great school year emerges week by week, season by season. So it was with 2012-2013school year at University School, where the little things combined to make the big things

possible. In academics, in athletics, in the arts, and inour community partnerships, our pursuit of excellencegenerated a year to remember, and this slim volumechronicles the highlights. We are a school of the mo-ment, set in a singular history, finding opportunitiesin a dynamic educational era.

Our attention turned to international opportunities,some quite new and others of longer vintage. In thesame year, we honored twenty-five years of part-nership with Kwansei Gakuin School in Nishinomiya,Japan by sending a delegation of students and faculty, also visiting Nashville’s sister city as part of the itinerary. We welcomed a delegation from ourLegion of Honor partner school in Paris, and we confirmed two new partner schools outside Shang-hai. Then, this summer, we accepted an invitationfrom Lakeside School in Seattle to join thirteen otherschools in starting a semester program in Peru. The world continues to open to USN.

The virtual world of distance learning produced another landmark event for us, as University Schooljoined eleven other schools and Stanford University tofound the Malone School Online Network, the firstreal-time interactive set of courses available to highschool students in this country. This fall our first offer-ing, in advanced mathematics topics, goes live.Meanwhile, our 1,051 students K-12 grow and learnmuch as their predecessors here always have, curiousand creative as they always have been, in programsthat last year produced a girls’ state championshipin soccer and two national qualifier pairs in debate.

What underwrites progress on all these fronts is thecontinued generosity of a supportive and interestedcommunity—alumni, parents, grandparents, friends.To bring those constituencies together in commoncause takes volunteer leadership of the highestorder. Our gratitude extends to Holly and Steve

Roche, overall parent chairs, who with their lower,middle and high school chairs Amy Shepard, JaneGroos, and Kathy Pennington reached hundreds ofhouseholds.

Laura and Brad Currie chaired leadership giving,Nicole Dunigan chaired outreach to new parents,and Board veteran Grace Awh rallied our 13 yearfamilies, parents of soon-to-be alumni. Together weraised a record $1.2MM in unrestricted dollars todo the work of supporting budgets on all fronts,work that the endowment we continue to build willdo one day.

On the leadership front, 2012-13 also brought tocompletion the impressive and historic three-yearterm of Gail Williams as Board President. Her gen-erosity of spirit, her interest in every member of theUSN community, and her capacity to encourageeveryone, every day, in every way brings us to thebrink of our Centennial from a position of strength.One powerful legacy of her service will be USN’sselection as a Horizons National site for summer academic enrichment work with students from ourneighborhood elementary school, Carter-Lawrence.

We continue to plan for the 100th birthday, now justone Annual Report away, of this remarkable school.To celebrate, we’ll do our part to restore and refur-bish the great old Demonstration School building,still the center of our campus. We will encourageand support innovation in our classrooms, keepingstudents and teachers first as our priority. We willbuild the financial foundation for another century,and we will appreciate every dollar from everydonor. Our mission to model the best in educationstands the test of time, as does our promise to dosomething of wider importance in our work togetheron Edgehill Avenue.

In fiscal year 2013, July 1, 2012 –June 30, 2013, philanthropic supporthelped USN continue its commitment toacademic excellence and innovation.USN raised annual gifts (unrestricted and restricted), endowment, and capitalfunds to support the school, its facultyand students. Annual gifts provide acritical 6% of USN’s operating budget,as well as funding for specific programand departmental needs. Capital giftsmake possible facility renovations andupgrades, and endowment support secures the future and USN’s continuedexcellence.

have had an extraordinary three years as yourBoard President, culminating with the opportunityin May to present my son Nick with his USN highschool diploma. What a thrill that was!

Last year the Board of Trustees did great work. Theircareful planning for the future is evident whereveryou are in the school. Thank you to this Board, whosecommitment and dedication to USN is unparalleled.My thanks also extend to our Director, Vince Durnan,for his impeccable leadership and finally to the entireUSN community for all of their contributions. Finally,to all of you, our Board, Vince, faculty, staff, studentsand parents, thank you for allowing me this tremen-dous opportunity to lead and to be fulfilled as Presi-dent of this Board of Trustees for the past threeyears. It has been an incredible journey.

