2019 UM Scholars at UM SOM
What is the UM Scholars Summer Program?• Collaborative Scholarship Program supported by : MPower Maryland, UMCP and UMB (UM SOM)
• Broad Goal: Foster collaboration and interaction between UMCP and UMB
• Eligible Students: STEM Track UMCP Undergraduates
• UMCP to UM SOM Scholars: 16 STEM undergraduate students
• Intense 10 week Summer research experience on UM SOM campus mentored by UM SOM faculty (and UMCP faculty at UMCP)
• Program Goals: Inspire and Excite Students:
• Exposure to medicine and biomedical research and careers
• encourage matriculation in health professions and biomedical research programs
• $4,500* Stipend to do clinical or basic or translational or epidemiological research at UM SOM
Fast Facts on UM SOM Scholars• 16 students/Summer
• Top 10-14% acceptance rate after competitive review
• 102 alumni at end of 2020 program
• >50% lifetime ascension rate to medical tracks. 2% DDS, 15% to PhD Tracks and STEM Careers.– Overall: 75.5% to grad or terminal deg., 86.8% to Grad deg., STEM, Healthcare careers
• 9 at UM SOM Currently years 1-4. 1 at UMB PhD– Others at Baylor, UVA, Johns Hopkins, U Michigan, Cambridge U, UK, UMCP, etc.
• Alums: 1 Marshall Scholar, 2 Fulbrights, PhD Tracks @ MIT, UPenn, others
• Studies at top schools in US and abroad
• Contribute to articles and conference presentations

• Goal of Summer Research Programs– To expose students to-, and to excite and inspire them about topics and paths
in biomedical research and in healthcare
• Role of the Students – participate actively in all the events and activities.
– fully engage in their respective programs, eager and ready to learn
– Professionalism in all interactions
– mentor, teach, support, inspire and set a good example for other students whenever possible
