    concept: Environments for Discussion

Drawing rom the theme o collaboration on which this conceptwas built, I push it urther in this iteration by creating a dierentEnvironment for Discussion or each designer. Each environment, asinuenced by the nature o the eatured designers work, creates aunique space in which the work is the subject o discussion, but equally

as important is the discussion which occurs around the work.

Each designers work, shown in color and as a preview o the ullimages to ollow, is prominent and concurrently acts on and is beingacted upon by the other students in the program. Te other studentsin each situation are represented by black and white thumbnails othe respective designers work.

Lisa Willmans work explores the use o handicrats in the expressiono trauma. Te environment created by her work evokes the eelingo a roundtable discussion much like a crat circle or group therapysession. Te work provides a medium with which to probe the unique

    complexities o trauma.

Jeane Lamberts work seeks to call attention to the beautiul andthought-provoking qualities in ordinary things, as delivered throughbook design. Jeanes environment, repetitious and tedious on the outset, asks the audience to fnd the beauty in the mundane. Mimicking rowso books in a bookshel or library, Jeanes work creates a space in whichthe other students works are the out-turned books at the end o therow at once aecting and being eected by Jeanes beautiul tedium.

LisaWillmanMy work explores the use of handicrafts in the expression of trauma.Practitioners of handicrafts strive for perfection by taking control overtheir creations, whereas trauma victims often nd themselves feeling alack of control and seeking mere survival in the wake of their experience.

is intrinsic dichotomy creates a new platform from which toinvestigate both categories.

In the wake of traumatic experiences, the human mind and body areoften faced with seemingly insurmountable hurdles. ese extraordinaryphysical and psychological pressures can change the way trauma victimsperceive their periphery. To see people, events, and objects through theeyes of a trauma survivor necessitates a shift in how you process the

world around you. As a user group, trauma victims have an extremelyunique set of needs for maintaining their physical and emotional healthas they attempt to regain control over their lives.

Handicrafts come with their own set of stereotypes and associatedimagery. ey are generally ssociated with the solitary creation of nelycrafted items objects perceived as being antiquated in nature, that takea long time to produce, and that are more valuable than mass-produceditems. In undertaking a craft project, one assumes total control over the

materials and design of the piece at hand.

is work delves into the underbelly of trauma and communicates thedistinct views and experiences of victims through handicrafts. ehandicrafts are used to provide a medium with which to probe the uniquecomplexities of trauma and trauma victims. When a traumatic eventoccurs, the level of quality in a persons life often comes crashing down.My work is what takes place amongst the broken shards of perfection.

To pay attention is our endless and proper work

All of my MFA Design workimage-making studies, books, and landart installationsstem from my desire to call attention to the beautifuland thought-provoking qualities in ordinary things. rough my work,

vI strive to provide a place of discovery for others; my methods rely onplay, observation and exploration during the design process itself.

Disrupting preconceptions about objects and images has become anessential part of my process. For example, my daily practice for one yearinvolved choosing any object that caught my attention and creating animage of it using a atbed scanner or regular camera. After reecting onthe results of these images, I made another. One image of an object leadsto another, to another (pg. 19).

While books as everyday objects have served my intentions to exposethe magical in the everyday, they have also become the delivery methodfor sharing my work. e book Scan is designed to invite the viewers tomake their own discoveries about how text and image relate. With thesplit pages (text on bottom, images on top) the changeable format invites

the viewer to create a playful voice instead of a didactic tone, and to re-discover possibilities in the mundane (pg. 20 21).