I am delighted to share with the University School ofNashville community the great successes of last year.Our Annual Fund continues to grow along with ournew commitments, as these pages show. As you know,these gifts give our students, teachers, and adminis-trators an opportunity to stretch and explore. Theyprovide the latest and greatest educational tools forour wonderful students: a new distance learning initia-tive with the Malone Schools Network, new interna-tional partnerships and opportunities in China andPeru, ways to perfect their athletic skills or find inno-vative ways to explore their art.

Ultimately all of these philanthropic efforts have oneaim: to benefit our students and to help them achieveexcellence. We are grateful for the leadership of lastyear’s Annual Fund parent chairs, Holly and SteveRoche and to this year’s chairs Laura and Brad Currie.

This philanthropy supports our 100 year history of“Innovation and Excellence since 1915.”

Speaking of our century-long story, plans continue todevelop for the celebration of our 2015 CentennialCelebration, chaired by Board Member and alumnaTeri Doochin Kasselberg ’73. Exciting plans are com-ing together under her leadership for a celebration ofUSN as we know it now and of our predecessorPeabody Demonstration School (PDS). So many ofyou have provided facts and stories about our schooland shared great ideas as to how we can best cele-brate our unique history. Just keep the stories andideas coming. Our Centennial will reflect PDS/USN’srich history and our respect and admiration for it.

As we greet this year with all of the promise and ex-citement a new year brings, please welcome our newBoard President, David Kloeppel. David will provideour school with effective board leadership and visionthat will only make this school better and brighter. Our community is fortunate to have David in this roleat such an important time in PDS/USN history.

25 Years of Giving | The George Peabody Society

eorge Peabody is in some ways our founding father. Without his generosity in the nine-teenth century, the Demonstration School that bore his name could never have come intobeing. The Peabody Education Fund endowed the George Peabody College for Teachers,the parent institution of our predecessor school.

Our George Peabody Society honors those who have made USN a philanthropic priority for at least a quarter of a century. The list includes alumni, parents of alumni, and current parents,nineteen families in 2012-2013.

That’s eight more than last year. New names on the list include a retired middle school Englishteacher, Alys Venable (who’s also the mother of Carol ’91) and a stalwart of the college coun-seling program, Karen Roberts (mother of Jason ’89 and Jeremy ’91). Sandy and Bill Spitz,with an impressive family history of service to the first educational home of their three daugh-ters (Katherine ’97, Lauren ’01, and Carrie ’04), reach the quarter century mark.

The list is led by three who mark nearly three decades of giving to USN this year: Samuel Dil-lard ’56, Weaver Barksdale (Mollie Gee ’97 and Heather ’99), and John and Allis Dale Gillmor(Sarah Hymowitz ’88, Abby Luffman ’89, Susan ’91, Eleanor Schiff ’95, John ’98, and Matthew ’02).

We appreciate all these commitments, from those who know us best to those who left decadesago and have scarcely returned since graduation, such as David Miller ’68, supporting theschool from far-away Massachusetts. Thank you to all.

eabody Demonstration School was an importantpart of Scott Sudduth’s youth. He grew up on thecollege’s “faculty row,” just two doors down fromMiss McMullan. She liked to turn to young Scotty

to help entertain her nieces and nephews wheneverthey came to visit.

The Sudduths first came to Peabody College whenScott’s father was working toward his Ph.D., thenmoved to Alabama after Scott finished nursery school.When they returned to Nashville, he was in fifthgrade. He graduated from PDS in 1954.

A graduate of Princeton and Johns Hopkins, Scottpracticed obstetrics and gynecology after his resi-dency training at Boston Lying-in (now Brigham andWomen’s). For more than four decades he had a pri-vate practice “in lovely Exeter, New Hampshire” and“enjoyed all of the above immensely.”

Now, approaching the sixtieth anniversary of his PDSgraduation, he remembers the teachers there who in-spired him.

“At Peabody I was drawn toward math and science,and that was the way it was in college as well. HazelLundberg and Dr. Beauchamp were two of the teachersI remember most. They were just excellent teachers.”Dr. Beauchamp encouraged him to go into medicine,something that was in the back of Scott’s mind any-way, as his mother’s father was a physician.

Though Scott recalls histeachers as being sea-soned veterans of twentyyears or more on the fac-ulty, one young man whowas there only a short timeremains vivid in his mind.

“One person who was verygood was Gilbert Wilson,our eighth grade teacher.He was very down toearth. He let you expressyour knowledge and ex-plore multiple answers to questions. He encouragedpeople to think freely.”

