nursing education

Genomics. With Dr. Patricia Newcomb‘s leadership scholarship in genomics is growing as are the cadre

of faculty of students who have joined the monthly journal club meetings, the periodic special

writing/review sessions, and excursions into second life. Dr. Newcomb chaired the search committee for a

tenured/tenure track faculty member. The search yielded no viable applicant. Scholarship activities and

products are summarized in Table 2.

Geriatrics. Dr. Carolyn Cason chaired the search committee for a tenured/tenure track faculty member.

An offer was made and rejected as the applicant was offered a more attractive package elsewhere.

Scholarship activities and products are summarized in Table 2.

Scholarship Objective: UTA School of Nursing Strategic Plan 2008-2012

The 2008-2012 strategic plan for the UTA School of Nursing has one objective related to faculty

scholarship: Increase the number of faculty involved in scholarly activities. The objective has four

outcomes. Table 8 presents these outcomes and the degree to which each has been achieved.

In 2010-2011, the School of Nursing employed 12 tenured and 6 tenure track faculty members.

Summary

In 2010-2011 the number of research grant applications grew significantly influenced by two major

characteristics: an increase in the number of applications for small, seed projects (see especially those

CNST Annual Report 2010-2011 10

10

related to genomics) and in increase in the number of applications from interdisciplinary teams of

researchers. About a third of the applications submitted are pending review.

Scholarship activity among tenure track faculty is improved. Each tenure track faculty member is

engaged in scholarship, is either funded or actively seeking funding and is disseminating the results of

their research.

Dissemination activities, especially publications, are markedly decreased in 2010-2011. Only 26 faculty

had at least one publication. The number of faculty-student dissemination activities was also markedly

decreased. The decline in productivity and research among faculty members teaching in the PhD

Program is especially concerning.

For scholarship within the School of Nursing to grow,

1. newly appointed tenure track faculty need start-up funds for their research programs

2. composition of the faculty must change so that there are more tenured and tenure track faculty

3. teaching workloads for newly employed faculty on the tenure track must be restricted during the

first 2 years of employment

4. summer appointments to support faculty scholarship should be actively pursued

5. salaries for all faculty appointments must be market competitive

6. recruitment and appointment of new tenure track faculty needs to be focused and targeted on

either genomics or geriatrics

7. to increase success on grant applications, an internal formal review process should be continued

8. Strategies for increasing writing collaborations within the College of Nursing should be identified

and implemented
