STATEMENT OF CORE
INSTITUTIONAL VALUES
Midland University is a Christian
institution in the Lutheran tradition,
with historical ties to the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).
It holds the following core values to
be the foundation of its identity as a
community:
FAITH
Midland reflects the understanding
that faith and learning are
inexorably linked. The university is
founded upon the belief that the
exploration of faith and religion is an
essential human endeavor.
LEARNING
Midland believes that learning is
best based on open inquiry and the
liberal arts, and that an appreciation
of the empirical, theoretic and
aesthetic forms of knowledge is
critical to the development of
citizens who can respond to an
ever-changing world.
QUALITY
Midland believes in upholding
exacting standards of quality and
accountability, thereby creating a
learning experience where
excellence in all things is valued and
expected by all our constituents –
our faculty, staff, students, alumni,
trustees, and friends.
RESPECT
Midland believes in the sanctity of
the individual in a mutually
supportive community of a small
university, which thus leads to a
focus on each person as an
individual with inherent worth.
STEWARDSHIP
Midland believes it is called to
educate morally and ethically
responsible citizens of a pluralistic
global society, and as a result is
guided by the ideas of service,
integrity, and mutual respect.
STATEMENT OF FAITH, LEARNING
AND INTELLECTUAL ENGAGEMENT
For more than 130 years, Midland University has supported liberal arts traditions that encourage open inquiry and consideration of ideas critical to understanding both the human condition and human potential. Reflecting the University’s mission and core values of faith and learning, Midland is guided by a theology that pursues truth and
learning through open inquiry of
ideas and structured environments.
Beyond promoting understanding,
its core value of respect requires
that it demonstrate civility and
tolerance in discussing differences.

Opportunities for Midland's next President
Over the past five years, Midland has experienced
record-setting growth under the leadership of a very
progressive and transformative president who had
the support of a cohesive administrative team and a
very flexible and cooperative faculty. The enrollment
growth to the largest student body in university
history was supported by significant change in
academic program offerings, improved student
advising with the "4-year Graduation Guarantee," and
increased numbers of extracurricular programs, both
in athletics and the performing arts. Rather than
approaching this presidential leadership transition as
a time for stabilizing and consolidating after this
period of rapid growth and considerable change, the
Board of Directors is looking for a president who will
continue this growth mindset with entrepreneurial
focus and visionary leadership. Qualified candidates
may come from traditional academic environments,
but strong consideration will be given to non-
traditional, innovative leaders in business, education,
government, or other progressive settings.
Midland has rediscovered its potential and now
expects to build on the growing momentum. There
are opportunities for continued growth in the number
of students, growth in academic program offerings,
growth in an additional residential campus location,
and growth in the donor base and overall fundraising
outcomes for the university. There is also the need to
support the programs that are already in place, to
improve the current facilities, and to advocate for the
human resources that are needed to continue to
move forward.
In five years, Midland has come from near bankruptcy
to become the fastest growing college or university in
the region with a determined commitment to remain
on that trajectory of growth. Midland is now
operating within a balanced budget, experiencing
consecutive annual operating surpluses. However,
with a current endowment of just over $10M, the
university is dependent upon student tuition and
continued enrollment growth for its financial security.
Midland considers itself a university with a small
campus feel, but big opportunities. As a primarily
residential campus, it is a place where students can

flourish in a community of care that offers individual
support and encouragement. Administrators, faculty,
and staff are readily visible and accessible on campus.
Faculty and staff are invested in individual student
success; advising is done with a focus on progress
toward graduation. Midland is also a place of
engagement where students have an abundance of
campus activities keeping students involved on the
weekends and fully integrated into the close-knit
community where people are known by name.