Deciding to make a gift to USN to honor the schooland its great teachers was an easy part of his estateplanning. “It came about as I was setting up a revoca-ble trust, and it was to be distributed upon my death”along with other similar bequests.

“It’s an unrestricted gift, and I would hope it would gotoward furthering the excellences at the school andtoward recognizing the quality of teachers that wehave.”

Scott adds, “It’s a place that is very special, and weall benefited from our excellent education there. It’stime to give back,” he says to his fellow alumni. “Itshould be high on your list of ways to give back.”

Understanding EndowmentsHow does a strong endowment help USN? A gift for endowment demonstrates a long-term commit-ment to USN and links past, current, and future genera-tions. A strong endowment enables USN to maintain andenhance the quality of education in perpetuity.

What is the value of USN’s endowment?Our endowment is under conscientious management ofthe investment committee of USN’s Board of Trustees.At $10,887,648 as of June 30, 2013, USN’s endow-ment is relatively modest compared to that of our localand national peer schools.

How can a gift be made to USN’s endowment?Named funds can be established for gifts that meetspecific thresholds for scholarships, faculty develop-ment, programs, or facilities. Such endowments, whichmay bear your name or your family’s, reflect your in-terests and serve as an enduring testament to yourgenerosity. Gifts of cash or securities are ideal assetsthat can be designated to endowment. Testamentarygifts such as bequests, charitable trusts, life insurancepolicies and other beneficiary designations are alsoexcellent giving arrangements.

uly may not be the ideal time to visit our coun-try’s steamiest city, New Orleans, but it was agood time for high school math teacher JasonShuster to take his first trip to the Crescent City.

Thanks to the Clayton Family Endowment Fund, he at-tended the Mathematical Sciences Institute at TulaneUniversity.

Jason took twocourses, “Pro-jects in AlgebraII/Pre-Calculus”and “CalculusBefore Calcu-lus,” returningto Nashvillewith lots ofgood ideas forhis Algebra andPre-Calculusclasses. Of themany usefulprojects learnedin the first class,Jason says, “Myfavorite onewas where webuilt a wind

chime by figuring out a chord we would like, then de-termining the frequency of each note, which would inturn determine the length of each pipe.” He broughthis wind chimes back to Nashville, and this spring heplans to attempt the same project in Algebra II.

“Calculus Before Calculus” provided him with “a goodnumber” of “applications of min/max problems” thatwill be practical in both Algebra II and Pre-Calculus

Orrin H. Ingram ScholarshipIn order to broaden educational opportunities for especially deserving students from our community, University School of Nashville established The Orrin H.Ingram Scholarship Program in 2004 with an endow-ment gift from the Orrin H. Ingram Fund. The IngramScholarship is awarded to a student of great aca-demic promise, one who demonstrates intellectual cu-riosity and good character.

Malone Scholars ProgramIn 2005, the Malone Family Foundation awarded USNa $2 million gift establishing an endowment to supporta Malone Scholars Program. The Malone Scholars Program provides scholarships for top seventh throughtwelfth grade students with financial need. Twelve Malone Scholars have graduated from USN, and seven Malone Scholars were named for the 2012-2013 school year.

Our Visiting ArtistsFall SemesterJaime Raybin ’99, multi-media artist and admissionsofficer at Watkins College of Art, Design, and Film,shared information about the college art school expe-rience as well as about careers in visual art. Sheshowed images and discussed her science-inspiredwork, which is installation-based.

Scott Guion, painter, muralist, public art, from NewOrleans, who moved to Nashville seeking refuge fromHurricane Katrina. Scott brought examples of work inprogress and shared his painting technique with thestudents. His presentation showed the full range ofwhat he does in mural work, public art, and fine artpainting.

Melanie Guion, painter, mixed media artist, muralist,mosaic artist. After her presentation about her work,a viewing of the segment of Tennessee Crossroadsfeaturing her work, Melanie returned to class anddemonstrated how to make Shoe Shrines inspired byher work. Some of the students’ shoe shrines wonawards in the Scholastic Competition. They were dis-played in the Tibbott Center Gallery.

Katie Gonzales, book artist from Athens, Georgia whovisited the class on Artclectic’s Education Day, leadingthe students through the process of creating a star book.

