn something new every day, without having to break their routine. We aim to unlock the learning potential in every piece of BBC content, whether it’s revision guides for students, or immersive activities aimed at the enthusiasts.

Examples of the World Class content produced by K&L:

K&L is midway through transforming its student and teachers offering through reinventing Bitesize and the portfolio of web sites supporting the education space.

The release of the Curriculum beta (www.bbc.co.uk/education) draws together rich content for student and teachers into one responsive web site.

Curriculum Product team has an exciting product roadmap over the next 12 months that includes launching the new K&L brand and a host of additional functionality that will delight students and teachers.

To build on this great experience the Curriculum Product team would like to create a more personalised and meaningful learning experience for students and teachers through matching the best content on a particular subject.

Your proposal must include: (a) A prototype of your proposed web based solution for Knowledge & Learning(b) A proposal or tender for you to deliver this solution into operation

Your allocated budget is £400,000 (+/-30%) plus ongoing operational costs which should be provided in your proposal.

Design Principles

The following design principles underpin the BBCs ethos of delivering great content for our audiences:

1. It should be consistent with look & feel of the www.bbc.co.uk/education site2. It should be simple and intuitive to navigate by the target age group with

limited or no assistance3. Serendipitous discovery of related content should be encouraged4. Avoid the temptation to simply show what the user has done or where they

have been. Focus instead should be placed on where next.5. Be friendly, and human in the tone of voice of any copy the site uses.6. Remember that this service would be just a small part of an otherwise rich

and multifaceted learning experience. Think about how this service might connect up with the way they learn at home, or at work.

Some technical principles:

• Responsive web browser based solution• Device Agnostic operating on at least the following devices:o Kindleo iPhoneo iPado Android phoneo Android tableto Windows PCo Windows Tableto Windows Phoneo Blackberry• Standards compliant web content that operates on at least the browsers:o Chromeo Firefoxo Internet Explorer 8 or highero Safari

The Project Management Institute

This challenge is supported by the Project Management Institute (PMI) who advocate the development of Project Management skills, such as those learned during this challenge, as important life skills that will support you as you prepare for future employment.

The PMI is a not-for-profit Project Management Association run by passionate volunteers.

For a very low annual fee (compared to standard membership) you can gain PMI UK Student membership. The cost is just $32 USD and this will allow you access to all the benefits of standard membership which includes excellent networking opportunities and free attendance at regional Professional Development events – there was one hosted during October at Barclays Technology Centre Radbroke for instance.

To join visit www.pmi.org. You will need to join the PMI (for which the small fee applies) and then join the PMI UK Chapter for which there is no charge for students.

The lead of the North West PMI committee is Jon Clay ([email protected]). Contact Jon to discuss this further.
