II. TEACHING ACTIVITIES:

1. Teaching Activities Opening Statement:

Whether teaching at the medical student or resident level, I feel the focal point of any educator should be the learner rather than the subject material. As such, a comprehensive understanding of our learners is of critical importance. To best describe my philosophy of teaching, therefore, I feel it most appropriate to place it within the context of an example that helped give it form. The dichotomy between so called millennial learners and the generations prior has deservedly received tremendous attention in contemporary educational circles, and I feel one striking example of this dichotomy is represented by the simple acquisition of learning materials. In prior generations, students bore the responsibility to "hunt and gather" learning materials from physical sources housed within books and libraries; it is my position that the mental and physical investment in acquiring the tools of learning engendered an intrinsic worth in said material, and thereby engaged the learner's active learning mentality. For the current generation of learners, the acquisition of learning materials is nearly entirely passive; all source materials are available electronically, pre-recorded learning sessions may be accessed at the convenience and location of the learner's choosing (and ingested at accelerated rates to save time), and the latest journal articles can be set up to arrive silently in an email inbox to be perused or deleted with equal ease. There is neither need nor incentive to hunt and gather precious source knowledge, debasing its worth as the priceless commodity it is. In the context of this example (amongst many others), I feel this requires us as educators to engage and appeal to a learner's intrinsic intellectual drive to learn. In essence, we must develop teaching strategies that transform learners -- who may not naturally posses the spirit of intellectual curiosity so important to a physician -- into ambitious, voracious students who actively seize opportunities to learn and acquire knowledge for its own right. If we can truly inspire the formation of this mentality in our learners, command and mastery of the subject material will follow with little friction. Interestingly, I feel the principles of KUMC;s new ACE Curriculum are neatly aligned with my own philosophy, which therefore strengthens my position as an educator in this institution. In summary, my philosophy of teaching is that by understanding and engaging the motivation of our learners at all levels to passionately desire learning, our ability to teach the highest quality subject matter will become unfalteringly successful and efficient. This and the harnessed synergy of the School of Medicine's ACE Curriculum, will energize my efforts to create superlative graduates of the utmost quality.

III. SERVICE ACTIVITIES:

1. Clinical Service (Patient Care)

Upon completion of my residency in General Surgery at KU Medical Center, I completed a two-year fellowship in Complex Surgical Oncology at the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. This specialty training provided a broad knowledge of the surgical management of a myriad of cancer diagnoses, and also included in-depth training in the realm of Surgical Endocrinology. At present, Endocrine Surgery (that of the thyroid, parathyroids, and adrenal glands) comprises the bulk of my surgical practice by volume, and includes both malignant and benign diseases equally. The second largest component of my practice is focused upon the surgical management of gastrointestinal malignancies - particularly the stomach, and small intestine. The final component of my clinical practice focuses upon intra-abdominal sarcomas, namely diagnoses such as liposarcoma, leiomyosarcoma and the often similarly categorized gastrointestinal stromal tumors. IV. RESEARCH AND SCHOLARLY ACTIVITIES:

1. Research and Scholarly Activities Opening Statement:

My research activities have expectedly mirrored my clinical activities, with contributions ranging from retrospective analyses to reference book chapters. My publication regarding resection versus transplantation in the treatment of hepatocellular cancer has heretofore been the most cited of my works. Whereas prior scholarly projects were mainly clinical in nature, my efforts now are more evenly divided between clinical, basic science, and educational research in equal measure. Additionally, I have become strongly involved in the development of education based research topics as a by product of my position of Clerkship Director of Surgery with the School of Medicine. I am actively involved in research activities both as a Principal Investigator and as a Co-Investigator enrolling patients in studies as well as analyzing and interpreting data.