Erin Anfison, painter, filmmaker, Fine Art professor atMTSU, showed examples of her work in encausticpainting with a presentation about her recent work.She also showed her latest animated film, discussingthe process of stop-motion animation.

Janet Lee, illustrator fromNashville, who has wonnational awards for her illustrated books, visitedclasses in middle and high school, demonstrating herdrawing processes. She lectured on the history of thegraphic novel.

Working Artists Visit USN Classes

The Mimsye and Leon May ’39 Visiting Artist Endowment has brought a remarkable array of artists in thethick of their careers to USN this year to work with our high school students in Lesley Patterson-Marx’s class.

Lesley says, “The students engage with the work on a deeper level when the person who made it is right there to talk about it and welcome their questions. When young people see artists working and making a living atwhat they do, they are less likely to discount art as a possible profession for themselves. Ideally our arts programs at USN are creating young people who will grow into a lifelong practice of appreciating, supporting, and participating in the arts.”

Sondra Zendlovitz Reading Room EndowmentEnglish teacher and reading specialist SondraZendlovitz had a particular interest in helping youngpeople understand the importance of civil rights forall. After her death, her family established the SondraZendlovitz Reading Room, the perfect home for theCivil Rights Collection housed there. Spring SemesterDale Clifford, printmaker and professor at SavannahCollege of Art and Design, showed student work thatused elements of light in their drawings. He then gavea demonstration of drawing giving the illusion of light,sharing examples of his printmaking work.

Dorren Robinson, part-time USN teacher and fiberartist, led the students through the process of creatingfelt from recycled sweaters. She instructed the stu-dents in machine-sewing their felt pieces into softsculpture and wearable items.

Emily Holt, USN teacher and mixed media artist. Thestudents saw Emily’s work on display at The Frist Cen-ter for Visual Arts, then Emily visited the class andgave a presentation.

Lauren Rolwing, internationally recognized andaward-winning Nashville illustrator, brought examplesof her work to show our students and gave a presen-tation on her work.

Melodie Provenzano, New York painter and windowdesigner, gave a presentation about her career as agallery artist and window designer in New York City.

ave you visited campus recently? If you have,you know that the USN campus is home to over1,000 remarkable students. It is a lively andflourishing place. It boasts renovations and addi-

tions to its facilities including a library, an art wing, anoff-site athletic complex and a remodeled cafeteria.These impressive facilities are as outstanding as the academic and extracurricular programs offered. Stu-dents have access to top-notch programs in in theater,dance, and athletics, to name a few. Our students aretaking the utmost advantage of these facilities and opportunities. You can find USN students earning accolades at city, state, and even national levels.

Our alumni are an impressive and well-connectedgroup, more than 3,900 strong. PDS/USN alumni,spread all over the country and the world, belong to a variety of professions. The breadth and depth ofour current students’ interests is a perfect match for thewealth of knowledge and experience our alumni offer.

Recently, we have seen more and more interaction between our students and our alumni. Every year wehonor a Distinguished Alumnus, a person selected tooffer advice to the graduating seniors at Convocationbased on his or her personal and professionalachievement. This year we also had alumni speak tostudent assemblies, serve as Second Grade Pen Pals,teach Evening Classes, and plan Reunion events.

Alumni offered their professional expertise to studentsplanning events on campus. We have alumni parentsand grandparents of current students and alumni fac-ulty and staff. This year we held an alumni book sign-ing and a Music Night featuring alumni musicians.

Every year offers expanded opportunities for alumnito interact with fellow alumni as well. The PDS/USNAlumni Association Board sponsors several events de-signed to provide opportunities for alumni to socializeand network with each other. If it isn’t possible to at-tend an event in Nashville, there are opportunities toattend events in cities accessible to large concentra-tions of alumni. This year, the Alumni and DevelopmentOffice hosted events for alumni in Chicago, Washing-ton D.C., Atlanta, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, andKnoxville. We even had an alumni event in Japan!

The Alumni Board’s mission is to connect alumni to theUSN community and to other alumni. Our alumni area diverse and interesting group that has a lot tooffer our current students and each other. The Boardlooks forward to increasing the opportunities avail-able to build these important connections in the com-ing years. We will continue to concentrate on makingthese interactions relevant and useful. The AlumniBoard is proud of our current and former students,and we are pleased to play a role in the future ofthis outstanding school.

