Please note if you wish to join a class with a limit on enrolments, (e.g. computer classes), an

early application gives you a better chance of acceptance.

At class always sign the attendance roll and wear your name-tag. This is very important for OH

& S and identification reasons. New members can collect their name-tag from the board on the

wall of Lecture Room 1.

Please also note you only need to enrol once per year for ongoing course – your name will be

automatically rolled over into subsequent Terms.

U3A Sunraysia plans for online Enrolment and Course Selection in 2018

At the May committee meeting a motion was passed that we adopt an online Membership

Administration System (U-MAS), to become fully operational in 2018. Members who do not

have internet access would continue to receive course lists and a course selection form, and

would continue to send us course selections, for processing by our Registration Officer.

Members with internet access will be able to log in to check and amend their personal details

and enrol in courses, and would receive an email confirming their enrolments and invoicing

them for any payments due.

The system was developed by U3A Network Victoria and is already in use by many U3As. If you

visit the websites of U3A Nunawading, U3A Mornington, or U3A Whittlesea, you will be able to

see U-MAS in operation. During terms 3 and 4 we will be readying the system, and will be

testing email addresses for errors. The system will allow us to better communicate with

members, and allow newly retired prospective members – who like researching online – to join

and enrol.

A Perfect Marriage

A man and woman had been married for more than 60 years. They had shared everything. They had talked about everything. They had kept no secrets from each other, except that the little old woman had a shoe box in the top of her closet that she had cautioned her husband never to open or ask her about. For all of these years, he had never thought about the box, but one day, the little old woman got very sick and the doctor said she would not recover.

In trying to sort out their affairs, the little old man took down the shoe box and took it to his wife's bedside.

She agreed that it was time that he should know what was in the box. When he opened it, he found two crocheted dolls and a stack of money totalling $95,000.

He asked her about the contents. "When we were to be married," she said, "my grandmother told me the secret of a happy marriage was to never argue. She told me that if I ever got angry with you, I should just keep quiet and crochet a doll."

The little old man was so moved; he had to fight back tears. Only two precious dolls were in the box. She had only been angry with him two times in all those years of living and loving. He almost burst with happiness.

"Honey," he said, "that explains the dolls, but what about all of this money? Where did it come from?"

"Oh," she said. "That's the money I made from selling the dolls."

Married Four Times

The local news station was interviewing an 80-year-old lady because she had just gotten married for

the fourth time.

The interviewer asked her questions about her life, about what it felt like to be marrying again at 80, and then about her new husband's occupation.. "He's a funeral director," she answered. "Interesting," the newsman thought... He then asked her if she wouldn't mind telling him a little about her first three husbands and what they did for a living.

She paused for a few moments, needing time to reflect on all those years. After a short time, a smile came to her face and she answered proudly, explaining that she had first married a banker when she was in her 20's, then a circus ringmaster when in her 40's, and a preacher when in her 60's, and now - in her 80's - a funeral director.

The interviewer looked at her, quite astonished, and asked why she had married four men with such diverse careers.

(Wait for it...)

She smiled and explained, "I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go."

Sound, Heat and Light. Tutor: Glenn Miller

About time we did a little bit of Physics even though the word might frighten a few people off. I have no intention of

getting too mathematical or even too scientific, but there is so much that is so incredibly interesting. What is sound?

What is heat? What is light? Yes, but are you sure? All are difficult to define. Sound is what you hear, light is what

you see and heat is what you feel – but that’s not satisfactory either. We need to consider our five senses: How the eye

works, the ear, the nose, the tongue and the fingers. Telling you all about the electro-magnetic spectrum might be fairly

unhelpful. Still, by the time we finish the lectures, you might be able to explain why heat can hurt, how fast light travels,

why the Big Bang was not audible, what echoes are, why optical illusions work, why things appear three dimensional,

what’s a fly’s vision like and lots more that is , I hope, a lot of fun.
