Research Excellence

HKUST's research breakthroughs and pursuit of academic excellence have played an essential role in building the University's global reputation since its establishment in 1991.

It is one of our core objectives to be a leading research institution, working to expand knowledge in both fundamental and applied areas and estab lishing partnerships with business and industry to promote technological advances and social and economic development in Hong Kong. Our comprehensive research infrastructure reflects this.

A number of facilities were firsts for Hong Kong and beyond, including the Nanoelectronics Fabrication Facility, CLP Power Wind/ Wave Tunnel Facility for wind/ wave and pollution dispersion studies, and Geotechnical Centrifuge Facility, which simulates earthquake motions with a bi-axial shaking table.

Research Funding

The University files numerous patent applications each year, licenses the transfer of intellectual property, and incubates start-up companies founded with HKUST expertise and technology developed at the University.

For the past 20 years, we have achieved the top success rate in Hong Kong's internationally peer-reviewed Research Grants Council's General Research Fund (formerly known as the Competitive Earmarked Research Grants program).

The excellence of fundamental research at HKUST is reflected by the competitive research funding secured from various sources, including both government and industry.