The 40-Year Old Reunion | Liza Beazley Lentz ’73, Reunion Chair

marked the 40th reunion of myPeabody Demonstration Schoolclass of 1973. We graduated onthe steps of the Social Religiousbuilding on the Peabody College

campus, and, as I recall, it was a blazing hot day withbright sunshine and not a cloud in the sky. There wasno tent, coolers of iced bottled water or fans for thegraduates or our families. It was a far cry from myyoungest child’s graduation from University School ofNashville just five years ago on the same spot. Wefound a huge tent, ice cold water for everyone, fans,and even EMTs on hand.

In 1973, 40-year olds were ancient, and we couldnot imagine being the 57-58 year olds we aretoday. Many of our parents weren’t that old! Ourfirst reunion gathering was in 1983 at our classmateAmy Kurland’s new venture in Green Hills called The

Bluebird Café. You may have heard of it.We had a good turnout, and most of uslooked pretty much as we had back in1973. Some had gained a little weight,lost some hair, cut our long ’70s hair,were single, married, divorced, had chil-dren or were expecting children, moved

out of Nashville, or moved back toNashville.

Most, but not all, had graduated from college, somehad gone on to graduate school, and some wererunning a family business. We looked through ourold yearbooks and struggled to remember what wewere referring to in comments we wrote in eachother’s yearbooks. Forty years later Susie ScogginsLogan and I still don’t remember what momentousevent in 1971 drew us into a solid friendship thatstill remains today.

Only this year did I realize that my daughter Ellie’08 and I would celebrate our class reunions thesame year. When I asked Ellie if her class wouldparticipate in reunion festivities, she replied that notenough years had passed for her class to miss eachother. Since graduating from college, her class hasmanaged to stay well-connected through socialmedia. If they want to see each other, someoneemails, texts or puts an invitation out on Facebook tomeet at a local bar and voila, they have a reunion.

“Social media” wasn’t even a term back in 1973,but it has helped our class stay in touch with eachother and with our alma mater, PDS. The years haveflown by, and before we knew it—there we were,58 years old at the All School Reunion Party, at theReunion Luncheon, or at a party at my house sur-rounded by our high school friends who are some-how better friends and different friends now thanwe were when we graduated.

Judging from the hundreds of photos posted on the2012 PDS/USN Reunion webpage, other classeswere having almost as much fun as the class of 1973at their own reunion festivities. Every graduate ofPeabody and University School will have an oppor-tunity to join the school community for the biggestand best reunion of all when we celebrate the 100thanniversary of our school.

ast spring a dozen of the schools that received atwo million dollar scholarship endowment from theMalone Family Foundation formed the MaloneSchool Online Network, assisted by Stanford Uni-

versity. USN is one of the MSON schools committed tosharing teaching and learning with emerging video-conference technology.

Philanthropic support from USN families allowed us toconfigure the Hassenfeld Library’s Eisenstein conferenceroom with two 60 inch monitors, two cameras, and theother infrastructure that goes along with an HD con-nection. With a cost under $1,000 per student, percourse, per semester, and with each school receiving$10,000 worth of credit, no direct fees are chargedto the families of students enrolled in MSON classes

The first MSON class at USN is Justin Fitzpatrick’s“Advanced Abstract Math,” which meets twice a week for an hour via teleconferencing. Mr. Fitzpatrick

says, “Students from USN arecollaborating with studentsacross the country, solvingproblems and presenting solu-tions to their peers. Betweenclasses, students will watchvideos that introduce the mate-rial of the course and preparethem for interactive discussionsessions during the synchronousmeetings that occur twice aweek.”

Future offerings available tohighly motivated high schooljuniors and seniors may includeArabic, Advanced Program-ming, Multivariable Calculus,Meteorology, Ottoman History, and more. The options are limitless.

Fellowship: second grade teacher Melissa Shermanand kindergarten teacher Victoria Roca.

The Science of SpellingMelissa says, “I was looking for a way to make mystudents’ understanding enduring by helping them understand how words are built.” She decided to go straight to the source of the ideas she found mosthelpful: Melvyn Ramsden, a Cambridge educated linguist, orthographer, and author of the RealSpelling resources.

