INTRODUCTION
The Exercise Science program’s mission is to prepare undergraduate students for diverse
employment opportunities in the allied health industry. The program’s faculty strives to
create an active learning environment that encourages students to be engaged, intuitive,
respected fitness professionals. The program’s teaching philosophy incorporates theory,
practice, and technology with an emphasis on participation in professional development
activities. These experiences will distinguish our students from more traditionally
educated job seekers and improve their opportunities for leadership roles. Students will
graduate with the understanding of the importance of demonstrating an active lifestyle.
The practicum is one of the required experiential learning experiences designed to allow
students to gain actual experiences in the Exercise Science field under the direct
supervision of a fitness, wellness, hospital, and/or rehab professional. This experience is
essential to the student’s preparation and education for entry into Exercise Science. The
practicum offers Exercise Science majors the opportunity to take important steps toward
future success. The practicum experience provides numerous benefits:
Interns can develop new skills and apply classroom learning in a real world
environment.
Allow students to gain valuable experience while being evaluated as a source of
future employment.
Interns have the opportunity to network with industry professionals which can be
a deciding factor in securing employment.
Offers businesses an opportunity to recruit future employees who have proven
themselves as interns.
Can be an impressive listing on a student’s resume and can be a deciding factor in
securing employment.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The practicum requirement for the University of Southern Indiana Exercise Science
program is EXSC 496 – Practicum in Exercise Science. The prerequisite for this course is
KIN 283 or SPTM 283 and senior standing.
The practicum requirement is considered to be one of the most critical components of the
Exercise Science Program.
The EXSC 496 practicum occurs during a student’s senior year and exposes them to a
practical learning environment through which they apply classroom theory to reality. The
practicum may be part-time or full-time but requires students to complete a minimum of
150-300 hours depending on the practicum.
EXSC 496 – 3-credit hours = 150 hours; 4-credit hours = 200 hours; 5-credit
hours = 250 hours; 6-credit hours = 300 hours
4
The benefits of working part-time or full-time are that interns are more likely to be seen
as a part of the “team,” get a more in-depth experience and be given greater
responsibility.
The exercise science experience will be offered in a wide range of fitness, wellness,
hospital, and rehab facilities, including rehabilitative centers (PT/OT), strength &
conditioning, cardiac rehab, commercial fitness centers, corporate fitness centers, and
many others. Students may obtain practicums in any region of the country and in some
cases may receive financial compensation.
The Practicum is expected to enhance the student’s academic experiences and include
academic requirements and a variety of assignments that document the experience and
provide opportunities for reflection via a required weekly logs and reports, student
personal evaluation paper, presentation, midterm/final student and employer evaluations,
and portfolio.
Students are highly encouraged to adopt the following text:
Bower, G. G. (2014). A guide to field experiences and careers in sport and physical
activity. Deer Park, NY: Linus Publications.
Student may already have the text from their prior field experience course
completed their freshmen year (KIN 283 or SPTM 283).
PRACTICUM PROCESS
A practicum is required within the major at USI and students should complete the
experience during their Sophomore or Senior year (depends on the major program).
The process is as follows:
1 Meet with Advisor - Students meet with faculty advisor to determine eligibility,
discuss areas of interest and the timing of the practicum.
2. Meet with Faculty Internship Coordinator - Each student is required to obtain
a practicum at an approved site. The student will meet with Faculty Internship
Coordinator to determine acceptable agencies or institutions with which the
practicum may be established. Approval to proceed with contacting specific
agencies will be completed during this meeting.
Students should research practicum opportunities at least 3-6 months prior to the
beginning of their practicum. Procrastination by the student could result in failure
to secure a Practicum at a preferred site during the desired semester.
3. Orientation - Students must attend a mandatory orientation prior to beginning
their practicum. No intern will be permitted to begin their practicum until the
5
completion of the orientation. The orientation will be scheduled following pre-
registration during the Fall and Spring semesters before the Practicum begins so
the application process is not delayed. If a student cannot make the orientation
another time will be set-up for the student to meet with the Faculty Practicum
Coordinator.
4. Develop Preliminary Materials - Prior to applying for a practicum, students
must develop a well-written and current resume, cover letter, and reference page.
Students should update the resume, cover letter, and reference page that were
developed for their previous experiences (KIN 283 or SPTM 283). When
applying for a practicum, students will normally submit resume, cover letter, and
reference page directly to potential employers and follow their directions in
handling the next steps.
5. Submit Paperwork - Once the practicum is secured the student should submit the
resume, cover letter, reference page, completed application, work agreement and
learning goals worksheet to the Faculty Internship Coordinator PRIOR to
beginning the practicum. The paperwork must be submitted by the first week of
each semester session.
6. Complete Castle Branch Corpo Profile. Hospital and/or rehab settings may
require a student to complete a certified background check through the Castle
Branch Corpo (the parent company of CertifiedBackground) Profile. The profile
provides a background check and manages medical requirements a hospital and/or
rehab setting may require. The information on the Castle Branch Corp. (the parent
company of CertifiedBackground) may be found in the appendices of this
handbook. Those medical requirements may include the following verification:
Measles, Mumps, & Rubella (MMR)
Varicella (Chicken Pox)
Hepatitis B
TB Skin Test
Tetanus, Diphtheria & Pertussis (Tdap)
CPR Certification
Influenza
Physical Examination
Medical History
HIPAA History
OSHA Results
Confidentially Statement
Workforce Member Review of HIPAA Policies
Social Media Policy Agreement
Drug Test Results
6
Students are responsible for verifying the requirements of their facility by
speaking to the supervisor upfront. The profile may take up to 6-monthes to
complete so the student must not wait to complete the profile.
The student is responsible for all expenses associated with the completion of the
Castle Branch Corp. (the parent company of CertifiedBackground) Profile.
Failure to complete the profile may mean the hospital and/or rehab setting may
withdraw their practicum opportunity.
7. Submit Assignments - Students will be required to submit timesheets and
reports, student and employer midterm/final evaluations, presentation, student
personal evaluation paper, and portfolio. Assignments are described in greater
detail within this handbook.
8. Maintain Communication - The Faculty Internship Coordinator and student will
maintain communication throughout the practicum.

of the facility, and the Faculty Internship Coordinator meeting with the site supervisor to
discuss the interns’ performance and the Practicum Program as a whole.
Presentations
Students will present on the last day of class. All students are required to develop a
maximum of 12 Powerpoint slides. One copy should be submitted to the Faculty
Internship Coordinator. BUSINESS ATTIRE IS A REQUIRMENT for the
presentation. Failure to turn in all the materials or dress in business attire for the
presentations results in a deduction of points from the presentation score. The
information to be included in the presentation will include the practicum site location
information, description of practicum experience, the impact of the experiences, and the
evaluation. Students must use the Presentation Outline located on in this handbook and
posted on Blackboard to develop the presentation.
