Introduction
The MSc qualifications are open to holders of aNEBOSH Diploma or a BSc and will be deliveredthrough distance learning and are ideal for thoseHealth, Safety and Environment professionalswishing to gain a taught Masters level qualificationthat complements their career, through researchdirectly relevant to their own work.
Institute for Chemistry in Industry
The Institute was established by the University ofHull in 1992. It offers a comprehensive supportservice to industry through the provision of part-time courses, distance learning courses,consultancy, project development and analyticalservices.
NEBOSH
The National Examination Board in OccupationalSafety and Health (NEBOSH) was formed in 1979and is an independent examining board andawarding body with charitable status. NEBOSHoffers a comprehensive range of globally-recognised, vocationally-related qualificationsdesigned to meet the health, safety, environmentaland risk management needs of all places of work inboth the private and public sectors.
Course Structure
The qualifications consist of an online distance-learning part-time course comprising three modulesrelated to research methodology and literaturesearches followed by a series of taught core andoptional modules relating to health, safety and/orenvironmental management. The last modulecomprises a research dissertation which iscompleted at the students place of work. Thecourse duration is 2 years.
The taught modules are taken over the first yearand the first semester of the second year. Theseare undertaken using the Universitys e-learningenvironment and students also supplement theirlearning with their own background reading. Oncethese are completed the last six months of thecourse consists of the research dissertationundertaken in the students workplace. The topic ofthe research dissertation is chosen by the student,with the approval of the supervisory team, and willrelate to the title of the qualification beingundertaken.
Students are expected to study independentlythroughout the course with guidance from asupervisory team. The team will compriseacademics and health, safety and environmentalmanagement professionals allocated to eachstudent. There will be at least one face-to-facemeeting at the students workplace and theremaining supervision conducted remotely viaSkype, telephone or email.

Course ModulesAll three strands of the MSc would start with modules relating to techniques for undertaking research:
Research Methods (20 credits) - Assessed by two 3000 word essays Literature Review (20 credits) - Assessed by one 2000 word assignment & one 4000 word literature
review Designing Research Projects (20 credits) - Assessed by one 6000 word research portfolio
Each MSc course would then comprise 2 core and 1 optional taught modules on subject relevant to theparticular course.

MSc Occupational Health and Safety Management Advanced Health and Safety Risk Management (20 credits)
Assessed by one 2000 word essay & one 4000 word workplace-based assignment Corporate Social Responsibility in Health and Safety Management (20 credits)
Assessed by one 2500 word essay & one 3500 case-study assignment
MSc Environmental Management Environmental Sustainability and Social Responsibility (20 credits)
Assessed by one 3500 word essay & one 2500 case-study assignment Ecological Services and Environmental Economics (20 credits)
Assessed by one 2000 word essay & one 4000 word workplace-based assignment
The optional modules are common to all three strands and topics include Disaster and Emergency Management (20 credits) REACH Management (20 credits) Safety Case Production and Assessment (20 credits) Flood Risk Management (20 credits) Mental Health at Work (20 credits)
All options assessed with one 3000 word essay & one 3000 case-study or workplace-basedassignment
Each MSc course concludes with:
MSc Research Dissertation (60 credits)Assessed by one 12000 word dissertation, one online presentation and one online vivavoce assessment
Entry Requirements
NEBOSH National or International Diploma inOccupational Health and Safety, or
NEBOSH National Diploma in EnvironmentalManagement, or
Honours degree in health and safety management,environmental management or related subject