The Meador Fellowship allowed her to study withRamsden in Cluis, the village in France where he lives.“Most of us were taught that the English spelling system is riddled with exceptions and irregularities, but Ramsden’s work clearly shows that the Englishspelling system is consistent, orderly and pre-dictable,” Melissa says.

The Real Spelling way teaches children “morphology(the structure and sequence of meaning), etymology(the interrelation of meaning), and phonology (herepresentation of pronunciation) in that order.”Melissa explains the necessity of using precise termi-nology, just as in other sciences, and of employingsuch tools as flow charts and matrices to analyzewords.

The method works in a second grade classroom, shesays. “I have been applying these principles of rigor-ous scientific investigation of words to teach mysecond grade class, and the results are amazing.Students are not only focused on correctness but arelooking for a deeper understanding of the how andwhy of word building. They are engaged and theirknowledge of words is enduring, not forgotten after aFriday spelling test. I am still learning from Melvyn,as he is open to questions, consultation and further tutoring through online video conferencing as I continue to deepen my own understanding of the English spelling system.”

“Real Spelling shows my students that questions aremore important than answers, that the English spellingsystem is orderly and not riddled with exceptions.

The children see that if theylearn about a word’s history orstructure, spelling makes sense.”

Forest Kindergartens InspireVictoria says that her summertravel to Scotland and Swedengave her “a new lens to lookthrough when teaching.” Her“wonderful experiences workingalongside Cynthia Lee in thelower school naturalist pro-gram,” which Victoria calls“one of the best things we dowith our students,” made herwant to learn more about “forest schools.”

In these schools children and teachers spend almostall their time outdoors. Victoria visited The SecretGarden Outdoor Nursery in Fife, Scotland and TheMulleborg I Ur Och School in Stockholm, Sweden.

The Secret Garden has no building nor structure of anykind. The children and teachers spend every hour ofevery day outside in the woods and on the coastline ofFife. With her staff, Cathy Bache, who founded the

school a decade ago, chooses a location “based on weather andthe interests of her students at the time.”

Next Victoria visited the oldest forest school in Sweden, theMulleborg I Ur Och school on Lidingo Island, established in 1985.The I Ur Och (“rain or shine”) movement “focuses on incorporatingoutdoor activities such as hiking and cross country skiing into alearning program for young children.” Students spend two daysa week at the school building, taking whole day excursions to thesurrounding woods and lake the other three.

The forest schools do more than develop students’ gross motor skills “through climbing, walking and maneuvering around a naturalenvironment complete with roots, hills and rocks. The students arealways creating. Without pre-made toys, the students have totransform the outside world into whatever they want or need it to be according to their imagination.”

Victoria says, “Children 3-6 years old showed a great deal of independence with unpacking and packing up materials, solvingproblems with peers, or meeting challenges in their projects.”

Her visit to these schools left Victoria “with a continued sense ofthe importance and benefit to our students of the naturalist pro-gram. As a kindergarten team we are exploring ways to extendthe role of the naturalist program and integrate it even more intoour curriculum.”

The Helen Meador Travel Fellowship was established in 2011 by Jon Shayne ’80 and Ann Meador Shayne ’81 inmemory of Ann’s mother. Every summer it allows a USN teacher to travel outside North America and return to theclassroom inspired.

Together, we did it!

A huge, heartfelt thank you to everyone in the USNfamily who pitched in and helped us surpass our2013 Annual Fund goal with a record-breaking$1,229,329!

You might remember that, sometime in December,Steve noticed that he’d been wearing the same USNblue sweater to every single Annual Fund promotionalgathering. At first, we just chalked it up to coinci-dence, but then as the campaign contributions contin-ued to roll in, and we topped $1 million in lateJanuary, we had to believe that some “blue sweatermojo” was going on.

But, whom are we kidding? The sweater motif justmade letter writing easier and more entertaining toread. The truth is we exceeded our Annual Fund goalas a direct result of your response to more than 100volunteers writing letters, making phone calls, sendingemails and just chatting with fellow parents. Eighty-two percent of USN parents made a gift to this year’scampaign, joining the more than 1,700 trustees, fac-ulty and staff members, students, alumni, past parents,and friends who all believe in USN.

We want to especially thank the folks manning ourgrassroots effort: Leadership Committee Chairs Lauraand Brad Currie; Division Level Leaders Amy and GregShepard (Lower School), Jane and Erich Groos (MiddleSchool), Kathy and Tom Pennington (High School); and

New Parent Chair Nicole Dunigan. These parentswere at the top of their game, finding creative waysto convey the importance of the Annual Fund and persuading others to support it.

