SWRK 3152 Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition (PLAR)

The Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE) Standards for Accreditation (May 2012) indicates that “…where academic credit is given for previous work and/or relevant experience in lieu of the practicum, the academic unit has written policy that specifies clear criteria and procedures used to assess skills and knowledge…” (SB 3.2.2., page 13). This may be provided for a maximum of one half of the required hours of practicum specified in the program. The documents that follow provide detailed information regarding the application process in addition to course expectations and requirements for SWRK 3152 PLAR.

(PLAR) is a process of recognizing the prior learning of skills and knowledge in social work practice. It can be through formal and informal study in a variety of settings as well as through a diversity of experiences. PLAR provides a mechanism for identifying, documenting and evaluating learning, thereby acknowledging and giving credit to students who demonstrate learning equivalent to a student completing a final field (SWRK 3150)

Applicants require a minimum of 3500 hours (within the last five years) of social work experience. 500 hours may include unpaid or volunteer work. Significant social work experience may include (but is not limited to):

Counselling With individuals, families and or groups, family mediation

Community/Development/ Social Action Involvement with non-profit organizations at community level Grassroots mobilization/local development

Advocacy Advocating with clients, families and communities

Case Management Engagement with clients, initial, ongoing assessment, intervention, Case planning and referral

Role of the PLAR Assessor

The PLAR Assessor will clarify expectations regarding the PLAR assignments, assess the written work and submit a final grade of “pass” or “fail”.