On the off-chance that school-colored, fabric-based,lucky charms really do influence success, we’vepassed on our blue sweaters to Laura and Brad Currie who have enthusiastically agreed to chair the 2013-2014 Annual Fund. We’re confident thatthis time next year they’ll be trumpeting their ownrecord-breaking numbers.

To echo what we said last fall, creating and main-taining USN’s one-of-a-kind educational wonderlandtakes professional expertise, broad volunteer effort,and strong financial support. While we’ve clearly gotmore than our fair share of these, every other decentprivate school can lay claim to the same things.

Power from the Sun | Edward E. Ford Foundation Matching Grant

tudents in the high school’s two AdvancedPlacement Environmental Science classes will be analyzing data from the solar panels at the River Campus that were installed last year

thanks to a challenge grant from the Edward E. FordFoundation. Matching this $50,000 grant with newgifts totaling $50,000 provided the funds for thesolar equipment and their installation costs.

In addition to saving USN money and benefiting theenvironment, the panels serve an educational purpose.The more than two dozen students in these AP classeswill check each month on the total kilowatt hours pro-duced by the panels and what our energy savingsare from those home-grown kWh.

Looking at last year’s electric bills, students will calculate the total energy used at the River Campusto determine how much the solar panels are helpingUSN save money. They’ll look at the data day by dayto discover the variability of solar energy collection.In May, when they have examined a year’s worth ofdata, the students hope to offer recommendations onhow to maximize the efficiency of the process.

One benefit of the solar panels has already becomeapparent to soccer fans. The scoreboards on the soc-cer and lacrosse fields at the River Campus haveswitched to solar power, silencing the gas generatorthat was running them.

Dear USN Community,

It is with great pleasure that I report to you about an-other fabulous year in the life of USNA. I was honoredto work with so many wonderful volunteers and USNfaculty and staff. The hard work and commitment ofevery volunteer, administrator, faculty and staff wereamazing. Thank you for the opportunity to serve.

USNA continued to support the school through service,community building and fundraising. Volunteers sup-ported faculty and staff in the classroom and beyondas Art Department Coordinators, LS Helping Hands Co-ordinators and Hospitality Coordinators who were re-sponsible for the 30th Grandparents’ Day, faculty/staff breakfasts in the work rooms, the “New to USN”High School Coffee and refreshments at the EighthGrade Breakfast. The Library Volunteer Coordinator,Room Parent Coordinator, and Middle School AdvisoryParent Coordinator also provided service to the school.

As for fundraising, USNA raised approximately$150,000 through nine different fundraisers, whichwere led by 21 chairs. The list shows the profits ofeach event and the funds transferred for the benefitof designated areas around the school. Thanks to theeffort of all of these volunteers, we increased ourprofits and participation in each fundraiser.

This year USNA added one fundraiser and expandedanother. The “Social before the Scramble” the nightbefore the Golf Tournament raised additional fundsfor the River Campus. Also, the Lower School PhotoProject added a Middle School Photo Project for fifthand sixth graders.

USNA continued to promote community. The Dads’ Al-liance, an active group again this year, provided theirpopular grilling at Fall Fest, which was huge this year.Parent Social Coordinators planned and hosted so-cials for each grade, allowing parents to gather andget to know one another. The Caring and Concern Co-ordinators provided support to those in our communityin need. The Faculty and Staff Appreciation Coordi-nators once again hosted wonderful luncheons to showUSNA appreciation for teachers at the beginning andend of the school year.

I’d like to mention TAP (Tiger Arts Patrons) and TigerClub. These booster clubs for performing arts andathletics each increased their memberships tremen-dously. At TAPstravaganza, a festive evening of en-tertainment, food, and a red carpet, TAP showcasedthe talent of USN students. Tiger Club helped athleticsprovide concessions at all home volleyball games,basketball games and track meets. A collateral bene-fit from the concessions organized by Tiger Club washelping service clubs to raise money. When a serviceclub staffed the concession stand, they shared theproceeds with Tiger Club.

It is with great pleasure that I pass the USNA leader-ship to Caroline Shockley. We are lucky parents tohave her continuing the efforts of this dedicatedgroup of people.
